Could part of the reason behind the RF doing less compared to this point last year be because there has been a general election during which time the RF are usually rather low key.

Not really. They were already down before the General Election was called and remained much the same difference between this year and last year throughout the actual election. In the week since the election - i.e. last week - they dropped considerable (probably due to the 90th birthday service for the Queen being on the 10th June which accounted for around 20 - 40 of my count last year) along with Trooping the Colour and the Birthday lunch - all would have been in the corresponding week to last week last year.

The big difference is really those missing 10 days in February on which I believe around 95 engagements were carried out but I don't have the details as the online British Monarchy website refuses to put them up for some reason. They have also missed the 2nd May - again I believe there were about 8 - 10 engagements that day and missing the 9th and 10th June (at the very least the 10th June would acknowledge Philip's birthday and so that is another definite miss).

Weekly Update to 21st June, 2017

A very slow week this week – even though there have been royals out and about at the races. As in the past only the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are ever official attendees at Ascot and this year only The Queen from Wednesday on. This update is also only up to Wednesday the 21st June as the website hasn’t updated to the 22nd yet and so that means waiting until at least next Wednesday here until I get the next update due to time differences.

Year to Date Total – 1622 (1613 – up 9)

Comparison with last year – 1871-1622=249 fewer this year in comparison to last year. NB With no updates from the 17th – 27th February this appears to be out by at least 95 but that is what they are recording so that is what it is – down 249 to this point of the year compared to how many were done last year. The 95 isn’t my figure but was calculated by someone else so I am not sure how it would stack up to my figures. In addition to those 95, however many there were on the 2nd May there are also missing dates in June (16th, 17th and 22nd – where at least 24 were done due to Trooping, Ascot and some we know about the Queen, Charles and William).

Percentage of Engagements

90s (Elizabeth, Philip) – 11.7%
80s (Edward Kent, Alexandra) – 5.5%

FAILURE of British Monarchy Website to UPDATE CC

The weekly failure of the British Monarchy website: 16th, 17th, 18th and 22nd June (this includes the day that The Queen and William went to Grenfell Towers victims, Charles did an investiture AND Trooping the Colour)

No engagements from earlier in the year: 2nd, 4th, 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th January, 2017, 11th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th February and 19th, 26th March, 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th April (Easter Long weekend), 2nd May, 14th and 28th May, 201,7, 9th,10th June (10th would normally have something to acknowledge Prince Philip’s birthday)

Those underlined are dates on which other sources indicate there were official engagements but the British Monarchy CC has, for some reason, decided not to update on their site.

This is the worst year I have ever come across for keeping this online CC up to date. It has been steadily going downhill since they updated the website.

Types of Engagements to 21st June, 2017

NOTE: If you add up the totals from this section they will invariably be more than the weekly and yearly totals because of the way engagements are described e.g. HM ‘received and invested an individual’ on the 3rd January which is why she has ONE engagement but there are two items listed here. I do NOT count ‘where received by the Lord Lt or someone else when there is more to the engagement unless it is at the start of an official visit overseas e.g. Anne was ‘received by the Deputy Lt of Oxfordshire for her engagement but that was simply a handshake before entering the conference type thing as opposed to a formal start to a tour such as we saw last year when Charles and Camilla visited the Middle East.

Specific Charities or Organisations Supported via an Official Engagement to 21st June, 2017 – Part A

It should be noted that the event/s involving a charity/organization may or may not be carried out by the patron, president etc. It should also be noted that sometimes an event is related to two or more charities or organisations and I have recorded all of them here. Both Camilla and Andrew attended such events during this past week.

I have changed ‘Royal Colonel’ to Honourary Military Appointment because Camilla’s engagement this week wasn’t as a ‘Royal Colonel’ but as an Honourary Appointment so I put them all together rather than split them.

Weekly Update to 29th June, 2017

Sorry for the delays but I have been laid up in bed - have been able to make some posts but not concentrate as necessary to do all of this.

The next week will be some way off - or will only be to the 3rd July as the online CC has left out everything from the 4th - 7th (Tuesday to Friday) so most of the Queen's Holyrood Week was obviously unofficial this year. It should also be noted that there were no official engagements on the 30th June - Charles and Camilla were in Canada and had been officially received the day before but anything that did on the 30th weren't official. Next week's update will therefore be very short due to the lack of information given in the online CC.

HM The Queen – 132 (115 – up 17 – 7.5%)

Year to Date Total – 1756 (1622 – up 134)

Comparison with last year – 2036-1756=320 fewer this year in comparison to last year. NB With no updates from the 17th – 27th February this appears to be out by at least 95 but that is what they are recording so that is what it is – down 320 to this point of the year compared to how many were done last year.

FAILURE of British Monarchy Website to UPDATE CC

The weekly failure of the British Monarchy website: NONE

No engagements from earlier in the year: 2nd, 4th, 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th January, 2017, 11th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th February and 19th, 26th March, 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th April (Easter Long weekend), 2nd May, 14th and 28th May, 201,7, 9th,10th June (10th would normally have something to acknowledge Prince Philip’s birthday), 16th, 17th and 18th (this includes the day that The Queen and William went to Grenfell Towers victims, Charles did an investiture AND Trooping the Colour)

Those underlined are dates on which other sources indicate there were official engagements but the British Monarchy CC has, for some reason, decided not to update on their site.

This is the worst year I have ever come across for keeping this online CC up to date. It has been steadily going downhill since they updated the website.

Is there a list anywhere of at what age each member of the BRF became a full time working royal?

Not that I am aware of one, but that being said some of them wouldn't be too hard to work out:

Andrew was when he retired from the Navy - 2001 - so he would have been 41?

Ed & Sophie was 2002 - Ed would have been 38, Sophie would have been 37

Anne would have been when she stopped competing in equestrian/jockey events but I'm not sure when that was exactly, late 80s/early 90s?

The Duke of Gloucester was in 1972 I think when his brother died, he would have been 28ish?

The Duke of Kent retired from the Army in 1976 so I guess after that he did royal duties, he would have been 40.

I remember reading somewhere that Princess Alexandra started doing royal engagements when she was in her late teens so that would have been in the late 1950s.

Is there a list anywhere of at what age each member of the BRF became a full time working royal?

Until this generation, I don't remember that being a term that got used. I remember the numbers game probably first came up when the revelations about the cost, or lack thereof, for those royals and others living in Kensington Palace. Until then, while people expected the Royals to make appearances, I don't think there was the distinction between a lot and less days worked. Certainly not the term full and part time royal as I recall. That happened as Harry and William came of age.

I agree, in the older days many members of the RF did public duties but some did fewer and held down other jobs such as being in the military etc. But until recently no one used the terms "full time" or "part time". Likewise it would have seemed unlikely a member of the RF would ever "retire", like the Queen Mother they just went on but doing much much less until they could do no more.

Weekly Update to 6th July, 2017

A very slow week this week – largely due to the fact that the only CC decided that nothing from the 4th – 6th July were official engagements – i.e. the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of Holyrood week weren’t official. That I don’t believe but I can only use what the online CC gives me and they have nothing for those three dates and only have Charles and Camilla returning from Canada on the 2nd (which may be all there was I admit). The online CC also didn’t record anything for the 30th June while Charles and Camilla were in Canada so according to that record they were to Canada for three days and did engagements on two of them only – very strange.

FAILURE of British Monarchy Website to UPDATE CC

The weekly failure of the British Monarchy website: NONE (Amazing)

No engagements from earlier in the year: 2nd, 4th, 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th January, 2017, 11th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th February and 19th, 26th March, 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th April (Easter Long weekend), 2nd May, 14th and 28th May, 201,7, 9th,10th June (10th would normally have something to acknowledge Prince Philip’s birthday), 16th, 17th and 18th (this includes the day that The Queen and William went to Grenfell Towers victims, Charles did an investiture AND Trooping the Colour), 30th June, 4th, 5th and 6th July

This is the worst year I have ever come across for keeping this online CC up to date. It has been steadily going downhill since they updated the website.

Having read the announcement about the DOEs final solo engagement, I reflected on how the Queen will handle engagement announcements when he chooses to attend with her. I'm betting full credit every time. We will see.

:previous:
So nice to see this of her, I have always thought she does so well for herself in the family. She has accomplished things in her own right through hard work and determination which shows the type of person she is. Hope to see more of her doing royal duties in the future.
