It was announced this morning that the Sultan of Brunei Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah has been officially invited to the Installation Ceremony of the King of Malaysia Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong XIV Tuanku Abdul Halim on 11 April 2012.

The invitation was presented by the Information Minister of Malaysia. It is said that many programmes will be arranged in honour of this Installation Ceremony including the most awaited Royal exhibition at the National Museum.

He passed away early this morning, left his consort Datin Seri Noraini Jane and three children Raja Kechil Tengah Ahmad Nazim, Raja Eminah and Raja Bainunisa.​

Almarhum Raja Ashman Shah will be buried at the Royal Mausoleum of Bukit Chandan in Perak in the afternoon today.​













 
 
Banners and flyers have been well spread around Kuala Lumpur and other places to announce the upcoming Installation Ceremony. I caught a rare glimpse of the new official potrait of the King and Queen.

Tuanku Abdul Halim in this portait wearing the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's ceremonial outfit with the headgear Tengkolok DiRaja 'Dendam Tak Sudah', the Muskat (the beautifully adorned dark jacket), the two state daggers Keris Kerajaan and Keris Pendek DiRaja as well as The Most Exalted Order of the Crown of the Realm (Darjah Utama Seri Mahkota Negara).

I am rather waiting forward to tomorrow's ceremony; it promises to be a beautiful and memorable event.
 
As my boss was away today I managed to see most of the ceremony while at work. Unfortunately I had to turn the sound off, but it was still very interesting and I loved all the colourful outfits. It was good to see all the rulers together having a nice chat before entering the hall. I did not realise the new Raja Permaisuri Agong is not the same consort the King had during his first reign as Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Now I'm inspired to get a better understanding of the different royal houses and their history.

Is the federal monarchy popular in Malaysia? I wonder if five years is really long enough for the royal couple to make a strong impact on the nation. I also wonder if there is a sense of pride in a state when their sultan is the nation's king.
 
Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah has become the first person to hold the position of king twice under Malaysia's unique rotating monarchy.
The 84-year-old, who is said to be a fan of Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra, was previously king in the 1970s.

Great to hear you managed to watch the Installation Ceremony. I was also surprised to see the broadcaster had full access to the Hall of Seri Maharaja where the Rulers and Consorts waited before the ceremony began. Tuanku Haminah, the current consort of the King Tuanku Abdul Halim was previously his second wife. His consort whom you saw during the first reign was his first wife, Almarhumah Sultanah Bahiyah, but she passed away in 2003. So after the demise of Almarhumah Sultanah Bahiyah, Tuanku Haminah becomes the new consort.

The federal monarchy is very popular in Malaysia, no matter who among the nine Malay Rulers become the head of state, each one of them is very well-known among Malaysians. They are the symbol of unity among the various factions of Malaysian community. If you point pictures of any Malay Sultan to any Malaysians young and old, they are generally able to recognise them as the Sultan of this state or that state. The people from where the Sultan comes from are indeed very proud to see their ruler becomes the head of state, similarly people from other states also rejoice and share the same happiness. The current King who is also the Sultan of Kedah has several palaces in his state and also one palace in Kuala Lumpur. The Sultan of Selangor has various palaces in his own state and also one palace in the Malaysian administrative capital of Putrajaya and also another one in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysians despite living in a federal country with different states move freely from one state to another and they do not feel separated at all. It's just that the history has moulded the country to be in such a federation form due to the British policies in the Malay states back then as well as for administrative purpose and to preserve the sovereignty of the nine Malay Rulers in the Peninsula of Malaysia.

Malaysia managed to become a federal monarchy on the basis of compromise, toleration and brotherhood. When the nine Malay Rulers who have formed the Conference of Rulers agreed on the election and rotation system for the office of the head of state in 1957, it was a decision that was made based on the spirit of goodwill and brotherhood that they were willing to surrender some of their powers for the sake of the federation. What happens when a country has so many rulers or Sultans?, just pick one of them to be the head of state and eliminate the others? or just abolish all of them and declare a republic?. No, it does not happen in Malaysia, so out of the spirit of compromise, fraternity and unity - the election and rotational system is the perfect solution.

2. The Royal exhibition of Raja Kita at the old palace Istana Negara, Jalan Syed Putra, Kuala Lumpur will be opened to the public from 16 April 2012 until 15 June 2012. Everyday 9.00am to 5.00pm. Admission is free.

In a way, yes, there is a new royal family.

Malaysian Monarchy differs from most other Monarchies in that it is an elective one. There are eight states that are hereditary Monarchies - Kedah, Johor, Pahang, Perak, Terengganu, Kelantan, Selangor and Perlis. Another state, Negeri Sembilan, is an elective monarchy.

Every five years, Conference of Rulers - meeting of the sultans of those nine states - takes place, where they elect (among themselves) the Head of State of the whole of Malaysia - the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (the King). The election is made through rotation system, based on agnatic primogeniture, thus excluding females and their descendants. Only one thing can temporarily break the rotation system - if the heir is too young to succeed. For example, when Tuanku Munawir died in 1967, his son and heir, Tunku Muhriz, was deemed too young to succeed; instead, the Conference of Rulers elected his uncle, Tuanku Jaafar, to succeed Tuanku Munawir. However, when the next turn came, the Monarchs of the nine states bypassed Jaafar's son and elected the original heir - Tunku Muhriz - as the next King.

Right now, the royal house of Malaysia is Kedah since the current King, Abdul Halim, was the Sultan of Kedah. He is also the only King to be elected twice, his previous tenure being from 1970 to 1975. The next Yang di-Pertuan Agong will be from Kelantan.

This morning King Tuanku Abdul Halim has consented to receive the visiting President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan. This was the first time Tuanku Abdul Halim received a foreign head of state since his Installation as the 14th King of Malaysia.

The President of Kazakhstan was accorded a State Welcoming Ceremony at the Parliament Square with 14-gun salute
