Duke’s workload puts young royals to shame:

"Not only does the Duke of Edinburgh show no sign of retiring, he is even outdoing the younger generation.

New figures show that he undertook more official engagements in the UK in 2015 than the younger generation of royals put together. The duke, who turns 95 next June, carried out 217 engagements at home, while the Queen carried out 306. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry had 198 engagements between them."

Due to the reported visits to the flood areas of Scotland on the 31st December I won't be able to do an end of year update until next week as the online CC won't update until next Wednesday at the earliest for me down under. As Charles' impromptu visits last week ended up in the CC I would assume that the ones on New Year's Eve by the royals will be in there as well but that means next week for me.

The British Monarch website hasn't updated since the 20th December although Cepe has given me the information to the 22nd December.

I hope they will update soon or I will be unable to complete this year at all.

An additional note - I don't have access to The Times and so don't have access to Mr O'Donovan's figures so if someone has those figures I would appreciate them either being posted here or sent via a PM.

Iluvbertie's numbers are even higher, and of course he puts the young royals to shame, because they are not full time working royals.

Especially since he conducts duties that the younger royals can't do at the moment. He's a consort, that's a major difference.

The event on 22nd December is the last event for 2015. The trip by Charles and Camilla is not in the CC for the 31st.

This is a link (I hope) to the image of Tim O Donovans data

Happy new year. Princess Anne is declared busiest UK royal, pipping Charles for the first time in eight years in a Times reader's study.

Richard Palmer ‏@RoyalReporter 6h6 hours ago
Tim O'Donovan's study says Anne undertook 544 engagements in 2015 (528 in 2014); Charles 527 (533 in 2014).

Richard Palmer ‏@RoyalReporter 6h6 hours ago
The Queen and Philip both reduced their number of official duties in 2015, down to 341 and 250 from 393 and 273 in 2014 respectively.

Richard Palmer ‏@RoyalReporter 6h6 hours ago
Camilla increased her engagements from 224 to 235; William down from 143 to 122; Harry up from 94 to 108.

Richard Palmer ‏@RoyalReporter 5h5 hours ago
The Duchess of Cambridge, who gave birth to Princess Charlotte in May, cut her official duties from 91 in 2014 to 62 in 2015.

You can definitely see with WKH how oversea tours have a massive effect on their numbers with Kate no tours. William only one and Harry with 2 plus the quick trip to Turkey for the Gallipoli 100th.

I think the papers ignore the fact that WKH are only part-time royals so that they can have them appear as "lazy" and making "poor Phillip & the Queen" work in their old age. We all know that those two are not ready to slow down yet & we love them for it (though I would like them to slow down, they deserve some rest).

I also get the feeling that the reason WKH are not fulltime and dont have a lot of charities to their names is because someone needs to take over from the Queen & Phillip when they start slowing down. As we have seen, Phillip as been very slowly handing over some of those reponsibilities to the younger ones. So WKH numbers will slowly go up as those of HM & Phillips go down. Of the Queens grandchildren, it seems like WKH(+spouse) will be the only ones who will end up as fulltime royals, a lot of Phillip's, HM & Charles current duties will be passed on to them.

William appears to be taking on a greater role in presiding over investitures and handing out honors. Kate has recently been appointed with her first honorary military position. Harry has left the military and will likely be taking on more royal engagements as well.
Yes and I agree that the media purposely ignores the fact that this trio is considered "part-time."

Things will probably change up a bit this year. The media knows one of the main reasons why Princess Anne's, Charles, Sophie, Andrew, and Edwards numbers are so high is because they have more official roles than the younger royals. Although, that's not the facts that want to write about. The older royals engagement numbers increased with the number of responsibilities they took on from The Queen, Philip, Queen Mother and Princess Margaret.

William, Catherine and Harry are now preparing to take on more responsibility. With William now conducting Investitures, he and Catherine now attending State events, and with Harry out of the army, they are taking on more than before. Also, more roles will be passed down to them.

Weekly update to 24th December, 2015

Only 8 engagements this week and most of those were Charles’ visit to the flooded areas.

These figures are the final for the year as there were no engagements in the last week, despite Charles and Camilla making a visit to flooded areas again but that second visit wasn’t official according to Her Majesty.

I will be doing a full post of the 'types of engagements' by each royal later today along with the direct comparison with Mr O'Donovan's figures but these next few posts are just the 'normal' updates I try to do each week.

HM The Queen – 394 (394 – no change – 10.0%)
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh – 259 (259 – no change – 6.6%)
HRH The Prince of Wales – 537 (530 – up 7 – 13.7%)

My Figures Compared to Mr O’Donovan’s

My figures are in blue. Mr O’Donovan’s are in green. The difference is in red if I am down and purple if I am up.

HM The Queen – 394341 – 53

HRH The Duke of Edinburgh –
259250 – 9
HRH The Prince of Wales – 537– 527 – 10

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall –
249235 – 14
HRH The Duke of Cambridge –
130 – 122 – 8
HRH The Duchess of Cambridge – 60 – 62 - 2

HRH Prince Henry of Wales –
110 – 108 – 2
HRH The Duke of York –
292 – 275 - 17

HRH Princess Beatrice of York –
3 – 0 – 3
HRH Princess Eugenie of York – 3 – 0 – 3
HRH The Earl of Wessex – 346 – 354 – 8

HRH The Countess of Wessex –
230 – 218 – 12

HRH The Princess Royal –
554 – 544 – 10
Vice-Admiral Tim Laurence –
56 – 0 – 56
HRH The Duke of Gloucester –
274 – 270 – 4

HRH The Duchess of Gloucester –
131 – 145 – 14

HRH The Duke of Kent –
198 – 202 – 4

HRH The Duchess of Kent –
1 – 0 – 1
HRH Prince Michael of Kent – 10 – 0 – 10
HRH Princess Michael of Kent – 9 – 0 – 9
HRH Princess Alexandra – 87 – 88 – 1

Mr O’Donovan has the total at 3741 while I have 3933 however he doesn’t count Beatrice, Eugenie, Tim, Michael or Marie-Christine. I suspect he also didn’t count Katherine (HRH The Duchess of Kent) who only did one engagement. If I take out the total of these people that I count and he doesn’t I have 3851 which is 110 more than Mr O’Donovan.

I would love to have a discussion with him to see what I count that he doesn’t. I think with HM that what I do is count a day such as ‘an audience with xxxx’ and then ‘an audience with yyyy’ as two engagements while I suspect he counts all such days as one engagement. There are days when HM undertakes 4 or 5 individual audiences and sometimes even a group audience, particularly when meeting new ambassadors or high commissioners. Some countries get an individual audience while others are greeted in a group.

It should be noted that I didn't count anything for Charlotte's christening and I have seen a suggestion that one of Kate's 'engagements' was giving birth - which again I didn't count. Whether Mr O'Donovan did I, of course, don't know.

Analysis of Types of Engagements – Part A

I must emphasise that this list will not match with the total number of engagements as there are times when a royal will do something like ‘visit, viewed, met people, toured’ all at one place so that is one engagement for the total count but each is recorded in types of engagements as a separate entry.

I have removed any ‘type of engagement’ that didn’t have any entries for 2015. All of these were entries in 2014 but some had nothing in 2015 while there were other new events in 2015 that I may consider adding to the list in 2016.

This will take a number of entries to complete.

A small note about the two Edwards - Edward (W) is the Earl of Wessex while Edward (K) is the Duke of Kent. Annoying to have two with the same name but we are all able to tell the difference I am sure.

Analysis of Types of Engagements – Part C

A note about the ‘Rugby’ entries. These include the reception that The Queen gave at BP for the various teams during the World Cup and not just attendance at games. There were games that some royals attended that weren’t official engagements as well.

The Tennis numbers do not include people like William and Kate, who attended the same day that I did, because they were there for a private visit and not an official engagement as well although Camilla’s attendance the week before was listed as an official engagement.
