No, only men. Anne becomes it in her militäry funktion. Sorry my bad english:flowers:

After looking at the picture, I wondered if the royals always arrive and depart an event in the order of the succession? It sort of seems like an insult that they can't just arrive as a family instead of as a number or position in the succession. (To this Yank anyway):)

The royals as a family and on official functions are completely different people, so to say.
When royals are on official functions, precedence is important. The Queen is first among men and women alike, whereas the Duke of Edinburgh holds the highest precedence among the men. Beatrice, as a royal Princess and granddaughter of the Sovereign, is next in precedence among those present today.
As such, the Queen went first, followed by the Duke of Edinburgh (three steps behind the Queen), followed by Princess Beatrice (three steps behind Prince Philip).

Im going to switch to another member;I wonder what kind of relationship Kate has with Elizabeth II.I wonder if she calls her Majesty,M'am or Grandma!

By the way,did Diana ever call her mother in law "Mum" or anything related to that?

I wonder that also. In private, do they call the Queen "grandma" or "Majesty"? In private, do they have to curtsey, or is that just in public? Does Phillip have to bow? If they curtsey/bow in private, is it just the first time they meet during the day or do they have to each time they encounter her? After watching the series The Tudors (which I know is not totally historically accurate) the protocol of royal behavior intrigues me.

I think they do bow/curtsey even in private but I'm sure I read somewhere that it's only on the first greeting.
Technically, as Philip is only a Prince, he would bow to the Queen - whether it happens in practice though I have no idea.

Based on the letter/s Philip sent Diana that were made public at the inquest I would assume that she called the Queen 'Mum' or some other form of that name as he referred to himself as 'Papa' which is what his own children call him.

Precedence is automatic to these people - even in private the Queen leads the way simply because she is The Queen.

Philip is second in precedence to The Queen, except officially in parliament when Charles takes precedence (I don't know when that would happen but it is the way the precedence order was made in 1952 and the same one that Queen Victoria made about Albert). The Queen issued a Royal Warrant to cover that in 1952 - The Current Royal Family > HRH The Duke of Edinburgh > Honours 'place, pre-eminence and precedence' next to herself 'on all occasions and in all meetings, except where otherwise provided by Act of Parliament'.

I have also read of Princess Margaret meeting Diana in the halls at KP and Margaret curtseyed to Diana - read mind you not seen a video.

We also have Zara's comment when receiving her MBE and the instructions that were given to all the recipients about how to curtsey or bow and she said something along the lines of not needing that instruction as she has done it all her life.

I do believe that they do bow or curtsey first time of seeing during the day or first time of seeing them publicly even if they have already seen them privately e.g. if they gather at BP for some engagement they would curtsey/bow on seeing the Queen before leaving the palace but then at the venue, like everyone else, they would curtsey/bow as she entered. So at last year's wedding for instance if Anne had seen her mother before leaving for the Abbey she would have curtseyed but then again as her mother arrived at her seat but probably not again that day - unless there was another formal announcement of the Queen's arrival at the first reception.

I noticed something while looking at the old Christmas cards. I really hate to bring it up because really I don't think is the case. But did any notice that once Charles married Camilla, his children were no longer a part of his Christmas card? One could argue that once he married his precious Camilla his kids were no longer a priority.

NOW I am going to go on the record to say, that I don't believe that is the case. I believe William and Harry are just as important to Charles (and vice versa) on the day he married he married Camilla as the day they were born.

Just something to think about.

I can only surmise that the public would have had fits seeing Camilla in "Diana's place" on the Xmas cards. Jmo

Hardly. William and Harry were included in Charles and Camilla's first Christmas Card - and I don't remember any fits.
William and Harry are now grown up people; William has his own family, and Harry probably soon will have - it's only natural for them to have separate Christmas cards.

Prince Charles and Camilla's first Christmas card was the picture from their wedding, with all four children in the family - William, Harry, Tom and Laura - present.

I think it was more that the boys had become a bit old to be on their father's card. Nothing more sinister in it than that.

That's a great picture, they all look honesty happy. Thanks Artemisia. I stand corrected. :smiles

Tried to find the proper place for this question and I decided this was the best. Charles and Anne both rode horses, Charles for polo & hunting and Anne in the show ring. I don't think I've ever seen anything about Andrew or Edward riding. I have read that Sophie rides. Is this a family activity that the siblings share?

:previous:Edward rides horses. After Louise's accident where she fell off her pony, there was a mention that Edward still keeps a riding hat that was split in two when he was thrown off a horse. It happened when he was 18, I think.

Andrew does not seem as into horses as the rest, but in that family, I'm sure he knows how to ride.

I also think that the Prince of Wales seems to hjave a good relationship with his sons- the growing 'distance' between them is just the fact that they are grown up now, not children who want to hold their parents hand all the time, plus both are away a lot, milatary, taking a few royal engagements overseas and now William is married it is natual they would spend less time with their father. As for Camilla,I'm not sure. I dont' think they adore her quite as much as they say they do, however maybe that is just how I would feel about her if I was in that situation. Perhaps it is unfair of me to assume they would feel like I do? Plus I don't know Camilla, and Im not one of those people who defend Diana at all costs, but I think I would struggle a bit in that situation.
I think Charles seems quite close to Margarets children, although there is an age gap there, I read about a letter the Queen wrote to her midwife that Charles was excited about the birth of Andew because he loved little children, so maybe he sort of doted on them when they were little. There are his only cousins, so its nice he wants a good relationship with them. Also I have noticed in families there is usually a few who are best at keep[ing the relationship better, where opthers dont bother and see each other only at weddings and funerals. Maybe Charles has that role is his family? I have that role in my family over my sister, and it's just a matter of personality.I know Lady Sarah is Prince Harrys godmother, but I don't know about her brother.
I have also noticed recently that Prince Harry and the Countess of Wessex really seem to enjoy each others company a lot. They sat next to each other at the Jubilee concert and I noticed them talk and laugh a lot.I found these photos of them together I think they share the same sense of humor.

Not quite correct - they are only 2 of his 23 first cousins of whom only 11 or so are still living with some dead before he was born. People often forget that Philip had 4 sisters all of whom had children and those children are as much Charles' first cousins as are the children of his mother's sister.

Even when everyone was going on about Margaret and the Queen Mum's deaths in 2002 they usually forget that Philip also lost his last remaining sister about that same time - about 6 weeks before Margaret died.

The first cousins he would be closest to in age would be his Aunt Sophie's three youngest children - the ones she had by her second husband -born in 1947, 1949 and 1954

Let's stay on topic.

You are so right! i don't know why I forgot, I had been reading somethng only earlier in the day about Philips family and I was thinking what pretty names all the women in his family had! It is easy to forget Philip is not as only child. But I guess the Armstrong-Jones cousins are the only ones in England?
I had never heard before about his sisters death being right before the horrible ordeal the Queen had to go through with her mother and sister-

No the Armstrong-Jones cousins aren't the only ones in the UK. Charles's first cousin Princess Margarita of Baden lives in the UK permanently. She's also close to her Windsor relatives being the only member of Philip's side of the family who regularly attends the private Christmas lunch for family members. She is however more of the Queen's generation than Charles's as she was born in the 1930s. During his school years Charles was close to his cousin Welf, Philip's sister Sophie's son. Welf was born in 1947, Charles in '48 but Welf went to Gordonstoun with Charles so that he would have someone he knew at school. Later Welf went and lived in India and Charles visited him during an official visit, Welf died young. During the late '60 Charles would go skiing with his European based cousins, but there was quite an age gap.

Sophie died 3rd November 2001, Margaret 9th February 2002, and The Queen Mother 30th March 2002 so within less than 5 months they both lost their last sibling and mother/mother-in-law.

I wonder if William and Harry have any relationship with their "2nd tier" relatives or if they associate anytime other than official family get togethers such as Christmas, weddings, the royal jubilee etc. We know that David Linley must have a relationship with William since he let them stay in his property in Franch. But I wonder about the others like Helen Taylor, Frederick and Sophia, the Olgivies. I suppose like any family, they see them from time to time but probably run in completely different circles due to age differences as much as anything.

They did have a relationship with Frederick and Gabriella as children simply because they all grew up in KP.

I know they all grew up at KP but it is a pretty big place with walled gardens and their mothers were rumoured to be not even remotely close so it is possible they had very little contact as children at KP. Also Harry & Wills left KP in their early teens so contact would have been even more limited from then on.

Peter Philips made the following comment which I think gives an insight into relationships in the BRF, particularly whether they socialise.

He said he was looking forward to having his niece or nephew round to play with his own children, Savannah, three, and one-year-old Isla, in future as "we had cousins growing up so it's always nice to have family, to have cousins to play with. It's fantastic".

(Source Telegraph 08072013).

I gleaned from this that this was playing mainly with the Wales as the ages are closest, but that doesn't mean that the Yorks and wider family would be excluded.

This is why I kind of feel bad for the Wessexes. They don't have Mountbatten-Windsor cousins of the same age, so they don't get the same experience growing up that their elder cousins had.

At the same time, it's awesome that the children of Anne and the children of Charles (or at least William) are all having close-in-age children, for that very reason. Hopefully the Yorks and Harry are able to follow suite.

I do feel for the Wessex children too, but they do have Savannah and Isla and other future second cousins who are of their age who they can socialise with as they get older, if they really want to. They have missed out on some of the experiences their older cousins had, such as skiing together and attending church with their cousins etc. I am sure, however, that their older cousins are good with them. We saw images of little 2 year old James holding Peter Phillips' finger as they departed the Hebridean Princess in 2010. The age gaps are very big, but I am sure they are all very good with their little cousins. I can also imagine that when Louise and James were born they all loved passing the baby around at Sandringham for the Christmas gatherings!

They are also of an age with the Linley children so they do have family - just not first cousins and they will also have fun with Peter and the new generation of children - being the link between the generations.

Lady Helen Taylor's daughters Eloise and Estella are also a similar age to Louise. I remember seeing photos from 2011's Trooping the Colour and Louise was talking to Estella, so she has other members of the family who are close in age to her. Albert and Xan Windsor are also a similar age to Viscount Severn, but I don't know how close they are.

So just from speculation, it's more likely true that HM The Queen's favorite grandchild is HRH Princess Beatrice? Ive read this many of times before--obviously there has been much speculation about her favorite, but Ive read Princess Beatrice more than any other.

I don't know about her favorite grandchild but Beatrice & Eugenie do spend a great deal of time with their grandmother and grandfather.
