Selangor

Sultan of Selangor an inspiration for all leaders
I AM heartened to read that the Sultan of Selangor has told his subjects that he does not want anything lavish for any function he attends “Nothing lavish please” (The Star, Dec 9).
His advice for us to put our money to better and more humanitarian use is to be lauded.
This royal advice comes just a day after a similar message was sent out by the Office of the Chief Minister of Penang whose birthday was last week.
While a CM’s birthday does not rank on the same scale as that of the Yang diPertuan Agong or of a sultan, nevertheless the joy of the celebrant and the rakyat, and family and friends is no less different.

Tuanku Mizan returns home in full royal tradition
Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and Tuanku Nur Zahirah returned to Terengganu at the end of His Majesty's reign as the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong in full royal tradition. Tuanku Mizan, who was installed as the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on April 26, 2007 for a five-year term, left Istana Negara at 11am Monday.
[...]
Earlier, the royal couple spent time to shake hands with all of the 500 staff of Istana Negara before proceeding to the Parliament Square for the official farewell ceremony.
Tuanku Mizan wore the official attire for the Head of State known as "muskat".
Muskat, the costume that originated from the old government of Muscat, which is now known as Oman, is made of black thread and sewn with gold-coloured embroidery in the form of the hibiscus flower, which is the Malaysian national flower.
Their Majesties left the Istana Negara in the official vehicle for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, escorted by seven outriders and 12 sovereign escorts from the Royal Armoured Corps.
As they left the Istana Negara, they passed by an Honour Guard mounted by members of the 6th Battalion Royal Ranger Regiment comprising three officers and 45 other ranks lead by Major Mohd Zaffar Ismail, while another group from the same regiment played the national anthem Negara Ku.

Powers of the king
Tomorrow will see the ascendancy of the 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah of Kedah.
The actual Coronation date is usually months later.
During the Coronation, the King will be taking the formal oath of office.
Despite the interval between the two dates, the King has all the powers vested upon him as our system is a constitutional monarchy in which the King is elected, says constitutional expert Datuk Prof Dr Shad Saleem Faruqi.
