Order from most downwards - the 'league table' if you like. I refuse to calculate how people are moving up or down that list. I do move people around who have moved up or down but I am not putting in how many places they are moving - although usually it is only one place in either direction.

HRH The Prince of Wales - 505
HM The Queen – 455
HRH The Princess Royal - 435
HRH The Earl of Wessex - 375
HRH The Duke of York - 374

Year to date total - 4056 with 74.5% of those engagements being carried out by The Queen, her children and their spouses. The remaining 25.5% have been done by her grandchildren, first cousins and their spouses. This sees a slight drop since last week as the Dukes of Gloucester and Kent have been relatively busy while the more senior royals have only just started back from their two month summer holidays.

The main line (The Queen, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Duke of Cambridge, Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry) has dropped to 44%.

19% of all engagements are being done by those over 85 - The Queen and Philip which is a slight decline over the last week.

24% are done by those 70 and above (The Queen, Philip, The Duke of Kent, Prince Michael of Kent and Princess Alexandra) which is also down from last week.

66.6% are being done by those over 60 - meaning that 40.4% of all engagements so far this year have been carried out by Charles, Camilla, Anne, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Micheal (the ones in their 60s).

Re: October 10 week

This was a tough week for the Royal travel office with a number of unanticipated trips from North to South. Despite all the grousing about cost, it makes me realize the value of the royal helicopter more than ever.;)

Charles replacing The Queen at the investiture isn't in this list yet - as it was on Friday.

The problem with Fridays (and why I go from Thursday to Thursday) is that the CC for Friday's isn't published until Monday in the UK (which is Tuesdayish more often then not for me in OZ).

Weekly update to 18th October

This week the senior royals were definitely back in the saddle with everyone basically doing something - even Beatrice and Eugenie were in the CC this week attending the Jubilee Reception.

Year to date total - 4152 with 75% of those engagements being carried out by The Queen, her children and their spouses. The remaining 25.% have been done by her grandchildren, first cousins and their spouses. This sees a slight increase since last week as the more senior royals have returned to business after their summer break.

The main line (The Queen, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Duke of Cambridge, Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry) has remained steady at 44%.

19% of all engagements are being done by those over 85 - The Queen and Philip which has remained steady over the last week.

27% are done by those 70 and above (The Queen, Philip, The Duke of Kent, Prince Michael of Kent and Princess Alexandra) which is up from last week probably because the Queen and Philip have been out and about again.

67% are being done by those over 60 - meaning that 40% of all engagements so far this year have been carried out by Charles, Camilla, Anne, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Micheal (the ones in their 60s).

To put this into fractions - approximately 1/5 of all engagements are done by The Queen and Philip, over 1/4 by those over 70 and 2/3rds by those over 60.

Charles alone is doing 12.5% or 1/8 of all engagements.

Weekly update to 1st November

Another interesting week. One engagment struck me - 'The Queen, Duke of Lancaster and The Duke of Edinburgh this morning attended a Service of Dedication for the Diamond Jubilee Window in The Queen's Chapel of the Savoy, Savoy Hill, London WC2' - as we don't often see her referred to as Duke of Lancaster.

Some quite busy royals while others has a restful week.

A busy week, especially for Charles and Camilla, with 115 engagements this week and 62 of these were done by Charles and Camilla on their tour. I don't know how many people are aware that the Duke of Kent is doing a tour as well at the moment to the South Atlantic?

Weekly update to 22nd November

A busy week for some, including The Queen and Philip and the Wessexes. Charles and Camilla slowed down after their tour. The interesting one for me is that Andrew has done only 5 things in November, including the Remembrance Day ceremonies and has nothing planned for the rest of the year according to the Future Events calendar whereas Edward has 5 planned for December. Anne, as always, has been going about her role as normal and The Duke of Kent had a full raft of engagements in The Falklands.

Weekly update to 6th December

The Queen had one very busy day this week where she had 9 engagements - 2 audiences, received individually another 5 people and then attended a gala concert and presented a medal - now some would say that attending the concert and presenting the medal should be one engagement but lots of royals simply attend gala concert and don't do anything else - hence the reason I counted it as two.

Weekly update to 13th December

Big problem this week - according to the CC there were NO engagements carried out by any members of the BRF on the 12th or 13th December yet from reading reports and this site I know that Charles and Camilla were out and about - Charles doing an investiture etc. It also appears that The Queen and Philip were also doing things but...I only have access to the CC from the British monarchy website and as that hasn't been updated I can't include any figures for these two days. This has happened before when the dates were scrambled but another source I had then put the details online from The Times - had a printed copy and typed them up - no luck like that this time.

Another note - last week William according to the CC William attended the Military Tournament but the DM, and other papers, reported that he had pulled out. As The Queen has to approve what is published in the CC it seems strange that she would approve notice going out that William carried out a duty when the press could clearly report that he hadn't carried out that duty. As the duty was reported in the CC it has remained in the count.

That makes 40 engagements across two days - an average of 2 per royal but as we know a number of those on the list aren't working royalsfor one reason or another - Harry (in Afghanistan), Beatrice and Eugenie (not wanted), Duchess of Kent (no longer interested), Prince and Princess Michael (never needed) and then you take out Kate (ill - pregnant) and those 40 engagements were carried out by 13 people at an average of 3 per day - of course The Queen and Charles did a larger percentage of those engagements but the average is still very good for The Firm.

Again - thanks Cepe for making an up-to-date count possible.

For anyone interested in statistics - Charles is doing 13+% and The Queen 11+% of all the engagments meaning that a quarter of all engagements are being carried out by the monarch and the heir.

NP Iluvbertie - happy to help at any time. I subscribe to Times so let me know if I can help. I think what you do is amazing and thank you.

Iluvbertie, I'm also a Times subscriber and if cepe is unavailable I'm happy to help also.

Only a couple of weeks until Mr O'Donovan writes to the Times with his tally of royal engagements for the year. It'll be interesting to see if there's any difference when compared with Iluvbertie's meticulously compiled list.

Iluvbertie, do you intend to undertake the same exercise for 2013? Your weekly updates are very much appreciated.

I will see how far off I am first - if I am reasonably close I will continue but if I am way off I will have to sit down and try and analyse why?

Based on last year's figures I don't think I am too far off - but I will wait and see.

I was also thinking of adding a few extra bits - e.g. a count of when a spouse simply accompanies the royal rather than is actively involved - and add a column for Tim.

What is would look like would be something like Philip 106 (100 - up 6) - 45 accompanied Queen - so it would still show that he was up to 106 engagements, had done 6 in the previous week but of those 106 he did 45 in the company of The Queen and not as the main royal on the engagement - just some extra information to help see the work they do.

If I knew how I would even think about doing a poll to find out if people wanted me to continue doing this.

^Absolutely. This is one of my favorite things on this entire forum. It's always very interesting and informative to read this each weekend.

Add my yes vote to the list. This thread is very precise and informative and one of the bigger assets of TRF for the British Royals.

Yes please Bertie. Always enjoy this thread and I'd love to see it continue next year.

I echo everyone else, I'd love to see this thread continue, if Iluvbertie is happy to do so.

It seems only yesterday that Iluvbertie was starting her tally, it's pretty scary to think that's another year gone.

Weekly update to 20th December

Clearly slowing down for the Christmas/New Year break. Siome may query why Eugenie's count hasn't changed despite attending the opening of the TCT wing of the hospital and going to the other hospital - simple - these weren't official engagements but private ones and so not recorded in the CC - just like when she presented medals at the Paralympics - no mention in the CC for her.

Weekly update to 27th December

A very, very quiet week with ONE engagement done in total - Charles.

I know they all attended church and the CC says 'Divine Service' for both the 23rd and 25th December but no names are listed as attending so no one given an engagement for either of those services.

I suspect these will be my final figures as well but who knows - something might happen to lead to a new engagement somewhere.

Thanks Iluvbertie, hope you continue next year.

All increased their workload during this busy year except:
Princess Anne (-5), Prince Andrew (-3) and Princess Alexandra (-9) and Duchess of Gloucester (-4).

Until I see Mr O'Donovan's figures in this upcoming week I won't commit to saying someone increased/decreased their work but I am not surprised that most increased their load due to the Jubilee and the Olympics.

I will continue this next year I think because it seems that about 200 people read it even if most never comment.

My idea though is to add in a column where the partner of the royal who is listed as accompanying (or multiple royals accompany a major royal) that will also be recorded e.g. The Queen accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh opened xxxx will be counted by me as 1 for each of the couple but an extra column showing that Philip was 'accompanying' - just to show the count more realistically I think as that will allow us to see how often the spouses, in particular, are 'making up the numbers' as opposed to being the focus of the engagement. I am also including a column for Tim, although all his engagements this year were ones where he accompanied Anne but I think that if Philip, Camilla, Kate, Sophie, Birgitte, Katherine and Marie-Christine get credit for doing this with their partners then Tim should as well. However his figures won't count in the total as he doesn't do any individual engagements.

If anyone has some suggestions for what else, if anything, they would like please let me know and I will consider the feasibility, considering I have a full-time job.

Well, the Times now puts its editions online as early as 8pm the night before, as is the case for 1/1/13. I'm stuck inside on NYE with a bloody annoying chest infection, so here are Mr O'Donovan's letter to the editor and a tallying up of the overall number of engagements (which Mr O'D doesn't actually do, he just lists UK visits and overseas visits separately):

Sir, I have carried out a survey of the official engagements undertaken by the Royal Family during 2012 as reported in the Court Circular.

During this busy Diamond Jubilee year The Queen carried out 100 and Prince Philip 40 more engagements in the UK compared with 2011.

Prince Henry undertook 61 official engagements, of which 34 were overseas, prior to leaving for Afghanistan on September 8 to serve as an Apache helicopter pilot.

The Earl and Countess of Wessex were particularly busy representing The Queen on Jubilee visits overseas.

The Princess Royal was the busiest member of the Royal Family out and about, away from the “office”, with engagements spread over the UK. Among her overseas tours was a visit to our forces in Afghanistan.

I should again emphasise that the above table of figures should not be converted into a “league table” of individual royal performance. All engagements differ as to time and content and there is also the time taken in preparation, whether it be a visit, investiture or speech.

Except for Christmas Day and Easter Day, the Queen never has a day off from the official red boxes which pursue her everywhere.

Tim O’Donovan
Datchet, Berks
Here is the link for the letter at The Times website - The Royal Family (paywalled)

Total engagements, both in the UK and abroad, during 2012

The Queen - 425
Duke of Edinburgh - 325
Prince of Wales - 592
Duchess of Cornwall - 276
Duke of Cambridge - 88
Duchess of Cambridge - 111
Prince Harry - 61
Duke of York - 436
Earl of Wessex - 431
Countess of Wessex - 324
Princess Royal - 566
Duke of Gloucester - 337
Duchess of Gloucester - 146
Duke of Kent - 239
Princess Alexandra - 110

I make the total to be, for the BRF as a whole - 4,406 engagements in 2012.

At first glance, Iluvbertie, it would appear that Mr O'D is slightly understating things here. I doubt very much that he's been so meticulous as you have with his figures.

Thank EIIR.

I had to go to bed before those figures were up - about 2.00 a.m. here and of course they were up then before I rose on New Year's Day.

Harry New Year everyone.

A comparison with my figures follows:

Mr O'Donovan's figures are in brackets. Note that he doesn't include some people that I do because they were in the CC.

I find it interesting that I was over on most royals but under for Anne and Alexandra - I thought I was consistent with what I counted and so would have expected to be either over or under for all of them but...

HRH The Duchess of Gloucester - 151 (146) - I am over by - 5
HRH The Duke of Kent - 249 (239) - I am over by - 10
HRH The Duchess of Kent - 8 (0) - I am over by - 8
HRH Prince Michael of Kent – 23 (0) - I am over by - 23
HRH Princess Michael of Kent - 21 (0) - I am over by - 21
HRH Princess Alexandra - 107 (110) - I am under by - 3

There were three days earlier in the year when there was nothing in the CC on the British monarchy website as it was all gobbledy-gook which may mean that on those three days Anne and Alexandra did things I missed (that was before I realised I could PM some people for the information).

My total includes the engagments done by those Mr O'Donovan hasn't included at all - Beatrice, Eugenie, The Duchess of Kent, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent - total by me of 88.

I will continue to count them my way but now I know that Mr O'Donovan and I do count things slightly differently. My count will be higher therefore than his. I think some of the difference is that I count as two engagments when a royal visits a place and then opens something, particularly if they are accompanied by their partner who simply visits the place. That would be especially true for The Queen and Charles.

I am surprised that he has Andrew with more than Edward as I had them the other way round but not by much between the brothers.

I have read somewhere that he doesn't include things like Ascot - I do because it was in the CC - anything in the CC, other than leaving for and arriving home from a tour, I count. The other thing I don't count is 'Divine Service' - such as 23rd, 25th and 30th December - but do count things like a 'Thanksgiving Service' and the Jubilee Church Service. If Ascot isn't counted that is immediately 5 off The Queen and Philip's and I suppose if he doesn't count Ascot he wouldn't count Henley so there is another 1 off both of them.

I am over by 611 but of those 88 were done by the people he didn't include so I was over by 523.

I will see how I go next year but will also be including Tim as he also does accompany Anne on occasions and should be credited publicly with those occasions.

I know that some people like to see the figures in order from most downwards so using Mr O'Donovan's figures in brackets here is the final for the year. Those in italics are where we have them in a different position. Again, his figures are in bold and brackets.

HRH The Prince of Wales - 681 (592)
HRH The Princess Royal - 563 (566)
HRH The Duke of York - 452 (436)
HRH The Earl of Wessex - 454 (431)
HM The Queen – 578 (425)
HRH The Duke of Gloucester - 352 (337)
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh – 404 (325)
HRH The Countess of Wessex - 360 (324)
HRH The Duchess of Cornwall - 339 (276)
HRH The Duke of Kent - 249 (239)
HRH The Duchess of Gloucester - 151 (146)
HRH The Duchess of Cambridge - 124 (111)
HRH Princess Alexandra - 107 (110)
HRH The Duke of Cambridge - 96 (88)
HRH Prince Henry of Wales - 71 (61)
HRH Princess Beatrice of York – 20 (0)
HRH Princess Eugenie of York - 16 (0)
HRH The Duchess of Kent - 8 (0)
HRH Prince Michael of Kent – 23 (0)
HRH Princess Michael of Kent -21 (0)

The list at the bottom is in italics because Mr O'Donovan has them all at 0 while I had them with different figures and so I have changed them into the order I have them on my tables.

Thank you Iluvbertie for all that you do!

There is one typo... "HRH The Duchess of Kent - 8 (0) - I am over by - 18 " is it 8 or 18?
