Weekly update to 7th January, 2016

A slow start to the year is the normal practice but this week the numbers have been inflated by Andrew’s visit to York to visit the flood victims and to get a briefing on the flood damage. Otherwise a normal start with the Queen presenting an Award after church at Sandringham. She presents a number of these awards each year to teachers and students. Anne also attended a Conference, which is again something she does quite often at this time of the year. She is also preparing for an overseas trip this coming week. The only other royal who worked this week was the Duchess of Gloucester who received people associated with her organisations.

The normal details will be added over the coming weeks as the royals return to undertaking their royal work and their figures start going up.

I have changed the percentages to be age related rather than family related. The calculations for some categories will have to change as the year unfolds and some people’s age puts them into a new category e.g. from the 21st April there will be two people in the 90s category while until then there will only be one. From December 25th 2016 there will be a change to the 80s as well (although I doubt it will affect the 2016 figures at all).

FAILURE of British Monarchy Website to UPDATE CC

The weekly failure of the British Monarchy website: None of which I am aware – I have the 3rd, 6th and 7th January. From past experience this is the normal start to the year.

Thank you for carrying this thread on for 2016.

Weekly update to 14th January, 2016

Other than Anne and Tim on their overseas tour, which is quite restful as they have had a couple of days ‘at sea’ rather than only travelling by plane. They have been attending ‘lectures’ on these days but no information has been provided in the CC as to the content of these lectures. Charles has had a couple of meetings.

Interestingly the event at Sandringham last Sunday for the 100th anniversary of the end of the Gallipoli campaign was not an official engagement for any of the royals present, which is why there is 0 against Philip, William and Kate all of whom were clearly present but none of whom were recorded as present by the CC. Nor was The Queen by the way, although she did have another engagement that day as she presented an award to a local teacher for her work in teaching religious studies. This is a regular event for the Queen most Sundays when at Sandringham.

The normal details will be added over the coming weeks as the royals return to week and their figures start going up.

Weekly update to 21st January, 2016

Still a slow week as most of the family are still on their Christmas – New Year break although some have taken a day here or there to undertake an official engagement. Anne and Tim are still overseas and spending quite a few days on board ships between the various islands. On those days they have been attending lectures. On another board I noticed the question was asked, ‘Would these lectures be counted as an official engagement?’ To me they count as they are in the CC and if a royal attended lectures in the UK they would be counted so why not if they are on a ship overseas.

For the first time of more than a decade there is no record of Andrew attending the Davros Forum … another one of those events he has had to give up since giving up being the ‘Trade Ambassador’ although he did attend last year. His number, since giving up that position, have dropped a lot as he tried to find a niche for himself again.

Figures are beginning to slowly change as the older royals return to royal duties since their holidays.

FAILURE of British Monarchy Website to UPDATE CC

The weekly failure of the British Monarchy website: None

Nearly a whole month and they have every day up – long may it continue … but I am not hopeful that they will have it together for the whole year.

Some people will probably ask 'why keep up this record?' The answer is 'to let them know publicly that their performance is being monitored'. Am I vain enough to think it matters - no - but at least the public can see even if it makes no difference to the Royal Household.

Number of Engagements by Royal Undertaken Overseas

I thought I would add this extra piece of information so people can see the numbers undertaken overseas by different royals.

Total 60 (22 – up 38)

This list will only have a royal appear when they have undertaken an official engagement overseas.

HRH The Princess Royal – 30 (11 – up 19)
Vice-Admiral Tim Laurence – 30 (11 – up 19)

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall –20 (0 – up 2 – 2.3%)

The Duchess of Rothesay, Chancellor, the University of Aberdeen, this afternoon opened the Rocking Horse Nursery and visited the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory at the University of Aberdeen and was received by Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of the City of Aberdeen (Councillor George Adam, the Lord Provost).
Her Royal Highness afterwards presented a Coat of Arms to the Burgesses of the Guild of the City and Royal Burgh of Aberdeen to mark the Eight Hundredth Anniversary of their Royal Charter, in the Sir Duncan Rice Library

She visited three areas of the University.

I counted it as two as the first two events happened at the university while the third was to the City and Royal Burgh of Aberdeen. It doesn't indicate that the Sir Duncan Rice Library was at the university. If it is at the university then it is one engagement and not two. As the CC has the first two in the one sentence they are also saying they are one event.

Is there a list anywhere of how many working royals other European royal families have?

The reason for the delay this week is that finally the British Monarchy website has either not updated due to not engagements or to lack of interest by staff. Either way there is nothing official for the 27th or 28th and until I am able to confirm that there were no engagements for any royals on those days I can't update this week.

Weekly update to 28th January, 2016

Some members of the royal family are still to ‘break their duck’ for the year in engagements – notably Philip, William, Kate, Harry and the Duke of Kent – two of the three oldest and the three youngest. Alexandra got ‘off the mark’ this week. (For those who don’t understand the phrases – they are cricket terms and I am currently watching some cricket – a major interest of mine and the reason I went to London last year was to go to the Lords Test for three days – yes days – a test can go for 5 days at 6 hours of play per day – great game). Anne has had a quiet week recovering from her visit overseas although she did attend a funeral.

FAILURE of British Monarchy Website to UPDATE CC

The weekly failure of the British Monarchy website: 27th and 28th January

Nearly a whole month and they have every day up – long may it continue … but I am not hopeful that they will have it together for the whole year.

I clearly spoke too soon when I wrote those words last week as they didn’t manage to even make it through January after all.

Types of Engagements – to 28th January, 2016

This list is growing very slowly with dinners and recital, for instance, appearing this week for the first time this year.

Briefing – 1
Conference – 1
Dinner – 8

Specific Charities/Organisations that have had an engagement – to 28th January, 2016

This list is my creation based on either my perceived interest of the royals or the suggestions people have made. It doesn’t cover all of any royals’ interests of course and more than one royal may attend an event so they aren’t ‘royal specific’. Again this list will grow as royals attend to their own interests with their engagements.

It should also be noted that this is one cause either specific or generic for each royal. Camilla’s focus is ‘literacy’ but I thought I would point out that this week she did two engagements for Osteoporosis. When I retire, or go to part-time working only in a few years I might be able to spare the time to do a full analysis by interest/charity but at the moment I don’t have the time.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme– 5 (Edward 3, Sophie 2)
Pitch@Palace – 1 (Andrew)
The Princes Trust – 1 (Charles)

Number of Engagements by Royal Undertaken Overseas

Total 64 (60 – up 4)

This list will only have a royal appear when they have undertaken an official engagement overseas. An update will only be posted when a royal has undertaken an engagement overseas - and sometimes there is only one engagement e.g. Sophie flies to Germany and visits a regiment and flies back the same day - 1 engagement overseas. So far this year all the overseas engagements were done on Anne and Tim's visit to the South Atlantic.

HRH The Princess Royal – 32 (30 – up 2)
Vice-Admiral Tim Laurence – 32 (30 – up 2)

Future Engagements for February as at 28th January, 2016

I always find it interesting how many engagements, and for whom, are listed on the British Monarchy website ahead of time. The list below shows how many engagements each royal is scheduled to attend in February. Where is says two or more are going to attend they are recorded for each listed royal. If it is ‘group event’ but no list is included then it is listed as a ‘group event’. I like to do this towards the end of each month and then see how many they actually did at the end of the month so thought I would share February with you. I also do this each week. It is pointless including those ‘extra’ royals who aren’t listed separately on the site – hence no Beatrice or Eugenie or Tim on this list. It will be interesting, I think, to revisit this list at the end of February and see how many each listed royal actually did.

This week was a little busier. Anne and Sophie were both overseas – Anne to Cyprus and Sophie to Germany although from the press coverage you wouldn’t know it. Year to date total – 199 (137 – up 62)

90s (Philip) – 0%
80s (Elizabeth, Edward Kent, Katherine Kent) – 6.5%
70s (Richard, Michael, Marie-Christine, Alexandra) – 2.0%
60s (Charles, Camilla, Anne, Tim, Birgitte) – 63.8%
50s (Andrew, Edward Wessex, Sophie) – 27.1%

This list is growing steadily with things like ‘investitures’ appearing this week as the Queen Invested 3 individuals (normal at this time of the year for her) and Charles with two full investitures. Both Charles and Andrew were ‘visited by’ by people from overseas as well.

Specific Charities/Organisations that have had an engagement – to 4th February, 2016

Future Engagements for February as at 4th February, 2016

The figures in brackets are the number of engagements already completed in February – e.g. on the 28th January the Future Engagements said the Queen would undertake 2 engagements in February. The figure in brackets indicates that she has already undertake 2 – so by that reckoning she should do nothing else for the rest of the month. I am sure that she will have that number up quite quickly once she returns to London.

The weekly failure of the British Monarchy website: NONE

Interestingly they had two days up early in the week but they weren’t up on Saturday my time so I asked Cepe for assistance when she willingly provided. Then this morning they were up again – strange goings on in that office this week.

Types of Engagements – to 11th February, 2016

A few engagements associated specifically with The Queen started to appear this week – audiences and council meetings. Audiences are when she meets incoming and outgoing Ambassadors or High Commissioners as well as the holders of specific positions within her household. She also has a weekly audience when in London with the PM and sometimes with someone else after a Council Meeting as was the case this week. Council Meetings are the meetings of the Privy Council. Only 4 members of this over 600 member body actually attended this week.
