At the invitation of The Queen, His Excellency Jacob Zuma, President of the Republic of South Africa, will pay a State Visit to the United Kingdom from Wednesday, 3rd March to Friday, 5th March 2010. The President will stay at Buckingham Palace, with his wife, Mrs Thobeka Madiba Zuma.

The Queen, as Princess Elizabeth, toured South Africa with The King and Queen from February to May 1947. It was her first official overseas visit. The tour included Southern Rhodesia and Bechuanaland. The Princess celebrated her 21st Birthday during the tour and broadcast to the Commonwealth.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh paid a State Visit to South Africa from 19th to 25th March 1995, as the guests of President Nelson Mandela.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh paid a State Visit to South Africa from 9th to 15th November 1999, as the guests of President Thabo Mbeki. This visit included the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Durban.

President Mandela paid a State Visit to the United Kingdom from 9th to 12th July 1996.

President and Mrs Mbeki paid a State Visit to the United Kingdom from 12th to 15th June 2001.

During his 90th birthday visit to London, Mr Nelson Mandela, OM and Mrs. Graca Machel were received by The Queen in Buckingham Palace, on 25th June 2008.

Only two days long? Is that normal?
 
For 'State Visits' two or three days is fairly normal.
For extended tours of the country no - they would be there for longer.

The format of State visits to the UK is fairly standard, and usually extends to 2.5 days. It includes, amongst other things, a ceremonial welcome at BP, the state dinner, a visit to No 10, tea at Clarence House, reception at the Guildhall, and a send off from BP.

According to the British monarchy website, it was the the Viscount Brookeborough, Lord-in-Waiting, who welcomed the presidential couple on behalf of the Queen.

I have been wondering about Return Banquets. Usually the visiting country holds a banquet as well the next day correct? Can someone elaborate some more?

Princess Michael was there but it's rare to get good pics of those attending banquets which is always frustrating IMO. The Court Circular says Prince Edward attended alone which was a pity as we might have got a pic of Sophie in her regalia as a GCVO.

Just as well the Queen is use to all types not very good press here and the fellow looked like a laughing stock to me I guess politically it had to be done. The no.3 was a bit too done up with her size plainer is best he policy oh well the Queen is just amazing the situation is not a happy one but as ever she was perfection.IMO

Agree - I'm sure she was very gracious and professional as always. I adore seeing all of this pomp and ceremony. No one does it like the British.
