British Royal Family Engagements 2018

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Weekly Update to 15th March, 2018

A fairly normal week with lots of engagements. The Duke of Gloucester is overseas undertaking a number of engagements in Malawi. Many of them have been related to his role as Patron of the Lilongwe Wildlife Trust – an organisation he has been involved with for many years – indicating that conservation in Africa is not something new for the BRF to be involved with, despite the way the media has portrayed William and Harry’s interest.

Charles ‘won the race’ to reach the century first this year (I am sure there is no such ‘race’ within the family but many people are interested in the ‘league table’ idea).

Royals who have Official Meetings with Politicians to 15th March, 2018

Over the years there has been a lot of criticism of Charles in particular meeting with various Members of Parliament. As someone who regularly reads the CC I am aware that not only does Charles do this but most of the members of the British Royal Family do as well. I thought it would be useful to keep a count at least of which royals meet with politicians.

I am not including the number of times HM meets with incoming or outgoing High Commissioners or Ambassadors. That would add many more to HM’s count in this category.

HM The Queen – 17
HRH The Prince of Wales– 5
HRH The Duchess of Cornwall – 1
HRH The Duke of Cambridge – 2
HRH The Duchess of Cambridge – 2

The forums are such a treasure trove of info. Take a look here at last year's totals to date to compare who's working, how year to year. Edward in second place in the 2018 League Table drove me to go and look this up. But there are lots of interesting comparisons to make. http://www.theroyalforums.com/forum...-engagements-2017-a-41711-14.html#post1969623.

Being able to easily retrieve the results and make this comparison is just one reason I can ever thank Iluvbertie enough for all the hard work. :flowers:

As I am now working part-time one of the things I am doing is a complete analysis from 2010 so I will have some further comparisons come the end of this year or next.

I may go right back to 1997 using the online CC but decided to start with 2010 as it is a nice round number.

By doing the analysis using the same criteria I hope to have more information for people.

And before I get a 'get a life' type comment or PM, this is my hobby - and everyone should be able to enjoy a hobby without snide comments - either on this board or via the more insidious PM (and yes I have had some).

Then let me say this to you. I appreciate that this is your hobby as it enhances my own enjoyment of reading about and discussing the various royal families. :flowers::flowers:

Weekly Update to 22nd March, 2018

Another fairly standard week with a range of engagements carried out by most of the family. Both Edward and Anne have now joined Charles with over 100 engagements for the year.

Next week will be delayed as a) the CC hasn’t updated since the 22nd and I have heard elsewhere that there has been no entries in The Times for the 23rd, 24th or 25th so maybe that is why there is nothing on the online site. That would mean Harry’s visit to Belfast on the 23rd was a private visit if there is no CC anywhere for last Friday.

Just found this very interesting statistical review of royal duties last year https://writeroyalty.com/2017-annual-statistics-review-of-the-royal-family/

That is a really interesting review.

I don't have the computer skills to do it like that - wish I did.

There are some things in there I may try to incorporate - such as the regions of the UK but not this year.

The ages I already do - as can be seen I do the percentage by ages and it is clear there is no one in their 20s now (and by the end of this year there will only be one royal in her 20s anyway - Eugenie as Beatrice turns 30 in August). There will also be a big increase in the 'over 70s' next year when Charles' figures move into that decade (not until November this year so very few will be there this year but some will).

I would recommend people take a look at that analysis as it is well done - and is graphic rather than text based as mine is.

You’re our resident numbers person here at TRF. You do great work and the members appreciate all you do.

Thanks for the new "meeting with politicians" category! It's worthy and informative.

Interestingly the online CC has actually put up the 23rd March which other sources have not yet done. They lead the pack on this one - ahead of the print CC and other online sources (which, I believe take their lead from the printed or online Times anyway).

Amazing. Wonders will never cease.

You’re our resident numbers person here at TRF. You do great work and the members appreciate all you do.

Completely agree. I've thanked Iluvbertie many times, but her work is very much appreciated by many of us and long may it continue! ?

Weekly Update to 29th March, 2018

One of the slowest weeks of the year in terms of the number of engagements but that is not surprising as it was Holy Week and many of the family are on their Easter breaks. This week and next week are usually quite slow but next week does have Charles and Camilla in Australia to push up the numbers with Edward arriving the week later.

I would also like to thank all those people who in one way or another - publicly in this thread, in other threads, on other boards, through the 'Thanks' button or via PM who have given me positive feedback. It is great to think that people do appreciate what I do here (which I do for my own personal enjoyment but it is lovely to see others also enjoying what I do).

Royals who have Official Meetings with Politicians to 29th March, 2018

Over the years there has been a lot of criticism of Charles in particular meeting with various Members of Parliament. As someone who regularly reads the CC I am aware that not only does Charles do this but most of the members of the British Royal Family do as well. I thought it would be useful to keep a count at least of which royals meet with politicians.

I am not including the number of times HM meets with incoming or outgoing High Commissioners or Ambassadors. That would add many more to HM’s count in this category.

HM The Queen – 18
HRH The Prince of Wales– 6
HRH The Duchess of Cornwall – 1
HRH The Duke of Cambridge – 2
HRH The Duchess of Cambridge – 2
HRH Prince Henry of Wales – 1
HRH The Duke of York – 4

Countries Visited this Year to 29th March, 2018.

Strange ideas come to people in the middle of the night while watching the cricket from South Africa … keeping a record of which countries are actually visited throughout the year by members of the BRF so here is the list up to this week.

I will keep this record for my own personal interest and add it if people would like to see it.

I put them in alphabetical order as date order is not possible with a number of them happening on the same day at times – and because later this week the ‘most important country of all’ ;);) will top the list (I am a proud Aussie remember and we have Charles and Camilla visiting this week and Edward next week).

Cyprus (HRH The Duke of Kent)
India (HRH The Earl of Wessex)
Malawi (HRH The Duke of Gloucester)
Malta (HRH The Countess of Wessex)
Norway (TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge)
South Africa (HRH The Duke of Gloucester)
South Korea (HRH The Princess Royal)
Spain (HRH The Duchess of Gloucester)
Sri Lanka (TRH The Earl and Countess of Wessex)
Sweden (TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge)

:previous: Brilliant. I am assuming it's countries visited included on the CC. Not countries visited officially. Because someone could visit a country, like the SK Olympics as example, for the event but not have it be an official visit (state or otherwise).

Any event in the CC is an official event or visit.

It may not be a 'state visit' but it is still an 'official visit'.

I'm very excited for this analysis. Thanks for sharing the results with us.

Weekly Update to 5th April, 2018

This was an easy week to do as there were no engagements from the 30th March until the 4th April due to the Easter break but boy … did they stack up the engagements on the 4th and 5th.

Charles did 12, Camilla 10, Andrew 9, Edward 1, Anne 2, Richard 4, Birgitte 1 and The Duke of Kent 6 for a total of 45 in 2 days (although it was also 45 across the week).

Like the Christmas Service the Easter Day church service is a private event even though we see the royals going to church. It didn’t even get a mention in the CC as ‘divine service’ which does appear at Christmas and when the Queen is at Sandringham even though there are no names listed then.

Harry had events in Botswana and S Africa in the CC in January. There was a real mess with the CC at the time as I remember, probably because these were tagged onto a private visit (as he does)

Kensington Palace
22nd January 2018
Prince Henry of Wales, Patron, Rhino Conservation Botswana, this afternoon visited Chobe Game Lodge, Kasane, Botswana, and was received by the Hon. Tshekedi Khama (Minister of Environment, Natural Resources, Conservation and Tourism).

25th January, 2018
Prince Henry of Wales, Patron, Rhino Conservation Botswana, this morning visited the headquarters in Maun, Botswana.

His Royal Highness, President, African Parks, later visited the headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa.

I have the events in the 'count' but simply missed it when I put this together - thanks - as they were in January. I do have them in the excel sheet but didn't go back far enough obviously.

Been edited now to add in - both in this thread and in the word document at home so won't be missed in future.

May I ask people who wish to point out an error to do so in a polite manner rather than a nasty one.

I have had a few such PM's and it is rather hurtful. I do this as a labour of love to share with all of you but when someone then sends a PM about something I have missed and does so in a nasty tone it makes me question whether it is worth it.

I have had a few nasty PM about this - people questioning my sanity for wanting to do this at all so please if you wish to point something out please be polite or don't do it at all.

What you do here, Iluvbertie, is something that is unique to TRF and its a huge advantage for us that really do enjoy and pay attention to the painstaking work you do each week to bring us a concise accounting of what the British Royal Family does.

Just remember that if anyone has a problem with it, its *their* problem and nasty PMs are easily solved with the one good word called "delete". Those PMS aren't a reflection on you at all but on the persons writing them. ;)

Oh I’m so sorry you have had that happen. I hope they now know how rude they have been and send a apology [emoji253]

Your copious hours of laboring over the engagements on our behalf is something for which I should express my gratitude. I fully agree with what Osipi said.

I second all the positive thoughts Iluvbertie, you do a damn good job for all of us to benefit from your labor of love. The only thing you should be hearing at the very least is "thank you". I doff my hat in gratitude,

I hope this post wasn’t referring to the short thank you message I sent. I was just trying to be short and concise, not offensive in any way and I hope this wasn’t how it came across. Perhaps I missed a nuance in a foreign language, if so I apologise. I really appreciate everything you do and I know it’s a lot of work:flowers:.

Just remember that if anyone has a problem with it, its *their* problem and nasty PMs are easily solved with the one good word called "delete". Those PMS aren't a reflection on you at all but on the persons writing them. ;)

Completely agree with you :)

No way. I didn't even see your Thank You until after I had made this post.

I received a couple of rude PMs yesterday and have received a few others over the last couple of months questioning my sanity for wanting to do this.

For those who don't know:

In late 2011 my father died and I was very, very close to him. I went into a very bad depression, even worse than when my mother died. My family tried but just couldn't help me. My psychiatrist said I needed a new hobby as my previous hobbies weren't helping (and arthritis wasn't helping as I love doing tapestry and knitting but my fingers make this hard). 2012 was Jubilee Year and at the end of 2011 I remembered reading Tim O'Donovan's figures for 2011 I decided to keep my own record for 2012. Part way through the year I let on here that I was doing so and agreed to share my figures with the group. As the years have gone on I have done more and more - now out of enjoyment as much as therapy.

Some time later - in 2014 - I was also diagnosed as high functioning autistic - which explains why, at times, I can be quite picky about the littlest thing.

Sorry if this seems a bit personal but I thought by explaining a bit more about myself to explain why I enjoy doing this and sharing it with people here but also why I may react or even overreact at times.

Eh, I think those of us who have ‘’weird’’ hobbies have to accept that not many people will understand them and just ignore these comments. Some people are just rude and should get a ? :censored:. There’s a lot of us who appreciate what you do, even when we don’t say it, so don’t let a few bad apples spoil something you like doing.

For example, no one in real life shares my royal hobby, most of them don’t even know which European countries have royal families. Which is why I really appreciate this board where I can share my interest with like-minded people.
