Royalty of Malaysia current events part 3: April 2015 -

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
It would be interesring yo know which law the former king was breaking... and whether that same breach still applies if he is no longer king (but still sultan).

Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar receive the visit of Johor Women and Tourism Development Committee Chairman, YB Liow Cai Tung at the Mados Office, Istana Bukit Pelangi, Johor Bahru on 9 January. Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang has abdicated and his son Tengku Abdullah, is the next Sultan of Pahang and he sworn on 15 January before the Conference of Rulers on 24 January. That way he will be able to be elected as the next King of Malaysia according reports.

Very interesting development. Had they not done so, I would have expected the current deputy king (i.e., the sultan of Perak) to be the next king. With this move Pahang tries to secure the throne (as the now former sultan would not have been elected; otherwise they would have been made deputy king a few years ago); they at least have the support of the sultan of Johor (next in rotation after Pahang - he will most likely hope to be elected as deputy king), the new sultan's brother-in-law.

For those who can read Dutch or don't mind using Google Translate: Royalblog provides a good read on this topic.

Below the list of kings of Malaysia:

  4. Ismail Nasiruddin of Terengganu 21 September 1965 – 20 September 1970
  5. Abdul Halim of Kedah (1st term) 21 September 1970 – 20 September 1975
  6. Yahya Petra of Kelantan 21 September 1975 – 29 March 1979

Yes, I am also quite curious. But now that the king has been dethroned, the Prime Minister and his government are pursuing a crackdown not on the former king, but on the former king's critics.

https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/kl-plans-new-laws-to-protect-sultans-from-slander-attacks

Three people have been arrested for allegedly insulting Kelantan's Sultan Muhammad V after he stepped down as the country's King, or Yang di-Pertuan Agong, in comments posted on Facebook

[…]

Critics say the arrests contradict the ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition's promise to abolish the controversial Act that critics say muzzles freedom of speech.

Earlier yesterday, Malaysia's de facto Law Minister Liew Vui Keong said the government will seek to enact new laws and amend existing ones to protect the Malay rulers from slander, the official Bernama news agency reported.

[…]

Comments that are currently deemed by law to be seditious include those that "create discontent or disaffection among the subjects of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong or of the ruler of any state".

Offenders can be fined up to RM5,000 (S$1,650) or jailed for up to three years, or both.

[…]

Current penalties for certain offences against the monarchy were too lenient, [Mr Liew] was cited by the Bernama news agency as saying.

And, after being bombarded with Facebook messages, three firms have suspended employees for allegedly insulting the king on social media.

It's still a bit weird to read about a Dutch guy named Dennis Verbaas to now be referred to as 'Dennis Muhammad Abdullah'. At least he was allowed to keep his first name.

https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/s...l-drama-to-rest-while-online-portals-add-back

"Courtiers from among the nine palaces in Malaysia told The Malaysian Insight that the rulers made this unprecedented move to protect the royal institution - already reeling from rising public questioning about their role during the May 9 general election that finally saw Barisan Nasional (BN) lose its grip on power since Merdeka when the pact was known as the Alliance," the news portal [The Malaysian Insight] wrote.

[…]

The tipping point was Sultan Muhammad V's questionable choice in marrying the Russian, whose past modelling career had raised more than several eyebrows, especially in Muslim conservative Malaysia and more so in Kelantan, where Parti Islam SeMalaysia runs the state government.

On Twitter, while many expressed surprise at the King's resignation, there has been overwhelming support for Perak's Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, the deputy and acting king, to be the next King. However, based on the rotational system, Pahang state's monarch Sultan Ahmad Shah is next in queue.

I believe there is a requirement in Malaysia for legitimate children to take the family name of their father. I suppose that it would have seemed out of place if the Sultan's grandchildren had had to use a Dutch last name.

Princess Aminah of Jahor and her hsuband Dennis Muhammed Abdullah -formerly Dennis Verbaas- issued a statement denying rumours on social media that claim their marriage is on the rocks.

A statement on the facebook account of the Jahor said:

STATEMENT ON RUMOURS ABOUT TUNKU TUN AMINAH’S MARRIAGE
The recent spate of rumours circulating on social media regarding HH Tunku Tun Aminah’s marriage to Encik Dennis Muhammad Abdullah being on the rocks are malicious and untrue.
The Johor Royal Family are upset that irresponsible parties are spreading these baseless rumours about their personal lives.
In a statement to the Royal Press Office, HH Tunku Aminah voiced her displeasure at rumours circulating on social media about her marriage as well as alleged ‘business dealings’ with skincare and slimming products.
“My husband and I are happy, contrary to what the rumours say.
“I have also not endorsed any product as written by these unscrupulous people who are out to use my name in order to get attention,” she said.
Complaints lodged with Facebook have also not been acted upon promptly.
The Johor Royal Family hopes that immediate action will be taken by Facebook to take down the malicious content, in line with the company’s pledge to ensure fake news is dealt with sternly

Pomp and ceremony indeed! It appears to have been a beautiful inauguration. Have the details of the ceremony and the historical traditions been published anywhere in English?

Interesting statement. Is the princess perhaps implying that it is the businesses who are circulating the "dealings" rumors for publicity?
