I've always said that the staff that's in charge of updating the British Monarchy website and Court Circular is sleeping at the job, but is getting paid for it.

Types of Engagements – 2015 - Part A

Below are the list of types of engagements I counted this year with the total undertaken by each royal, by first names as it is simpler. Edward - A = The Earl of Wessex and Edward - B = The Duke of Kent

A few notes:

• These figures will NOT match the totals given in the weekly updates as there are many times when an engagement is listed as ‘xxxx visited yyyy where they toured zzzz and met people, watched a performance and had a luncheon’. That is ONE engagement in the weekly count but in this analysis each step counts so there would be one entry for each of: visit, toured, met people, performance and luncheon
• This is the first year that I have been reading the CC regularly that I haven’t come across either Andrew or Charles attending the ballet
• I am planning a more detailed analysis of the ‘other events’ next year so entries such as ‘garden parties’ will have their own entry.
• Other sports this year including the Winter Olympics for Anne and Tim and the Commonwealth Games for most other people. Andrew’s attendance at gold events as the Past Captain of St Andrews will be separated out next year.
• Investitures are not only when someone actually invests other people but also when they are invested – which is what Camilla’s were – she was invested as a member of organisations. The Duke of Kent often has investitures connected to his position in the Free Masons, and quite a number of his engagements are also masonic based.
• Church services are the special services for some reason – often linked to a military activity and not the regular weekly services that The Queen and other members of the family attend.

The comments about Kate's figures are exactly the same as those we've posted here ourselves all year.

William did not have a military role this year though so that's no excuse for his total as said by the Mail.

I'm also unsure why the POW would have a lower total because of taking on more of the Queen's duties. Surely they still get reported in the Court Circular and therefore counted?

Perhaps it might be because the PoW and the DoC have carried out a lot more trips overseas on behalf of HM this year, and those trips have had fewer engagements than they would ordinarily do in the UK.

The CC has been very slack this year at updating so those figures in the DM, which I assume are calculated from the British Monarchy website will be out by quite a few. I have Charles at over 500 and Anne at exactly 500 but thanks to Cepe I have been able to access the missing dates from the British monarchy website.


I will put up a complete list of those dates and a quick count of engagements per royal on just those dates later today if people are interested.


As for royal tours - no when Charles goes overseas he does way more per day than when he is at home e.g. in the four days that he and Camilla were in Canada they did almost as many as William and Kate did in 19 days Down Under. C and C averaged around 10 each per day while William and Kate averaged around 2 each per day. Overseas tours, except for William and Kate's tours, tend to see the royals doing a lot more engagements in a short period of time due to the desire to see as many people as possible and to help as many linked organisations as possible.


Interestingly both William and Charles made 5 overseas tours this year - D-Day of course was only a day for William but was still an overseas tour while Charles was there for 2 days - but William and Kate did two engagements on that day to Charles' 8 on D-Day itself and 7 the day before. William also was overseas for the anniversary of the start of WWI, Malta, Down Under and the USA trip.


The other exception are the one day trips to Germany or other military establishments when it is often one engagement during the day. Sophie and Philip do a number of those each year.

A lot of those D-Day events that Charles did were as Colonel of the Army Air Corps and The Parachute Regiment. Camilla even did one with a Canadian regiment that she is colonel of. William only has the Irish Guards in the British army and no foreign military regiments. Kate doesn't have any military regiments.

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall this morning attended the Royal British Legion Service of Remembrance in Bayeux Cathedral, Normandy, and were received by the Prime Minister of the French Republic.
His Royal Highness afterwards attended a Reception at the Sous-Préfecture, Bayeux.
The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall subsequently attended the Royal British Legion and Normandy Veterans Association Service of Remembrance at Bayeux Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery.
Their Royal Highnesses this afternoon attended a Lunch for British veterans at the Veterans' Village, Bayeux Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery.
The Prince of Wales, Admiral, and The Duchess of Cornwall later visited HMS RICHMOND alongside Ouistreham.
Their Royal Highnesses afterwards attended the International Commemoration Service at Colleville-Montgomery-Plage to commemorate the Allied Normandy Landings and were received by The President of the French Republic.
The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall later attended a Ceremony of Remembrance at Juno Beach Centre, Courseulles-sur-Mer, to commemorate Canada's role in the Normandy Landings, and were received by Mr. Manuel Valls (Prime Minister of the French Republic) and the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper MP (Prime Minister of Canada).

While William and Kate:

Their Royal Highnesses later attended a Reception at le Quai du Canada, Arromanches-les-Bains, Normandy.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge this evening attended a Parade and Service of Remembrance for D-Day Veterans at le Quai du Canada.

The Queen and Philip

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh this morning visited Bayeux Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, Normandy, France, and were received by The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall and Mr. Manuel Valls (Prime Minister of the French Republic).
Her Majesty and His Royal Highness were subsequently received by Vice Admiral Peter Wilkinson (National President, the Royal British Legion), Brigadier David Baines (President, Normandy Veterans Association) and Air Chief Marshal Sir Joseph French (Vice President, Commonwealth War Graves Commission).
The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh witnessed a flypast by a Dakota, a Lancaster and two Spitfire aircraft from the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
Her Majesty, Patron, and His Royal Highness, Life Member of the Royal British Legion, then attended the Royal British Legion and Normandy Veterans Association Service of Remembrance and afterwards met veterans of the Normandy Landings who were presented by the Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom, France and Australia and the Governor-General of New Zealand.
The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh were entertained to Luncheon at Château de Bénouville, Ouistreham, this afternoon by The President of the French Republic.
Her Majesty and His Royal Highness later attended a re-enactment of the events of D Day on Sword Beach, Ouistreham, and were received by The President with veterans from all participating nations.

The only person of these six holding an official position on D-Day was Philip as a 'Life Member of the Royal British Legion.

The facts are that William and Kate only attended two events on that day while the older royals attended many more and that this was an overseas visit which is what lead to my original comment.

However if the Cambridges did 5 events when they were in France attention would have been pulled away from the main d-day event where the Queen, Philip, Charles and Camilla were at. Plus the Queen and Philip were on at state visit to France and the palace wanted the focus on that trip also.

I think in terms of overseas visits the DDay one was exceptional in terms of having 3 royal couples in one country at one time, I'm sure the Royal Household managed them carefully to ensure no one was seen to overshadow others.
I'm surprised that William and Kate regularly do less overseas than others as given the large costs etc in over one would think the old view of do we much as possible would be the best for wills and Kate to follow , though of course the Australia tour was different as they had George with them.

I think that part of the difference with The Queen is that some days she has a number of entries where she ‘received xxxx and did yyyy’ and then she ‘received zzzzz and did aaaa’ but on other days she might have ‘received bbbb, ccccc, dddd, and eeee and did fffff’. So some days she has a series of ‘received’s with one person at a time and at other times she has one ‘received’ but there are a number of people. I have counted the one person as an entry as one engagement and I wonder whether Mr O’Donovan counts all of those as one engagement for the day.

Why the difference with Anne, Edward or Richard I really don’t know.

William and Kate – again it could come down to how things were counted with some of the events where they do multiple things in one day in one place e.g. ‘visited xxxxx’ new entry ‘had luncheon’ new entry ‘watched a performance’ – now for some royals they are listed altogether and on other occasions they are listed separately – to me if listed separately I count them separately but if listed as following each other I count it as one but I suspect Mr O’Donovan counts them as one all the time.

I think William & Catherine did a lot on their Canadian/L.A and South Pacific tours. Now that they have George and the new baby on the way, I think their oversea tours is scheduled around the children and they don't want to be away from them too long. Naturally, I think that will change a bit once the kids are older.

It is always impressive to see these figures in black and white (or purple and red lol) and as usual I think all the members of the royal family continue to do extremely well in the number of engagements they carry out when you consider their individual circumstances and relative place in the scheme of things.

I agree wholeheartedly about Catherine's figures because she was out of action for over two months back in the autumn and bounced back into action very soon after!

Maybe the combined/dysfunctional press office has finally figured out that someone has repeatedly taken their eye off the stock pot. In addition to infighting, not doing one's job is high up on my list of "not much excuse" behaviors. Just my opinion, but data haphazardly reported is only vaguely better than no data at all.

Dates missing from Court Circular – 2014 – according to British Monarchy Website

I have checked that there is still nothing up for these dates. There were many days that I needed during the year that are now appearing on the website – interestingly. Any date given here is for dates on which Cepe has sent me the information from The Times.

January – There were some dates initially but they are now up – interesting.

February – 13th, 19th,and 27th (total number of engagements on these three days) Elizabeth 6; Philip 4; Charles 19; Camilla 7; William 1; Harry 1; Andrew 1; Edward A 7; Sophie 6; Anne 13; Tim 3; Birgitte 2; Edward B 4

That is 35 days out of 365 (9.5%) still not up from 2014 and that is less than half of those that I needed help for in the week of the events.

Re your missing day 24th May - those events took place on 23rd. Charles was the only one with an engagement on the 24th (Patron , Music in Churches).

I can't find 29/5 on the Royal website - 19 engagements by my reckoning

This was the day that William and Catherine were in Scotland and did 4 engagements and Harry was in Suffolk.

I really hope that they sort themselves out.

I must have deleted the PM about the 29th May before saving it to my word document as I have the details in the excel file. I suspect that the other dates is a confusion between their dates and The Times dates because, again, I have both dates in the file. Hopefully they will get their act together better this year.

Today that would be considered middle of the pack. Diana and the Queen Mother were nearly tied at 110 and 117 respectively. The DoE was in the high 100's. I've gotten the impression that this year's part-timer numbers would have been considered average back then.

I would say in 1984:

1980 - 1593
1981 - 1789
1982 - 1902
1983 - 1870
1984 - 3017

That yr saw a huge increase by HMQ, DoE, PoW and Princess Anne. But there is a caveat. Prior to 1984, Mr O'Donovan did not include number of engagements abroad. The engagements abroad in 1984 are estimated at c. 900. What he counts has evolved over the years.

It would be interesting to know if the RF really upped their game that much or if the way of counting engagements changed?
By that I mean its hard to use those figures as a direct comparison if we don't know that they were counted in the same way.

I cant give you a full picture because the data is in a box waiting to be unpacked!

UK only though for some of the years.

1980 - 1593
1990 - 2946
2012 - 3536 (Jubilee)
2013 - 2886

But you are still not comparing like with like. You have to think about who was available to undertake engagements (including their health etc.) as well as what that year signified (hence to massive number in 2012)

The BRF are not the sole driver of the number of public events. Demands from Government particularly Foreign Office; requests by Commonwealth Countries; elections; anniversaries; charities funding plans - lots of different things.

And this does not reflect everything they do.
