This is the final entry for 2013 and at the end I will analyse the difference between my figures and Mr O'Donovan's. I believe that this comes about simply because there are times when I count something as two when he counts it as one. My simple rule is - if they move venue it is two, or if a couple attend on the senior royal does something the other doesn't then they counts extra for the royal who does something e.g. The Queen and Phillip visit xxxx, tour xxxx, have luncheon at xxxx and The Queen opens the new wing. I count that as two to The Queen and one to Philip as The Queen has done something extra but if it reads 'The Queen accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh then opened the new wing' it is only 1 for both.
It should also be noted that I keep a count for Beatrice, Eugenie, Tim, Katherine, Michael and Marie-Christine which adds figures to my final total.

HM The Queen - 394 (394 - no change)
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh - 203 (203 - no change)
HRH The Prince of Wales - 590 (589 - up 1)
HRH The Duchess of Cornwall - 263 (263 - no change)
HRH The Duke of Cambridge - 66 (66 - no change)
HRH The Duchess of Cambridge - 44 (44 - no change)
HRH Prince Henry of Wales - 57 (57 - no change)
HRH The Duke of York - 366 (366 - no change)
HRH Princess Beatrice of York - 9 (9 - no change)
HRH Princess Eugenie of York - 5 (5 - no change)
HRH The Earl of Wessex - 338 (338 - no change)
HRH The Countess of Wessex - 234 (233 - no change)
HRH The Princess Royal - 477 (477 - no change)
Vice-Admiral Tim Laurence - 32 (32 - no change)
HRH The Duke of Gloucester - 222 (222 - no change)
HRH The Duchess of Gloucester - 140 (140 - no change)
HRH The Duke of Kent - 206 (206 - no change)
HRH The Duchess of Kent - 2 (2 - no change)
HRH Prince Michael of Kent – 7 (7 - no change)
HRH Princess Michael of Kent - 6 (6 - no change)
HRH Princess Alexandra - 26 (26 - no change)

Order from most downwards - the 'league table' if you like. I refuse to calculate how people are moving up or down that list. I do move people around who have moved up or down but I am not putting in how many places they are moving - although usually it is only one place in either direction.

That's for your hard work. Please keep it up next year.

FYI,
Is this a typo or just a copy from the 27th?

HRH The Prince of Wales - 590 (589 - up 1)
Year to date total - 3687 (3687 - no change)

Thanks

Typo - there have been no official engagements, other than Divine Service, since the 20th December when Charles visited the Cotswold Care Hospice in Gloucestershire. There was Divine Service on both the 25th and 29th December.

I don't count 'Divine Service' because there is no list of which royals actually attended that service and it is a normal weekly event. Just because the media report that xxxx member of the family attended doesn't mean that they give a comprehensive listing and so no list in the CC = no engagement by me.

2013 vs. 2011 (O'Donovan's list)

-146 Phillip (due to illness)
-125 Andrew
-114 Anne
-090 Alexandra (due to illness)
-064 Charles
-029 Edward
-029 Richard
-028 William
-026 Queen (due to illness)
-023 Birgitte
-013 Edward DoK (due to illness)
-004 Camilla
+037 Sophie
+036 Harry
+010 Catherine

The Telegraph's sub-headline is misleading.
Duchess of Cambridge's maternity leave contributes to 25 per cent reduction in royal family's engagements.

It is due to illness for the over 70 and a general reduction for all except Sophie. Catherine's & Harry's numbers are misleading as in 2010 Harry completed 52 vs 53 in 2013 and Catherine did not have a full year in 2011 as she had not married into the RF until April.

Sophie numbers are probably on an increase as her children are now school age.

The significant drop for Andrew, Anne and even Charles can not be explain readily.

Princess Anne probably wants to stay home with the grandkids. She did say it was hard to do royal engagements when there were so many things going on at home.

Prince Charles might be taking over some of his mother's behind the scene duties that don't appear in the CC.

Anyone has any ideas in ref. to Andrew's reduction in royal duties?

He might have performed less overseas tours?
(Sophie tied with Charles at 95, followed by Edward at 87..)

I can try and give a practical reason. Charitable Organisations and Businesses spent money, time and effort on the Jubilee Year, and then they spend time recouping. Last year was recoup year IMO.

They dont just decide on visits - they get requests. If requests were down then this all makes sense. And the reason is financial, not a fall in their popularity.

Just an idea

I can understand why those who've been ill/pregnant did less engagements, I can see why Anne appears to be doing less as she is now 63 with young grandchildren (i know her parents work hard and are much older but she does work very hard so I can understand why she is possibly reducing how much she does).
I am though a little surprised by Andrew doing so much less (the same for Edward but he did only do a few less) - maybe its because he dropped being ambassador for trade & investment in 2011. It just seems a bit of a surprise when all the talk is about people needing to step up to do more as HM and DoE get older.

Of course it might not be a deliberate decision and just one of those things that there are less things to do or that actually the things they have done this year have taken more prep time or time to carry out. It would be interesting to compare days worked from 2011 to this year - maybe that hasn't gone down.

His giving up the Trade Envoy position would have a major impact as he has to build a different role for himself. When he first gave up the position it was stated that he would honour all agreed engagements - some of which were planned a year in advance - taking him well into 2012 where he also had to deal with the Jubilee engagements so 2013 is when the loss of that role is impacting his figures. Time will tell whether or not he will be able to increase his numbers again.

Sophie will definitely increase her numbers as her children get older. She does significantly more now than when Louise and James were toddlers and younger.

Andrew's is perhaps less now that he isn't the Ambassador for trade anymore...?
