1016 Death of Edmund Ironside. Son of Ethelred the unready by his first wife. He was buried at Glastonbury with his grandfather Edgar. Unfortunately his was one of many tombs destroyed during the reformation. Edmund's sons were exiled to Sweden by Cnut who claimed the throne.

Cnut would marry Edmund's stepmother Emma. Emma's children with Ethelred were in Normandy under the protection of their mother's family.

1869- birth of James Hamilton, 3rd Duke of Abercorn. Not royal himself, but he is the great-grandfather of Princess Diana. His daughter Cynthia was married to the 7th earl Spencer.

What a shame that Edmund's tomb at Glastonbury Abbey was lost along with that of Edmund I who were both buried near the high altar.

1420- Henry V enters the city of Paris.

1241- death of Isabella of England, Holy Roman Empress. Daughter of King John, she married Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor. She was his third wife. Of her four children only the youngest Margaret would reach adulthood (one son reached 15, 2 children died in infancy). Margaret married Albert 'the degenerate' Landgrave of Thuringia (heir to the Margrave of Meissen). Margaret famously left her husband after discovering his affair but not before biting her son on the cheek (He became known as Frederick 'the bitten' after. The family had some interesting monichers in Meissen). Margaret fled her husband to Frankfurt where she was aided by the citizens, but died six weeks later.

The Dowager Queen died 12 years into the reign of her niece in law Queen Victoria at Bentley Priory in Middlesex and was buried beside her husband at St. George's Chapel, Windsor.

Dec 4 1259- Treaty of Paris is signed. It ended what is sometimes known as the 'first hundred years war'. Henry III withdraws claims to French territories including Normandy, in return for the French king withdrawing support to English rebels. He maintained control of Aquitane. The treaty is believed to be one of the causes of the second and more famous Hundred years war.

1745- Bonnie Prince Charlie and his troops reach Derby. It is the furthest south the Scottish army will reach during the second Jacobite rising.

1260- Aymer de Valence, bishop of Winchester dies. Aymer was a half brother of Henry III. He was the son of Isabella of Angouleme by her second husband Hugh. Henry III had him elected bishop but he was illiterate, ignorant of English language or culture, and secular. He fled Winchester before he was even consecrated. Pope Alexander IV supported him though and called for him to be reinstated. He was consecrated and on his way back to England when he fell ill in Paris and died.

902- Death of Ealhswith of Wessex, consort of Alfred the Great. Her father was a Mercian nobleman named Ethelred Mucel. Her mother was a member of the Mercian royal house.

She is considered a pre-congregation saint. Her saint day is July 20.

1556- Birth of Anne Cecil, daughter of Elizabeth I's trusted advisor William Cecil. She was maid of honor to Elizabeth until her marriage to the 17th earl of Oxford. Her husband is one of the people suspected of having actually written Shakespeare's works.

Anne also seems to have enjoyed high favour with Elizabeth I as she was married to the Earl at Westminster Abbey and also following her death in 1588 she was also buried in Westminster Abbey.

1608- Birth of General George Monck. Though he served under Cromwell as well, he was instrumental in the restoration of Charles II to the throne. Among his many honors he was given by Charles II, he was made Duke of Albemarle.

1295- death of Gilbert de Clare, 7th earl of Gloucester. He was related to the royal family by both marriages. He was a nephew in law to Henry III, and son in law to Edward I.

His first wife Alice was the daughter of Hugh XI of Lusignan. Hugh and Henry III were maternal half-brothers. Henry was the son of King John and Isabelle of Angouleme. After the death of John, Isabelle married Hugh V of Lusignan with whom he had 9 kids, Alice's father being the eldest. When her husband was stripped of his titles due to his role in the Second baron's war and the massacre of the Jews at Canterbury (which he led), Alice was spared the king's wrath due to being his niece, and was allowed to remain on the lands. Her husband later came back in royal favor by supporting Edward I, being the first to swear loyalty to him. Gilbert later annulled the marriage, after the birth of two daughters, claiming Alice was in love with her cousin.

His second wife was Joan of Acre, the daughter of Edward I. It was Edward's attempt to bind Gilbert to the throne. Gilbert's lands were shared by the couple, and could only be inherited by a shared child. If their marriage was childless, the lands reverted to the throne. The couple had four children.

1674- death of Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon. His eldest daughter Anne married the future James II, making Edward grandfather to Mary II and Anne. He died in exile in France, though he was eventually returned to England and buried in Westminster privately. After the great fire and plague in London, and the failure of the second anglo Dutch war he was forced to give up his place as lord chancellor to Charles II. He faced trial for crimes including ignoring Habeus corpus, and escaped to France. His titles and lands were not attained, thanks to the support of his son in law, but he was banished.

1688- The Battle of Reading, the only substantial military action during the Glorious Revolution. James II's larger army was defeated by the forces of William III. 2 days later, on December 11 James would flee first to France and later to Ireland, realizing his only real troops in GB he could depend on were his Irish forces.
