Weekly update to 21st August, 2014

As I said yesterday, the CC has only two things in the last week, from the 15th - 21st August - the Divine Service and Princess Anne's birthday. Neither of these are official engagements in my count and so this week is the very rare 'no change' for all members of the family.

And before anyone mentions Beatrice and her opening at the hospital - she simply doesn't count as her events aren't listed in the CC.

HM The Queen - 345 (345 – no change)
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh - 223 (223 – no change)
HRH The Prince of Wales - 369 (369 – no change)
HRH The Duchess of Cornwall - 158 (158 – no change)
HRH The Duke of Cambridge - 102 (102 – no change)
HRH The Duchess of Cambridge – 78 (78 – no change)
HRH Prince Henry of Wales - 66 (66 – no change)
HRH The Duke of York – 218 (218 – no change)
HRH Princess Beatrice of York - 3 (3 – no change)
HRH Princess Eugenie of York - 2 (2 – no change)
HRH The Earl of Wessex - 264 (264 – no change)
HRH The Countess of Wessex - 228 (228 – no change)
HRH The Princess Royal - 315 (315 – no change)
Vice-Admiral Tim Laurence - 50 (50 – no change)
HRH The Duke of Gloucester - 162 (162 – no change)
HRH The Duchess of Gloucester - 97 (97 – no change)
HRH The Duke of Kent – 124 (124 – no change)
HRH The Duchess of Kent - 0 (0 - no change)
HRH Prince Michael of Kent – 6 (6 – no change)
HRH Princess Michael of Kent - 5 (5 – no change)
HRH Princess Alexandra - 54 (54 – no change)

I think that some of Henry's engagements do not count as well

The things that don't count for Harry are things like charity polo matches - but they don't count for anyone.

If Harry opened something like a hospital equipment then it would count.

I think some of the "fun" engagements for anyone don't count, and if memory serves some of the working engagements for the royals who don't want to be working royals (The Michaels, Eugenie, and the Duchess of Kent come to mind, but I hope Bertie will correct me if I'm wrong on this).

The thing about Beatrice is she seems to want to be a working royal and yet doesn't get credit for the real work stuff she does most of the time. That makes me feel bad for her.

The Michael's of Kent also don't count - e.g. Michael was at the Chelsea Hospital for the commemorations of WWI but that wasn't counted as an official engagement for him - while everyone else who went somewhere was credited in the CC.

The Duchess of Kent only attends a couple of events with her husband these days - and this year has done nothing official at all. If she did do something she would probably get the credit as she used to do so before she asked to retire from official public life.

Iluvbertie: I was waiting for someone to mention this - Polo. For some reason (who knows, it was months ago) I was looking at archived CC's during the time when the POW and PD were married and together. Anyway, I was amazed at the number of polo matches for the POW in the CC at that time.
I promise to go and try to find that info again - because it was striking. But don't trust my word until I find it. I love a good reason to research.

This year Charles has had one polo event count while all the other polo games have been personal events, even if for charity. In the past I think Charles did more polo appearances and so they counted more but William and Harry's polo games don't.

I wonder if that's a ratio thing...

If you get 600 engagements done, you're allowed to take credit for a few polo matches, but if your numbers are less you don't. The more "work" things you do the more official "fun" things you get to do.

I don't think so considering that 'white-water rafting' and 'wine-tasting' were both counted for William and Kate in NZ - both fun things and they aren't actually setting the world alight with the number of engagements.

True, but that could because it was an official tour.

There is also the fact that William is in a bit of a cushy position - his numbers are expected to be higher than other part time royals due to his position in the succession, so if he wants to do more "fun" engagements and less "work" ones he's more likely to get credit for them than Harry or Beatrice.

It would be interesting to break down the ratio of "fun" to "work" for different royals.

If I get time during the Christmas break later this year - and someone reminds me I will try to do that 'fluff vs serious'.

You might, on a personal basis, define them as fun, but they were chosen by the Australian Government as part of the tour. they reflected aspects of Australia that might attract tourists. and there are figures available that they have.

We can over analyse this. royal events are not for the fun of the royals and it is a mistake to promote that. They are to promote places, charities and activities which will be beneficial.

Thatdoeant mean they are not enjoyable for the royals taking part, but it does demean the purpose.

Why do posters on this forum persist on putting a negative aspect on the owrk of any royal family, but particularly the BRF?

Those events were in New Zealand.

They could still have done them without them being listed as official engagements.

In Australia the engagements were more serious rather than frivolous things like white-water rafting or yacht racing.

Things like that aren't always counted as official engagements - that is the point - regardless of where they are e.g. Harry, last year played polo in Africa for charity but no official recognition while William and Kate race each other on Auckland harbour and it an official engagement.

Eugenie presents a Paralympic medal with no recognition in the CC while Kate does the same thing and it is an official engagement.

There is no rhyme or reason why one thing counts for one royal but something similar for another royal doesn't count.

As far as feeling for Beatrice and her work not being "counted"....

To be honest, to me, I think it speaks far more favorably to Beatrice's character as a person when she is given press coverage for the charitable things she does on her own. I sincerely think she is doing these things because she wants to be doing them. Not because she's trying to worm her way into a role with the Firm or because she has been told she needs to do this or she has clothes she wants to show off or any of numerous reasons that could be invented. She is giving of herself freely and that is admirable in my book.

Weekly update to 21st August, 2014

Another very, very slow week with one engagement only - for Camilla who carried out a visit on the 28th August. So again I am only doing a limited update as most figures haven't changed and the percentage change will be updated again next week - when many of the family resume work after their August break.

Weekly update to 4th September August, 2014.

There are now signs that the holidays are coming to an end for many of the royals as most of them carried out at least one official engagement during this past week. Those who didn’t were The Queen, Philip, Camilla, William, Kate, Harry and the Duke of Kent of those who are mentioned individually in the CC and, of course Beatrice, Eugenie, Tim, Michael and Marie-Christine who only get mentioned when accompanying some other royal.

HM The Queen - 345 (345 – no change)
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh - 223 (223 – no change)
HRH The Prince of Wales - 373 (369 – up 4)
HRH The Duchess of Cornwall - 159 (159 – no change)
HRH The Duke of Cambridge - 102 (102 – no change)
HRH The Duchess of Cambridge – 78 (78 – no change)
HRH Prince Henry of Wales - 66 (66 – no change)
HRH The Duke of York – 219 (218 – up 1)
HRH Princess Beatrice of York - 3 (3 – no change)
HRH Princess Eugenie of York - 2 (2 – no change)
HRH The Earl of Wessex - 266 (264 – up 2)
HRH The Countess of Wessex - 229 (228 – up 1)
HRH The Princess Royal - 319 (315 – up 4)
Vice-Admiral Tim Laurence - 50 (50 – no change)
HRH The Duke of Gloucester - 164 (162 – up 2)
HRH The Duchess of Gloucester - 99 (97 – up 2)
HRH The Duke of Kent – 124 (124 – no change)
HRH The Duchess of Kent - 0 (0 - no change)
HRH Prince Michael of Kent – 6 (6 – no change)
HRH Princess Michael of Kent - 5 (5 – no change)
HRH Princess Alexandra - 55 (54 – up 1)

The 'league table'

HRH The Prince of Wales - 373
HM The Queen – 345

HRH The Princess Royal - 319
HRH The Earl of Wessex – 266
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh – 229
HRH The Countess of Wessex – 228
HRH The Duke of York – 219
HRH The Duke of Gloucester - 164
HRH The Duchess of Cornwall - 159
HRH The Duke of Kent – 124

HRH The Duke of Cambridge – 102
HRH The Duchess of Gloucester – 99
HRH The Duchess of Cambridge – 78
HRH Prince Henry of Wales - 66
HRH Princess Alexandra - 55
Vice-Admiral Tim Laurence – 50
HRH Prince Michael of Kent – 6
HRH Princess Michael of Kent – 5

HRH Princess Beatrice of York – 3
HRH Princess Eugenie of York - 2
HRH The Duchess of Kent – 0

Year to date total - 2888 (2871 - up 17)

75.6% of those engagements being carried out by The Queen, her children and their spouses.
46.6% done by the main line (The Queen, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Duke of Cambridge, Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry)
19.7% of all engagements are being done by those over 85.
26.9% done by those 70 and above*
64.9% are being done by those over 60.
40.5% were done by those in their 60s*
11.9% have been done by The Queen.
12.9% were done by Charles.
5.5% were done by Camilla
53.8% were done by those over retirement age
11.0% were done by Anne

* I haven’t adjusted the calculations to take into account the fact that HRH The Duke of Gloucester is now out of his 60s and thus needs to have his figures included in the ’70 and above’ and not in the ‘in their 60s’. If I am able to work out how to adjust the calculations in my spreadsheet I will let you know or else leave it like it is until next year (this is a good excuse to work on my excel spreadsheet skills but I also have a lot of marking to do as we are coming to the end of our Year 11 and Year 12s school year – Year 12s end on the 19th September with their external exams in October so many are giving me practice essays to mark and the Year 11s finish their Year 11 course on the same day to start their final year next term. Other years don’t finish their yearly studies until the end of the year. NSW does things in a funny way when you read it like that but it works for us.)

Days on which official engagements were undertaken to 4th September, 2014

HM The Queen - 105
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh - 95
HRH The Prince of Wales - 120
HRH The Duchess of Cornwall - 70
HRH The Duke of Cambridge - 48
HRH The Duchess of Cambridge - 34
HRH Prince Henry of Wales - 36
HRH The Duke of York - 86
HRH Princess Beatrice of York - 3
HRH Princess Eugenie of York - 2
HRH The Earl of Wessex - 99
HRH The Countess of Wessex - 87
HRH The Princess Royal - 119
Vice-Admiral Tim Laurence - 30
HRH The Duke of Gloucester - 82
HRH The Duchess of Gloucester - 61
HRH The Duke of Kent - 79
HRH The Duchess of Kent - 0
HRH Prince Michael of Kent - 6
HRH Princess Michael of Kent - 5
