When they are listed they are either taking part in events at the invitation of the Queen or undertakinging events on her behalf. Even if she only asks someone once in a year to do something for her, they are acting on her behalf and therefore should be reported in the CC.

If you look at the list of royals on the list of the CC there are some who aren't there but who do get a mention and that is why I include them and always will.

It wouldn't matter if they removed the Duchess of Kent or Princess Alexandra from the list of members of the royal family - putting them in the same category as Beatrice, Eugenie and Prince and Princess Micheal of Kent - as they would still be mentioned in the CC on occasions.

The reason that they are there is so that people can actually do individual searches for them, which can't be one for Beatrice and Eugenie, Michael or Marie-Christine - both for the past or in the future.

Alexandra hasn't been doing anything this year due to ill health but there are reports that she will return to duty later this year and if so I would expect her to do quite a lot if well enough - she was over 100 last year.

Weekly update to 8th August

The slowest week of the year - only 16 engagements all week - as the family definitely are on holidays. Interestingly the Future Engagements area of the Monarchy website has 8 engagements total for the rest of the month - 1 by Philip and 7 for Edward and Charles website has none, zero, nadda for himself and Camilla to the end of September. I am sure that that won't be correct but we have to wait and see. Last year was an abboration with the Olympics and Paralympics at this time to boost numbers.

HM The Queen - 246 (245 - up 1)
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh - 117 (117 - no change)
HRH The Prince of Wales - 397 (394 - up 3)

Weekly update to 23rd August

The slowest week of the year so far with 2 engagements in total, both done by Edward, and the Future Engagements section of the monarchy website indicates 1 engagment for the rest of August - by Edward. Things look like picking up again in September with 9 pages of engagments listed - but I find that the site won't let you actually move to pages other than the first one - I click on the '2' at the bottom of the page to go to the next page and nothing happens.

Obvious question I know but have you tried clicking next? I've found that the scroll bar must be at the bottom of the page for it to work. I've managed to see all of September which is how I found out DoE is doing something at Sandriingham on 30th September.

I have tried clicking 'next' and page numbers but nothing - just doesn't move onto the next page - ever. It did last year but hasn't worked this year.

All I was trying to do was see how much things were going to pick up in September and the first page of September does enough to show things picking then. Interesting Charles site says that neither he nor Camilla will be doing anything for the rest of the year (someone hasn't updated the diary on his site).

Livens up a bit

Princess Royal 22
E of Wessex 21
C of wessex 6
D of Kent 8
P Alexandra 1

D of Glos 10
Dss of Glos 7
Glos together 3

DoE 1

I know we talk about the younger ones taking on more but it seems to me some of the slack is being taken up by the Gloucesters.

Thanks - the Gloucesters have always been 'quiet' workers and they are the same ages as Charles, Camilla and Anne so there is room for them to take on a bit more if necessary allowing William and Kate more time to be parents and learning the ropes of being frontline royals.

It's not just you, Iluvbertie. The site is twitchy at times. I've had it not page down, not scroll, not fit the text properly, return odd search results (someone shows up in the all family choice, but not when you search on them alone). I've also had it return results not in the time period I ask for. And this seems to happen randomly. Odd.

A very good point - I always think of the Gloucesters (and Kents) as being the Queen's age but they are fairly young.

The Gloucesters and Kents are the same generation as The Queen - grandchildren of George V.

Elizabeth - born 21st April 1926
Edward - born 9th October 1935 - 9 years, 5 months and 18 days later
Alexandra - born 25th December 1936 - 10 years, 8 months and 4 days later
Michael - born 4th July, 1942 - 16 years, 2 months and 13 days later
Richard - born 26th August, 1944 - 18 years, 4 months and 5 days later

Her nearest 'royal' family cousins were the Harewoods -

George - born 7th February, 1923 - 3 years, 2 months and 14 days older than Elizabeth
Gerald - born 21st August, 1924 - 1 year, 8 months older than Elizabeth.

Both of these cousins have now passed away - as has the elder of her Gloucester cousins, William.

Thanks for your regular updates on the family's engagements. I cannot believe how many engagements Charles carries out, it's crazy!

Back in May I did a calculation of which royal houses are used for official engagements by the entire family and though an update to 12th September would be in order.

The type of engagement update will be done in early October when I am on school holidays - but as I had to do a 'rebuild' earlier this year it will be out a bit from the last update I did.

BPQ (Buckingham Palace done by The Queen) - 124
BP (done by others) - 184
CH - 130
St James - 59
KP - 30
Windsor - 23
Marlborough House - 3
Sandringham House - 10
Holyrood House - 16
Balmoral - 1

Just a reminder that this is the number of 'events' as opposed to 'engagements'. So if two or more royals attended the event it is only counted once even though up to 19 royals may have attended the event. e.g. 11th September there was the Mosaic International Leadership Programme Reception at Clarence House attended by Charles, Camilla and Andrew. In the 'engagements thread' that is 1 engagement for each royal who attended but in this list it is 1 use of CH even though 3 royals attended.

Weekly update to 19th September

It seems as if the family are stepping out again but there are still some not doing much such as Charles and Camilla. Andrew and Sophie are both overseas with Andrew doing up to 7 a day while Sophie is on about 2 - 3 a day. Not really significant as her engagements could easily be longer than Andrew's. The Queen has done her first engagement since 8th August.

A lot of people may have seen reference to Beatrice undertaking an engagement on the 19th September, which she did, but HM The Queen didn't regard this as a 'royal duty' as she didn't authorise it being mentioned in the CC. This is normal for the York girls - all their charity work is done as private individuals not as representatives of The Queen.

HM The Queen - 247 (246 - up 1)
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh - 118 (118 - no change)
HRH The Prince of Wales - 417 (416 - up 1)
HRH The Duchess of Cornwall - 189 (189 - no change)
HRH The Duke of Cambridge - 27 (27 - no change)
HRH The Duchess of Cambridge - 30 (30 - no change)
HRH Prince Henry of Wales - 43 (43 - no change)
HRH The Duke of York - 250 (235 - up 15)
HRH Princess Beatrice of York - 7 (7 - no change)
HRH Princess Eugenie of York - 5 (5 - no change)
HRH The Earl of Wessex - 234 (217 - up 17)
HRH The Countess of Wessex - 164 (159 - up 5)
HRH The Princess Royal - 318 (312 - up 6)
Vice-Admiral Tim Lawrence - 23 (23 - no change)
HRH The Duke of Gloucester - 154 (150 - up 4)
HRH The Duchess of Gloucester - 85 (77 - up 8)
HRH The Duke of Kent - 147 (147 - no change)

Alexandra is still on sick leave but expected back on the 21st should register her first engagement next week, unless she had to cancel at the last minute and I haven't seen anything to suggest that yet. I also haven't seen any reports of her doing the engagements either so...
