Wonderful monuments but apparently Cromwell and the Puritans viewed them with distaste and were too Catholic so had several of them demolished during the English Civil War.Many of the remaining crosses were lovingly restored by the Victorians.

Such terrible vandalism committed in the name of religion. The Victorians are often criticised for their over restorations but they certainly did succeeding generations a favour with their work on the crosses.

Yes indeed but I didn't realize that 9 out of the original 12 crosses are largely destroyed ,Eleanors Viceral tomb at Lincoln Cathedral was also smashed by the Puritans but in 1891 it was restored with a Victorian replica. The queen's heart was buried at Blackfriars Priory in London but was lost during the Reformation.

The iconoclasts did terrible damage all over England which is why the survivors at Geddington & Hardingstone are so remarkable. You can certainly see the difference in the stonework between them & the Victorian cross at say Charing Cross. The Victorian work is admirable but in no way competes in quality with the originals.

It is such a pity that so many wonderful pieces of art and history were lost due to religious intolerance. Some of the great painters and artistis were arrested and tortured for being 'heretics' due to their art work. Sad to think of the amazing pieces lost due to the reformation's iconoclasm.

November 28 also marked the birth of Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII and wife of James IV of Scotland. Born in 1489 she was the eldest daughter. Of course James VI and I of England and Scotland was her great-grandson.

And in 1499 the death of Edward Plantagenet, 17th Earl of Warwick. He was the younger brother of Margaret Pole. Their father George was the brother of Edward IV and Richard III. He was executed as many members of his family were including his sister.

November 29:

1338-birth of Lionel of Antwerp, 3rd born son of Edward III (2nd to reach adulthood). He had one child Philippa. Philippa's granddaughter Anne was the mother of Richard, Duke of York, making Anne the grandmother of Edward IV and Richard III (and Lionel great-great-great grandfather).

1330- Death of Rodger Mortimer, lover of Queen Isabella, who helped her rebel against her husband Edward II. He was later over thrown by Edward III and hung for seizing power.

Mortimer was buried later at Wigmore Abbey in Herefordshire, England, his widow Joan de Geneville later joined him there but the tomb and burial were both lost during the Reformation and the abbey in a ruin.

I love the clipped tones of the narrator! I don't think anyone talks like that in England any more, not even The Queen herself:lol:

Interestingly at the end it shows the carriage going past Hyde Park Corner so it must have taken the long way round from Westminster Abbey via Whitehall, Trafalgar Square, Pall Mall, St James's Street, Piccadilly & then Constitution Hill. That's a much longer route than the procession taken by any other royal wedding returning from the abbey in the twentieth century I think unless someone knows differently.

On this day, November 30, 1719 ~ Birth of Augusta of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Princess of Wales. She was the spouse of Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales.

1016 Death of Edmund Ironside. Son of Ethelred the unready by his first wife. He was buried at Glastonbury with his grandfather Edgar. Unfortunately his was one of many tombs destroyed during the reformation. Edmund's sons were exiled to Sweden by Cnut who claimed the throne.

Cnut would marry Edmund's stepmother Emma. Emma's children with Ethelred were in Normandy under the protection of their mother's family.

1869- birth of James Hamilton, 3rd Duke of Abercorn. Not royal himself, but he is the great-grandfather of Princess Diana. His daughter Cynthia was married to the 7th earl Spencer.

What a shame that Edmund's tomb at Glastonbury Abbey was lost along with that of Edmund I who were both buried near the high altar.

1241- death of Isabella of England, Holy Roman Empress. Daughter of King John, she married Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor. She was his third wife. Of her four children only the youngest Margaret would reach adulthood (one son reached 15, 2 children died in infancy). Margaret married Albert 'the degenerate' Landgrave of Thuringia (heir to the Margrave of Meissen). Margaret famously left her husband after discovering his affair but not before biting her son on the cheek (He became known as Frederick 'the bitten' after. The family had some interesting monichers in Meissen). Margaret fled her husband to Frankfurt where she was aided by the citizens, but died six weeks later.

Dec 4 1259- Treaty of Paris is signed. It ended what is sometimes known as the 'first hundred years war'. Henry III withdraws claims to French territories including Normandy, in return for the French king withdrawing support to English rebels. He maintained control of Aquitane. The treaty is believed to be one of the causes of the second and more famous Hundred years war.

1745- Bonnie Prince Charlie and his troops reach Derby. It is the furthest south the Scottish army will reach during the second Jacobite rising.

1260- Aymer de Valence, bishop of Winchester dies. Aymer was a half brother of Henry III. He was the son of Isabella of Angouleme by her second husband Hugh. Henry III had him elected bishop but he was illiterate, ignorant of English language or culture, and secular. He fled Winchester before he was even consecrated. Pope Alexander IV supported him though and called for him to be reinstated. He was consecrated and on his way back to England when he fell ill in Paris and died.

Anne also seems to have enjoyed high favour with Elizabeth I as she was married to the Earl at Westminster Abbey and also following her death in 1588 she was also buried in Westminster Abbey.

On this day, December 7, 1545 ~ Birth of Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, the second husband of Queen Mary of Scotland

1295- death of Gilbert de Clare, 7th earl of Gloucester. He was related to the royal family by both marriages. He was a nephew in law to Henry III, and son in law to Edward I.

His first wife Alice was the daughter of Hugh XI of Lusignan. Hugh and Henry III were maternal half-brothers. Henry was the son of King John and Isabelle of Angouleme. After the death of John, Isabelle married Hugh V of Lusignan with whom he had 9 kids, Alice's father being the eldest. When her husband was stripped of his titles due to his role in the Second baron's war and the massacre of the Jews at Canterbury (which he led), Alice was spared the king's wrath due to being his niece, and was allowed to remain on the lands. Her husband later came back in royal favor by supporting Edward I, being the first to swear loyalty to him. Gilbert later annulled the marriage, after the birth of two daughters, claiming Alice was in love with her cousin.

His second wife was Joan of Acre, the daughter of Edward I. It was Edward's attempt to bind Gilbert to the throne. Gilbert's lands were shared by the couple, and could only be inherited by a shared child. If their marriage was childless, the lands reverted to the throne. The couple had four children.

1674- death of Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon. His eldest daughter Anne married the future James II, making Edward grandfather to Mary II and Anne. He died in exile in France, though he was eventually returned to England and buried in Westminster privately. After the great fire and plague in London, and the failure of the second anglo Dutch war he was forced to give up his place as lord chancellor to Charles II. He faced trial for crimes including ignoring Habeus corpus, and escaped to France. His titles and lands were not attained, thanks to the support of his son in law, but he was banished.

1688- The Battle of Reading, the only substantial military action during the Glorious Revolution. James II's larger army was defeated by the forces of William III. 2 days later, on December 11 James would flee first to France and later to Ireland, realizing his only real troops in GB he could depend on were his Irish forces.
