FAILURE of British Monarchy Website to UPDATE CC

The weekly failure of the British Monarchy website: NONE

No engagements from earlier in the year: 2nd, 4th, 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th January, 2017, 11th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th February and 19th, 26th March, 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th April (Easter Long weekend), 2nd May, 14th and 28th May, 201,7, 9th,10th June (10th would normally have something to acknowledge Prince Philip’s birthday), 16th, 17th and 18th (this includes the day that The Queen and William went to Grenfell Towers victims, Charles did an investiture AND Trooping the Colour), 30th June, 4th, 5th, 6th and 23rd July

This is the worst year I have ever come across for keeping this online CC up to date. It has been steadily going downhill since they updated the website.

What would be the minimum number of royals be to realistically be able to continue to carry out the current number of royal engagements?

For example with Philip retiring it means one fewer royal but hopefully the same number of engagements overall. If the Queen or one or more of her cousins were to retire or pass away, could the decreased number of royals continue to share the same overall workload?

Iluvbertie is probably the best to give an answer but looking at the figures from last years wonderfully helpful thread about engagements:

3803 public engagements were undertaken by the working members of the RF (I've take the total figure Iluvbertie gave and subtracted those for Beatrice, Eugenine, Prince/Princess Michael, James, Louise and Sir Tim).

That means 15 people undertook 3803, an average of 255 each. That being said Charles and Anne can manage 500+ a year each, if each royal working undertook this many you would only need 8 people to match last years total.

Realistically - Philip's numbers could and may well be picked up my W&K & Harry without much extra work - 65 extra for those 3 would make the same total as Philip did all last year.

It really all depends on how W&K and Harry go - do they increase their number a lot to match Anne and Charles or do they do less but more focussed, if they pulled in 400 or so each they could probably meet the engagement numbers of Philip, the Kents and the Gloucesters.

I think the intention is to reduce the overall number of engagements - even though that is increasingly seen as the way to measure the 'work' of the royals.

The interesting thing is to analyse the ages and the numbers.

This year for instance nearly two thirds of all engagements are being done by those over retirement age. It has been consistently at that figure since I started keeping the percentages.

Yes those in their 30s are increasing but it is because Edward and Sophie don't seem to be doing as much especially Sophie e.g. Sophie who has no full-time job and both children at school is only one more than William who has just stepped down from a full-time job and is only 18 ahead of Kate who still has two pre-schoolers at home.

At his busiest Philip did around 700 a year. To reach the around 3800 done last year at that rate only 5 - 6 would be needed (The Queen, Charles, Camilla, William, Kate and Harry) but then what do the others do? Andrew is now 57 and so not going to be getting any 'real job' now. Edward is 53 with no real successful work experience behind him so again unemployable.

Those in their early 70s - Camilla, Birgitte and Richard (will be joined by Charles next year) will keep going for another 20+ years I suspect at around their present numbers - Camilla and Richard around 200 - 250, Charles between 550 and 600 with Birgitte around the 120 - 150 mark = around 1300 between them.

Those in their 80s - The Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra are clearly slowing down due to their recent health issues and are doing about as much as the Duke of Gloucester does on his own.

The Queen is different - as monarch she has so many things that only she can do unless she is declared mentally unfit and then Charles has to do them.

The idea of slimming the monarchy isn't something, I believe that will happen overnight. I suspect the intention is to do so via death so that now there are:

90s - The Queen (Philip has retired so off that list)
80s - The Duke of Kent, Princess Alexandra
70s - The Duke of Gloucester, The Duchess of Gloucester, The Duchess of Cornwall
60s- The Prince of Wales, The Princess Royal
50s - The Duke of York, The Earl and Countess of Wessex
40s - NONE
30s - The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry
20s - NONE
10s - NONE
00s - Prince George and Princess Charlotte

In 30 years time - as George and Charlotte are approaching the ages their parents are now and when they maybe going to start full time royal work there will only be:

90s - Charles (99), Anne (97)
80s - Andrew, Edward, Sophie
70s - NONE
60s - William, Kate, Harry and spouse
50s - NONE
40s - NONE
30s - George and Charlotte

So in 30 years effectively only 6 to do the work currently being done with the occasional appearance from those in their 80s and 90s if still with us - with the exception of Charles assuming he is compus mentus. Highly possible that there maybe none past their 60s and only 2 in their 30s with one extra - George's spouse.

Can that number do close to 4000 engagements - yes - but they would have to work at the pace Philip did in the 60s - 80s rather than the pace that Charles and Anne do now - or convince the public that doing things differently doesn't mean they don't work.

Look at the negative stories about days 'worked' and 'engagements done' because the general public don't see the work that goes on before these engagements - all they see is the 30 - 60 minutes of the engagement and think that that is all there is to their work.

I noticed that Ed and Sophie seem to be doing less, interesting as their children are getting older so one would assume this would give Ed & Sophie a little more time to at least keep up the number of engagements they do if not to allow them to fit more in.
For last year I wonder if part of Sophie's reduced numbers were due to her bike ride and the training that would have taken. It is certainly worth seeing what happens this year...

I think the main reason why Edward and Sophie's numbers were up so high last year - and particularly Edward's were was due to the 60th anniversary celebrations all around the world for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Edward did 171 engagements for that last year. His total for the year was 351 or nearly 49% of his engagements were for DoE and its 60th anniversary celebrations.

I was just thinking about this the other day. Not just the numbers, but I also noticed a tailing off of (what might be) the couple's "putting themselves out there" in a different way as the kids approach teen hood. I think dialing back the spotlight a bit, just by dialing back the press office a bit can be helpful to one's young people who just might need some space. I've always thought the Wessexes have done a good job showing the kids the ropes in an appropriate way. And that means not at the expense of compromising the children's personal lives - just learning to do the official bit well.
And I may just be off topic.

FAILURE of British Monarchy Website to UPDATE CC

The weekly failure of the British Monarchy website: 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th and 10th August (not unusual at this time of the year

There was an engagement on August 4th. Prince Edward was in Edinburgh, 2 engagements are mentioned on the Royal Family twitter, but again the CC isn’t accurate.

If it isn't in the online CC I can't count it. Edward doing those two may be the tip of the iceberg for instance. Who knows what the Dukes of Gloucester and Kent were up to. I can only use the online CC which as you can see is missing many, many dates this year - 44 days out of 222 days or nearly 20% of the days of the year so far are missing - yes 20% of days missing.

One or two days a year are understandable but 1 day in every 5 shows a very poor handle on PR - which is typical of the BRF - relying on past glories rather than the present or future.

They’ve updated August 4-8! Let us hope they’ll do the same for other missing dates (but I shan't hold my breath).
