I really wish that Sophie and Camilla were given the order.
I imagine that Camilla might be made a Lady of the Garter if Charles inherits the throne, but I can't imagine The Queen bestowing the honor on her. There aren't many Ladies of the Garter to begin with, even supernumerary royal ones like Anne or Alexandra, and royal spouses, with the exception of the consort, don't seem to make the cut.

Traditionally the only ladies who marry into the RF who get the Garter are the Consorts to Kings, starting with Queen Alexandra in 1901, followed by Mary in 1910 and Elizabeth, the Queen Mother in 1936. From that precedent I would assume Camilla will get the Garter when Charles becomes King but that Sophie will never get it.

I was fortunate to be in the crowd at Windsor Castle for the Garter procession in 1982. A co-worker had received tickets through the lottery (we both applied but she was the lucky one) and she was unable to go at the last minute. So I went with my Mom. As part of the crowd we were able to watch the parade to the Chapel and the carriage procession after the service. The tickets were gorgeous--they were printed on fancy cardstock. To be honest I can't remember if we were able to hear the service via loudspeakers or not. It seems like we were but the sound was not the greatest.

I couldn't believe how close we were to the actual participants. So close that I could tell that the Queen wears face powder. It was a really magical day.

To save the Garter thread from becoming bogged down in an argument about who Prince William resembles, all posts on the subject have been moved to the Family Resemblances thread.

Now, that's a magnificent picture, Warren, thanks for sharing it!
I am glad that little has changed in the splendour and magnificence of the ceremony for many centuries; judging by the sea of people who were there to witness it, they are glad such ceremonies still exist as well.

I'm glad no one had malfunctions with their feathers this year though.

Maybe Alexandra's daughter, I see a resemblance.
But the woman in Warrens post is the Duchess of Gloucester.

I'll go again! :) That's Julia Ogilvy, daughter-in-law of Princess Alexandra.

Your quite right. :)

Mad Hattery! » Blog Archive » Trooping the Colour: Mrs. Julia Ogilvy

An article about her hat, confirming your suggestion. I thought it was Alexandra's daughter at first glance.

Order of the Garter - denial possible?

Dear members,

I´ve got a question concerning the Order of the Garter. Even if nobody can answer this question, I´m interested in your opinion!

Some encyclopeadia state that the order was deprived from the german Emperors Wilhelm I. and Wilhelm II. and from Emperor Franz Joseph I. of Austria after WW I. Other sources make no mention of this.

In the case of Wilhelm II. I have no doubt that in theory this was possible. He was still alive. But with Wilhelm I. and Franz Joseph I. I´m very uncertain! Both persons were already dead, when the denial took place.

In german law for example, you cannot take royal, noble or academic ranks away from someone who is dead.

Or is the memership in the Order of the Garter a personal honour, which always ends automatically with the death of the bearer and the denial was only pro forma because the germans were so evil ?

Thank you in advance for your answers!

Greetings,

Mathis von Augustenburg
