As I now have the final figures for April I am giving you a breakdown of total of each type of engagement by royal to this point in the year. The number in brackets is the total for that type of engagement by that royal for the year while the number not in brackets is the total for April e.g. The Queen had 5 Audiences in April and has done 31 Audiences so far this year.

Where there is a 0 outside the brackets it means that that royal did none of that type of engagement in April but that they have already done at least one of that type of engagement this year.

Note: those not listed above have done no engagements so far this year - Eugenie and Katherine.

I would also like to remind people that if there is a difference between the breakdown and the total it is because there are times when an engagement is worded something like: 'HRH aaa visited xxx and then attended a dinner'. When this is at the one venue this is counted as one engagement but in the identification of types of engagement I am identifying both activities. An exact example of this would be Her Majesty, escorted by the Chairman, and His Royal Highness, escorted by the Principal, listened to a performance by the a capella choir in Bradenstoke Hall, viewed displays of students' project work, and met students, members of staff, governors and supporters in the Great Hall. which I count in the weekly totals as 1 engagement for each of The Queen and Philip while for the above list I register this as Performance, Viewed and Met People.

The British way of counting is most peculiar and gives a false idea.

The Princess Royal today attended Grand National Day at the Grand National Race Meeting, Aintree Racecourse, Ormskirk Road, Liverpool.

The Princess Royal, Patron, the Injured Jockeys Fund, this afternoon attended the Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration at Aintree Racecourse, Ormskirk Road, Liverpool.

The Princess Royal, President, Carers Trust, attended a Seminar to mark the Twenty First Anniversary of the Sefton Carers' Centre, Southport Theatre and Convention Centre, the Promenade, Southport, Merseyside.

Her Royal Highness, Royal Patron, Hft, this afternoon attended a Personalised Technology Conference, Liverpool Football Club, Anfield Road, Liverpool, Merseyside.

The Princess Royal, Master, the Corporation of Trinity House, later opened the Nautilus Welfare Fund Trinity House Hub, Nautilus House, Mariners' Park, Wallasey, Merseyside.

All these events happens at the same day, in the same region. The first two events even are on exactly the same location but count as two separate events!

The continental Royal Houses usually enlist it as such:

HRH Princess [name]:
Visit to Merseyside.

The effect: woooooow! Princess Anne works five times so hard than those lazy continental royals! It is however just the same visit but differently counted. When King Philippe and Queen Mathilde visited the city of Mons in Hainaut, then this was simply enlisted as "Visit to Mons". Period.

The British way of counting would result in a busy-looking five engagements:

The King and Queen were received by the Governor of Hainaut and met members of the provincial council, House of the Province, Avenue Général De Gaulle, Mons.

The King and Queen were received by the Mayor and the Aldermen of the city of Mons, City Hall, Grand Place, Mons.

The King and Queen made a walk through the city and visited the restoration works of the Collégiale Sainte-Waudru, Mons.

The King and Queen were offered a lunch at the renowned restaurant Les Gribaumonts, Rue de Havré, Mons.

The King and Queen were given a farewell ceremony at the Gare de Mons.

Not sure how it gives a false idea, Anne did 5 seperate things in the "area", with 5 different sets of people, doing 5 different things. The King and Queen did exactly the same as Anne, however the Belgium court describes it differently. I see no problem.

Also, British royals are rarely compared to their european counterparts because the British RF is so unique. You can't compare Queen Elizabeth II with Queen Mathilde, but you're supposed to as they're in the same position.

A note that the BRF has NO official way of counting things. They list events that the members of the family actually do.

People like Mr O'Donovan starting compiling counts from the detailed description that the BRF have provided.

I have followed his lead and my counting is purely MY WAY and nothing to do with the BRF at all.

I have made a decision to count this way.

If the European royals don't decide to give that sort of detail to their people that is their business. They therefore can't complain if they are compared poorly to the BRF as they choose not to give the same degree of information.

As for Anne's first two engagements being counted as two - I don't know about Mr O'Donovan but I don't count it as two engagements when they do two things at the same venue so I would count her as doing 4 things as she had to go to four places to do so.

The only time I do count multiple events in the same venue is when The Queen or the others receive different people in the same venue on the same day e.g. The Queen receives the new High Commissioner to Australia and then receives the new High Commissioner from India who hands over their letters of appointment and then later the same day has a Council meeting - all at BP. I would count that as three events. I do that because they are high profile events and often involve meeting with the formal representative either to or from another country.

I reiterate - this is MY WAY of counting the BRF engagements and NOT theirs - they have NO WAY of counting as they don't count them at all. They provide information and there are people like me who have decided to keep a record and do a count but how we count varies - e.g. Mr O'Donovan, who has been doing a count for over 30 years doesn't come up with the same figures as I do - and the DM has started doing its own count and guess what - differs to both of us as well - so three counts on the same information and three different figures.

It is no criticism. It is just the conclusion that any statistics have their own method and makes it very difficult to compare. Sadly lazy media often use statistics without controlling and then claim that royal A or royal B is "the hardest working" or that the British royals do deliver more value for money than in other monarchies (without mentioning that most royals there pursue an own career and provide in their own income).

But when Princess Anne visits the horseraces at Aintree and in between the races has a little drink-and-chat with officials from the Injured Jockeys Fund and then this is count as TWO engagements.... Any logic will say: HRH went to the races. Period. It is all very much a question of interpretation and perception. No criticism intended.

Well, am I blind or I can´t count or where is the mistake? According to data here - William made 50 engagements in April and Kate made 45 (I summarized that from weekly update) but... according to event by event (post number 92) it made only 47 for William and 42 for Kate. I guess it can be more (if you sometimes count something in total as one), but it can´t be lesser number then the whole sum... I guess there is some event which happened three times for both but is missed for both in monthly event review.. any idea?

Iluvbertie counts engagements differently as to how they are counted on the CC I believe. That maybe where the variation is coming from.

Thanks again for doing this each week Bertie. It is one of the main reasons many of us visit the forums so often. :flowers:

I am pleased to see the Cambridges doing so much at last. :)

That was only because they were on tour and even that was a light itinerary compared to what the Prince of Wales and Princess Anne do when they are overseas. It remains to be seen whether their numbers pick up long term.

Figures for William and Kate have been corrected - somehow I missed the 'other events' category when transposing the figures from one spreadsheet to the other.

Thank you again for taking the time to compile the BRF events every week. :)

If they reach 200 engagements each this year I will be satisfied with them, but next year (as long as no second pregnancy), they should be able to double this. Charles and Anne are more than twice their age and manage around 650 a year, but obviously they are more involved with a much greater number of organisations.

One thing we have to remember though and that is that its not entirely up to William and Kate how many engagements/duties they do. Its all carefully planned and executed by the Firm at the Queen's consent. For all we know, HM may think its wiser to keep the heir to the heir and his wife at a slower pace.

Types of Engagements

I would like to note that not all 'investitures' are when a member of the royal family is handing out honours but can be the royal either receiving an honour or, particularly in the case of the Duke of Kent, attends an 'investiture' for one of the organisations they represent. The Duke of Kent, as a Freemason, attends many events and that includes the Investiture of new highest office bearers in that organisation on an annual basis. The term used is sometimes 'installation' and sometimes 'investiture' depending on the type of ceremony being attended.

Weekly update to 15th May, 2014

A fairly standard week with 90 engagements and most of the family undertaking engagements.

An interesting engagement this week was HRH The Duke of Gloucester – 13th May, 2014 - The Duke of Gloucester, on behalf of The Queen, later held an Investiture at Oxford Register Office, 1 Tidmarsh Lane, Oxford. This is the first time that I have seen anyone other than Charles, William or Anne undertake an Investiture for The Queen in the UK and also the fact that it was in Oxford and not in one of the palaces (now watch me find a dozen of these sorts of events as I do the 2004-2011 count – which I am still working on but now that I am back at work have had to slow down a bit).

Anne has topped 200 this week – the first to do so this year.

Weekly update to 22nd May, 2014

An extremely busy week with 183 engagements done in total. That isn’t surprising when you realise that Charles and Camilla were on an overseas tour as was both Harry and Andrew and Edward and Sophie were doing their week in Scotland where Edward hold the position of Lord High Commissioner of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland – a position each of his older siblings have all held as well.

Forgot to add my thanks to Cepe for the information on the 21st May which the British Monarchy website didn't update this week - and it was the busiest day so far this year with a Garden Party, Charles doing 11 engagements and Camilla 7 in Canada and Edward and Sophie quite busy in Scotland.

May I have confirmation the Monday 26th May was a Public Holiday in the UK? I have read that is was a Bank Holiday but I am not sure if that means everyone has the day off or if it is like our Bank Holiday - where only the Banks have the day off.

:previous: Yes, it was the Spring Bank Holiday, which would explain why there were no royal engagements yesterday. :flowers:

there was no court circular for Monday 26th

The CC from 23rd - 25th is normally updated on a Tuesday Sydney time but it wasn't so I wanted to check. If the Monday was a Public holiday then the earliest the 23rd onwards would be updated would be Wednesday Sydney time. I will check when I get a chance later today but given the erratic nature of the updates this year I am not going to hold my breath.

So far there are entire weeks where there has been no update at all but thanks to Cepe who has access via The Times I am able to get the figures.

Prince Charles had an engagement on 24th. This is from the Times

Clarence House

24th May, 2014
The Prince of Wales, Patron, Music in Country Churches, this evening attended a Concert in the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Northleach, and was received by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Gloucestershire (Dame Janet Trotter).

Weekly update to 29th May, 2014

I am sure that this week is not accurate because the British Monarchy website is saying that there were 'no results' for the 29th May - the day that William and Kate were in Scotland. That means either what they did there weren't official engagements or that the CC hasn't been updated, which is nothing unusual this year. It has definitely failed to update on a number of occasions - but when they fail to do so for a weekday like this is usually means it will never be updated on there.

Other days this week with no engagements are: 23rd, 25th and 26th (so officially only 3 days on which any engagements were carried out this week.
