British Royal Family Engagements 2018

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I think I'm going to cry a little when I see Prince Harry of Wales changes to Duke of Sussex on your list this week. He's all grown up now.

Weekly Update to 24th May, 2018

Harry makes his first appearance as HRH The Duke of Sussex this week as it was announced before the wedding service began that he had been given that title. Meghan also appears simply as Meghan Markle as she entered the chapel under that name but exited as HRH The Duchess of Sussex. Some people will argue I am splitting hairs – but that is how I wanted to do it. The percentage for Meghan includes all three engagements not just the two as The Duchess of Sussex.

I would also like to reiterate that according to the CC only The Queen, Philip, Charles, Camilla, William, Harry and Meghan officially attended the wedding. The rest were lumped together as ‘other members of the royal family’. As such I don’t count them.

Royals who have Official Meetings with Politicians to 24th May, 2018

I would like to point out that most of the Heads of Government who visited the UK for CHOGM were officially received by at least one royal and they are recorded here. The ‘overseas’ meetings are usually with the Head of State and Head of Government, when there are two such positions. Charles has meet the President of Greece, the Prime Minister of Greece and the Leader of the Opposition of Greece during this past week for instance and they are counted as three of his ‘meetings with politicians’. I have recorded the names and positions for UK politicians e.g. Prime Minister, Secretary of State for Education.

HM The Queen – 28
HRH The Prince of Wales– 26 (12 overseas)
HRH The Duchess of Cornwall – 5 (1 overseas)
HRH The Duke of Cambridge – 10 (1 overseas)
HRH The Duchess of Cambridge – 2 (1 overseas)

Bolded are those royals who had an official meeting with a politician this past week.

Unofficial Engagements for Beatrice and Eugenie to 24th May, 2018

Some people have asked why I haven’t included as I did in the past. Simple reason – the source I had in the past stopped giving any updates so I didn’t have any information.

I don’t go looking for these so if I am not given a link I am not able to include any events. The girls may have done more charity type work than this but I haven’t been told about it, hence the figures as they are.

HRH Princess Beatrice of York – 11
HRH Princess Eugenie of York – 7

Weekly Update to 31st May, 2018

You may notice that in some lists Harry is still listed as HRH Prince Henry of Wales. I will change that only when he does something as HRH The Duke of Sussex but they will be changed in time.

This week Andrew has been in China while Charles has been in Romania and Richard in the USA. Otherwise it has been a very quiet week with many of the royals having a pre-summer break it seems (half-term would account for Edward and Sophie.) I am wondering whether Anne is spending some time also doing half-term things with her granddaughters and also preparing for a new baby or just having a week off).

I have Beatrice’s visit to the hospital etc in Sydney down as on the 1st June so that will appear next week.

Sorry folks there will be a delay this week as neither of my sources for the CC have put up any entries since the 6th June. I am then going to be out of internet range (taking kids camping) from Monday to Friday this week say maybe nothing up until next Saturday ...

If someone has the 7th and is able to PM it I will endeavour to get this week up.

Weekly Update to 7th June, 2018

This week saw Andrew finish his overseas tour and Edward start his – almost tag-teaming in China. There was a day or so between Andrew leaving China and Edward arriving.

Tim also did a solo engagement – representing the The Duke of Kent at a funeral – which is a first I think. I know he has done things with other royals e.g. he has sometimes been at an engagement with the Duke of Kent for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission given his own position with CWG but this is the first time I can remember him representing someone at a funeral.

Unofficial Engagements for Beatrice and Eugenie to 7th June, 2018

Some people have asked why I haven’t included as I did in the past. Simple reason – the source I had in the past stopped giving any updates so I didn’t have any information.

I don’t go looking for these so if I am not given a link I am not able to include any events. The girls may have done more charity type work than this but I haven’t been told about it, hence the figures as they are.

HRH Princess Beatrice of York – 12

I will put up the entry up to the 14th June tomorrow as I have to get over a week of camping with 100 or so 15 - 16 year olds.

Weekly Update to 14th June, 2018

A fairly busy week with everyone out and about including everyone’s favourite HRH The Duchess of Kent. It is always nice to see her on those very rare occasions – three times this year.

Charles and Camilla have been on their annual tour to Ireland, including a visit to the Republic again.

One thing I found interesting this week was that Anne went to her school’s fiftieth year reunion – and that was classed as an official engagement. She wasn’t listed as a ‘patron’ or anything like that of the school – unlike the role she has with Gordonstoun. I doubt that the rest of us would regard a high school reunion as ‘work’ but obviously Anne does.

This is the fastest Prince William has got to 100 engagements. Previously it was September before he reached 100.

He has no excuses this year though as he doesn't have a job anymore.

Harry has no excuses either, having quit his job in the army some years ago now, but still lags behind his brother

Harry did have higher numbers than his brother last year. I know the way you count the events for IG, it made it seem less, but that's quite unfair way to treat his work during IG. He spends just as much time working on those days as the other royals on their away day events. Moreso on some days as it begins early in the morning and doesn't end until well into the evening.

It'll be interesting to see what speed the keep the workload this fall. They obviously had the wedding to deal with earlier this year, and it did seem that Harry was quite involved with the planning of the wedding based on some comments from what was relayed by the people that talked to him at the IG tryouts in Bath. Meghan also seems to have kept quite busy behind the scene both by taking private meetings and making private visits to organizations like Nottingham Academy and visiting the Grenfell Tower victims. Omid reported she's taken just under 100 meetings to learn about the charitable landscape in UK by the time of the wedding.

I counted his IG the same way I counted Anne at the Olympics.

Watching four or five different sports in one day isn't hard work at all (have done it).

He does some work behind the scenes - a few meetings - and they were counted separately.

Last year the CC recorded each sport separately whereas in earlier years it didn't - so clearly they wanted to make it appear he did more work last year than he did - he went to watch sport (which makes up a lot of his engagements anyway).

Re Anne and Benenden, the CC called her “Benenden Senior” which might be as much as a patronage as Guardian or other obscure titles.

Harry has not done much this year and needs to up his game. Hopefully that will happen with the tours.

Reminder that weddings dont rank highly in the BRF. charles deferred his for the funeral of the Pope and William went to NZ (and Aus??? Cant remember) prior to his wedding because of the earthquake.

Duty first

Iluvbertie is TRF’s go to numbers persons. Publishes without fear or favour.

You can't say that IG requires the same of him as Olympics requires of Anne. Nor the same impact. IG wouldn't be sustainable if it weren't for Harry's efforts and the attention that he brings to it. Olympics will go on with or without Anne. And I LOVE what IG does for the competitors and all, but it's certainly not the sport games most people would choose to put on and watch for the gamesmanship like the Olympics or even a regular pro sports game.

Harry serves as that encouragement to keep going despite how difficult it might feel and his involvement in the game does exceed what is typical for Olympics. I did always find it unfairly how they treated IG and how much it required of Harry in the past. And honestly, if we are going down the road on if it's something they enjoy, they should get less credit for it, then there is no end to this. Should soccer, rugby, tennis, and whatever other sport games be counted by each event, or should they only get fractions credit for it? How about when William's event that includes McLaren?

Obviously, you have the right to determine how you count events, and I've always respected that. But let's not pretend that he worked any less on those days than any of the royals do on their away days that include visits to different places with comments that doesn't give credit where credit is due.

Those are both unforeseeable events. In fact, Charles and Camilla had to change the date because of it. I was in no way saying he should neglect his duties because of the wedding, but obviously, there are some things that can be worked around. Obviously, the Sussex wedding was much more of a personal wedding with different choices than your traditional family wedding and the couple was the driving force behind their wedding rather than just making choices with what they are presented with. I'm sure if there was some emergency that required calling Harry away, he'd work with it, but if there isn't, why not have a more relaxed work schedule to get involved with planning the wedding. It is after all a special event, and not something that will be part of his schedule regularly that he will have to work out.

I don't think anyone can accuse him of neglecting his patronages or duties in the first half of the year.

For my school all of us who finished Sixth Form are referred to as xxxx Seniors - just says we finished the school.

It isn't the same as a patronage as it simply a way of showing she finished the school.

If it wasn't to pad his figures last year did they now spell out all the sports in 2016?

In 2016 he attended the Invictus Games - simple.

In 2017 when his figures were abysmal suddenly every single sport he attended was listed.

I counted 2017 the same way I counted in 2016 - he attended the Invictus Games (and in 2015 and 2014).

You seem to be working under a misassumption that Iluvbertie counts Harry’s events differently to other royals. This isn’t true, she counts ONLY what is published in the Court Circular. If you have an issue with the CC you need to take it up with the Queen, since she’s the one who decides what is put in it.

Please check the facts first as IG counts were an exception in Iluvbertie's count last year. Harry's engagement for IG was counted differently than CC.

They simply don't pad figures. It was inaccurately counted for amount of work, and they obviously changed it.

Like I said, you can count it however you want, but let's not act like Harry spent less time working. I think this was discussed awhile back in this thread about the actual time spent on engagements, Harry did spend the time and it certainly isn't unfair to include all of these events and give him credit for it when other royals get credit for spending half an hour at a place.

Didn’t know that, will edit.

However, this count is something she does as a hobby in her free time, so she gets to decide how she does it. All of us are free to do our own count and do it our own way, I know several people who do in fact do this.

I agree that she can count it however she wants to as I've mentioned before. However, when it's used to point out Harry works less than so and so, it's not accurate.

ETA: I do appreciate Iluvbertie's work in compiling all this information for us. We disagree on this obviously, but it doesn't take away from the fact that I recognize this is a lot of work and does provide good and interesting information.

I admire all the work that is done each week to give us the different statistics of what is printed in the Court Circular. Its straightforward reporting of engagments, types of engagements and genres of engagements that the British Royal Famil undertakes.

Each royal has their own roles and ways of doing what they do and it just all adds up to what the "Firm" does. No one is actually "better" or "busier" or more "important" than the other outside of HM, The Queen. Its a team effort and a family working together for common goals.

]Weekly Update to 21st June, 2018

An interesting week with the Garter Ceremony and lots of royals out and about at Ascot but … the CC only records the Queen as attending Ascot or more specifically ‘The Queen honoured Ascot Races with her presence today’. In the past the entry would include the Duke of Edinburgh but no other royals ever attend Ascot officially.

We now have The Prince of Wales, The Duke of York, The Earl of Wessex and The Princess Royal all with their double centuries for the year while The Queen, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke of Cambridge, The Countess of Wessex and the Duke of Gloucester have reached their centuries (to use cricket terminology – my other great passion, besides history and the British royals is cricket so pardon me for using the two together. I wonder how many will reach the triple or even quadruple centuries before the end of the year and will anyone top the 500 mark – a mark only one man has achieved in test history – Brian Charles Lara from the West Indies).

Unofficial Engagements for Beatrice and Eugenie to 21st June, 2018

Some people have asked why I haven’t included as I did in the past. Simple reason – the source I had in the past stopped giving any updates so I didn’t have any information.

I don’t go looking for these so if I am not given a link I am not able to include any events. The girls may have done more charity type work than this but I haven’t been told about it, hence the figures as they are.

A note about this week: I don’t add Ascot to the unofficial engagements for Beatrice and Eugenie as Ascot doesn’t count for anyone else and so not as unofficial engagements for them. These are engagements that for other royals would be given CC credit such as a charity based function.

HRH Princess Beatrice of York – 12
HRH Princess Eugenie of York – 9

Sorry folks.

There will be a delay with the most recent update due to the fact that last Thursday my computer completely froze (black screen of death - and nothing I have found so far fixes it. I will have to take it to an expert but ... I am currently bedbound with a broken bone in my knee and the very real possibility of a knee replacement coming up within the next month or two as well.) School has lent me a computer for the holidays but I am not sure they will let me have it until I am able to get my other one fixed and while I am both bedbound and unable to drive (which could be until December I may find myself out of contact with the rest of the world for a long time - I am hopeful that as I teach final year students they may let me keep this computer until the students have finished their exams in November and if so there won't be a real problem for me from a computer/internet point of view).

I will need to take it slowly to do the regular checks I do on the CC as having a computer on my lap and not on a table is putting pressure on the knee (and no I don't have a lap table).

Currently I am living on my own, due to a range of ongoing issues and am relying on friends for quite a lot. Asking them to try to get my computer fixed is a possibility - by taking it to school and having the IT guys there take a look maybe - but not for another three weeks when school returns or asking them to source a lap table.

In the meantime please be patient and the update for last week will come - along with this weeks.

:previous: You've certainly had a string of unfortunate incidents IluvBertie. Glad that the school has found a way to make it possible for you to continue teaching. Sorry about the knee and I hope that you'll make a full recovery after your surgery.
