Swedish Residences General Discussion

Well, I agree with the matter... It wouldn't be so simple to give shelter at the palace and I think they are discussing very good points and alternatives...

Carl Philip received a holiday home in Sunne as a christening gift. Soon after the King chose to buy a house next to it.
He sold this house last December, on 1 December last year registered the king's sale of his house at the National Land Survey in Uddevalla. The purchase price is SEK 625 000 and the new owners are a Norwegian couple of Jessheim in Norway - Stig and Gunny Bodin.
- Yes, it is true that the house has been sold. It has not been used for a long time and in recent years it has been leased and therefore it was better to sell, says Jan Lindman, financial director of the court.
- The house has been empty. It was used for a while by the SÄPO who was with the prince in Sunne, but recently they have found other solutions and then there was no reason to keep the house, says Lindman.
625 000 SEK. What the king does with the money?
- They go into the bank.
New owner Stig Bodin had no idea that it was the king's house he bought.
- No, not until the deal would be signed. A house is a house, a cottage is a cottage. There is nothing more to it.
In January, the couple moved in and are using it now as a summer residence with Carl Philip and Sofia as immediate neighbors, but they haven't yet seen the couple.
- No, but they are for us as the other neighbors at any time.
When you moved in, had the king left behind something?
- No, Stig laughs, not even a little ghost.

I'm surprised the king did not give the house to Carl Philip and Sofia, but I didn't know that CP already had a house in Varmland as a christening gift. (Did Victoria and Madeleine get homes as gifts, or CP got one because he was the perceived crown prince at the time?). I didn't realize CP has a lot of properties, so I can understand the stink raised about CP and Sofia moving into Queen's Pavillion a while back.

Here is Carl Philip's house in Värmland, which he got as a christening gift. Victoria and Madeleine haven't got houses as christening gifts.

And then Carl Philip owns the Ökenäs farm in Källvik, where he according to his own words proposed Sofia. He inherited it in 2007 from former naval officer Bertil Jonsén. The farm has 98 hectares of forest and agricultural land.

Does anyone know do the Swedish royals have a royal residence in Rome. It was stated in an article.

Not what I know of. The Royal Court announced that the dinner Queen Silvia attended the other day would take place at the residence of the Swedish Ambassador in Rome.

Due to the incident in Stockholm on 7 April, the opening dates for some of the Royal sights has been changed. Drottningholm Palace, the Riddarholmen Church and the Treasury at the Royal Palace will be closed on 8 April.
The Royal Apartments and the Museum Tre Kronor at the Royal Palace will be open, with entrance only from the Western Vault at the Outer Court Yard. The other entrances to the Royal Palace will be closed on 8 April.

Today at 8 o’clock soldiers from the Royal Life Guards raised the flag at the Royal Palace. Due to yesterday’s attack the flag was immediately lowered at half-mast. The flags at Drottningholm Palace and Haga Palace are also flying at half-mast today.

High radon levels have been measured at the Royal Palace and Haga Palace

The Royal Palace has big problems with high radon levels. In some areas of the Royal Armoury, the levels are so high that the employees can't be there for a long time.
The Royal Palace in Stockholm has long been drawn with major radon problems.
The limit value is 200 Bq / m3 air. Extremely high levels of up to 15,000 Bq / m3 air were measured in 2017, despite the fact that radon clearance have been in progress for over ten years.
- That's right. Increased ventilation on daytime lowers the values, confirms Charlotte Dahn-Gunther at the National Property Board, which is responsible for the care and maintenance of the royal palaces.
Even in Haga Palace as well as in Villa Beylon near the Ulriksdal Palace high radon values have been measured.
The explanation for the high radon levels is that the Royal Palace, Haga Palace and Ulriksdal stand on Brunkebergsåsen, a gravel ridge that easily passes through the radon.

A new book "Kungliga slotten – Människor och berättelser" (The Royal Palaces - People and Stories) was launched on 6th June.
https://inpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/KungligabokenFrilagd.jpg

In Sweden there are no less than eleven royal palaces and castles. They are a unique cultural heritage. Nevertheless, many of them are relatively unknown. In the new book Royal Palaces - People and Stories, their exciting story is brought to life.
The book tells about some of the people who have lived and worked in the palaces and depict exciting events that have occurred here. A separate chapter depicts the royal women. The book also highlights international influences that have characterized the castles, furnishings and trends as well as one and another castle secret.
Royal Palaces - People and stories tells about the Swedish royal history from Vasa time to the present. In the book we meet both the royals behind the scenes.
In this book, the female perspectives also take place. We meet royal women who have not previously been portrayed as often as Princess Eugénie, committed to animal rights, the enigmatic princess Hedvig Sofia, Karl XII's favorite sister, the King's grandmother Margareta - artist, flower princess and hockey player - and many more.
At the Royal Palaces you can literally touch the story. Many of the original items still exist - from children's books to travel beds from the 17th century. The book reveals the secrets of some of these exciting objects.
The book also links many of the most dramatic events in Swedish history to the places they played - and the rooms that you can still visit today, and contains also an easy-to-read overview of the history of the 11 Royal Palaces.
The original texts have been developed in collaboration with the Royal Court for the Royal Palace's summer magazines during five years.
The book is sold primarily through the Royal Gift Shops and online bookshops.

Royal Walks
The Royal Walks app guides you along a scenic stroll through Djurgården, from Djurgården Bridge and along the waterfront to the Royal summer palace, Rosendal.
The route takes in sculptures, buildings, historical sites and events. The Bernadotte Walk tells of the significance of the Bernadotte dynasty for Royal Djurgården – all of the seven Bernadotte kings have links to the area. Find out about the king who constructed Rosendal Palace and its surrounding parkland, the king who celebrated his silver jubilee with a world exhibition, and the king who inaugurated the world’s first National City Park.
The Waterfront Walk stretches from Djurgården Bridge along the shore in the direction of Rosendal. Along the way we pass the “Swedish Nightingale”, and learn about the people and events that gave Jägarbackarna and Villa Godthem their names.
The app also allows you to create your own walks to suit your interests, with the categories Garden and nature, Buildings and constructions, Royal, Places and events and Sculptures.

In April is published a book "Slottstid : Klockor på de svenska Kungliga slotten" (Palace time: Clocks at the Swedish Royal Palaces)

The clocks at the Swedish royal palaces tick and can tell amazing stories. Looking closer to those where they stand, often surrounded by candelabra or urns and with a background of a gilt mirror, we can discover a whole world.
In the book the clocks and their background is described with text and photos. Why they stand right there, when they are made and by whom.

The court published its annual web magazine about the Royal Palaces in the spring.

At the magazine Victoria welcomes everyone to visit the Royal Palaces:
Welcome to the Royal Palaces
Spring is here and summer is coming. At the Royal Palaces around Mälardalen the preparation is in full to welcome all summer visitors. I hope you are one of them.
More and more people are getting their eyes on local tourism - to vacation at home and discover all the great things we have.
The Royal Palaces with their parks are perfect for day trips. Beside the regular showings exhibitions, concerts and lectures are arranged. It is given also opportunities to meet some of the knowledgeable people who work to nurture and show our cultural heritage.
April 26, the King inaugurated this year's edition of the drawing competition and the exhibition The Thinking The hand, which is shown in the Gustav III's Museum of Antiquities until the midsummer weekend. The beautiful museum is one too many unknown parts of the Royal Palace.
In October, the Hall of State at the Royal Palace will be filled with textile glory. Then the textile artist, contractor and designer Märta Måås-Fjetterström's rugs will be shown in a unique exhibition. One of these beautiful carpets is in The Grand living room at Ulriksdal Palace. There you can already this summer get a taste of the autumn exhibition.
I also want to warmly recommend the parks that surround several of the Royal Palaces. There, nature meets culture, history meets present - there can be both big and small have fun and play freely on your own explorations.
The royal sights have a lot to offer for all ages. I warmly welcome you to the cultural treasure that the Royal Palaces are!

King Karl XIII was responsible, I believe, for transferring the Crown Estate to the Swedish state in 1809 in exchange for the so-called "royal right of disposal" (den kungliga dispositionsrätten).

Could anyone please comment on that arrangement and what the right of disposal actually covers and entails ?

The Royal right of disposal covers 11 Royal palaces and Royal Djurgården. Djurgården is one of the main islands that make up Stockholm and is made up of public parks, an amusement park, an exclusive enclave of residential houses, several large villas and a few museums. The Royal Mews and a residential property opposite the Royal Palace (inhabited by among others Princess Christina & her husband) are also included in the right of disposal.
The Royal right of disposal, which is confirmed by Parliament every time a new monarch accedes to the throne, means that the monarch doesn't own any of the properties involved but has the right of disposal for themself and their family. Core members of the Royal House has traditionally been provided housing and transportation by the state. The properties involved are state property and 9 of the Royal palaces are administered by Statens fastighetsverk (The National Property Board) while Royal Djurgården together with the Rosendal and Haga palaces are administered by Kungliga Djurgårdsförvaltningen (The Royal Djurgården Administration Board). The right of disposal also means that the different rental properties on the estates of the palaces and Djurgården is mainly inhabited by employees of the court for the duration of their employment or other persons close to the court and the Royal family.

Visits to the Royal Palaces increase again
Visitors are coming again and save the economy for the royal palaces.
The annual report for The finances of the Palace Administration shows a small surplus.
When the King takes a look at the accounting for the various operations, it looks better for 2019 than the year before. However, it continues to go a little heavy on The finances of the Palace Administration whose business is to care for and maintain the royal palaces, movables and display activities linked to the palaces. But it goes in the right direction and for 2019 a small, small is reported surplus of SEK 125,000, which is to be compared with a minus of 5.8 million for 2018.
This is stated in The finances of the Palace Administration's annual report for 2019.
- Revenue goes up by about 15 million. The explanation for this is that we have had a lot of visitors to the Palaces. The year before was a hot summer that negatively impacted the visits, especially for the smaller Palaces, says director Jan Lindman (treasurer).
SEK 125,000 sounds a bit like surplus?
- Yes, overtime, it is important to have a surplus to be able to reinvest and maintain. In the long run, there should be a larger surplus than we have today, but we are currently in an investment period, says Jan Lindman.
By far the largest visitor destination is the Royal Palace, followed by Drottningholm Palace.
The annual report for The finances of the Royal Djurgården Administration shows that operations went back by 11 million which is to be compared with almost 39 million in loss in 2018. The year before, the profit was close to 20 million SEK.
One of the major investments last year at Djurgården was Folke Bernadotte's bridge over Djurgårdsbrunnsviken, which was inaugurated in September. The cost for 2019 was 13 million for the bridge.
- No money may go out from Djurgården's operations. All surpluses and deficits must be managed at Djurgården. The important thing for Djurgården is that it should go well and beautify Djurgården in the long run. They have a very long-term view of their results and they have large real estate investments. This means that the result fluctuates up and down a lot, says Jan Lindman.

Svensk Damtidning has at this week's issue an article about Villa Fridhem, which was prince Carl and princess Ingeborg's summer residence, built in 1909.
Princess Ingeborg celebrated her 75th birthday there in 1953. It became the last summer at Villa Fridhem which then was sold to Östergötland County Council. There was convalescent center for 35 years before it became privately owned in 1987. Now it is a hotel (53 rooms and a suite), restaurant and conference center.
In 1994, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia visited Villa Fridhem together with King Albert and Queen Paula of Belgium.
Princess Estelle, the duchess of Östergötland, has visited Villa Fridhem two times at private visits. In 2016 she was there with her father and inaugurated a new suite, which was later named Princess Estelle's suite. In 2017, the crown princess family visited Villa Fridhem. Estelle bathed in the indoor pool and wrote her autograph with large, bold letters in the hotel's guestbook. Villa Fridhem also has a cute old princess' playhouse, where Estelle played.
- It's a wonderful family and fantastic people, says Sofia Regnander and Magnus Dahlin, the hotel's manager and director.

The royal palaces will close temporarily
In connection with the current situation regarding the spread of the new coronavirus, HM The King has decided that public operations at the royal palaces should be closed temporarily.
This decision applies from 21 March until further notice, depending on ongoing developments. As before, pre-booked group tours, talks and other programme activities are cancelled.
“This is a safety precaution in view of the development of coronavirus,” explains Governor of the Royal Palaces Staffan Larsson. “The situation means that it is impossible for us to carry out public operations at the royal palaces. We are monitoring developments, and look forward to welcoming our visitors back as soon as possible. In the meantime, we will be working to make our exhibitions and palaces more accessible via our digital channels. The royal parks will also remain open, unless we announce otherwise.”

It's remarkable that Prince Carl Philip enjoys the largest number of private residences among the king's children despite being one of two spares in his generation (Stenhammar can in effect be added to his list as the king has indicated that he should take over the lease). Will all of the said properties remain with his eventually non-royal descendants, or will any of them return to the royal family in due course?

Since Carl Philip owns all these houses, it seems likely that he leaves them to his descendants in his will, and they will never return to the royal family. He inherited Villa Solbacken from prince Bertil. The house in Ökenäs he inherited from Bertil Jonsén. The lodge in Sunne, Värmland, he got as a christening gift. King Carl Gustaf bought right after that a house near Carl Philip's lodge, but has sold it in 2014.
And would the other members of the royal family be interested in these houses?

The royal parks are open
Royal Djurgården and the royal parks are open every day of the year, 24 hours a day – even during these unusual times. The large parks have plenty of outdoor space, and are easy to get to.
The royal palaces are temporarily closed due to coronavirus and its effects, but Royal Djurgården and the other royal parks in Stockholm and Mälardalen are open as usual. These parks have been places for recreation and meeting others for centuries.
There are several royal parks around Stockholm and Mälardalen, including the World Heritage Site of Drottningholm, Ulriksdal, Tullgarn, Gripsholm, Rosersberg and Strömsholm. They all have their own unique characters and histories.
So get out and enjoy yourself, while paying attention to the Public Health Agency of Sweden's advice. Remember to keep dogs on a lead, and dispose of your litter properly. Always leave the park as you would like to find it!

The royal palaces will reopen on 1 July
HM The King has decided that several of the royal destinations should reopen to visitors. This decision has been made in view of the fact that a number of the state museums are now reopening.
On Wednesday 1 July, the Royal Palace (including the Märta Måås-Fjetterström exhibition Look at the rugs – find me), Drottningholm Palace, the Chinese Pavilion and Gripsholm Castle will reopen. The Royal Gift Shops will open at the same time as the palaces. To ensure a safe and pleasant visit, staff will be helping to control the number of visitors entering the palaces, and ensuring that safe distances are maintained inside.
"Keeping the palaces open and accessible is an important part of the Royal Court of Sweden's role," says Governor of the Royal Palaces Staffan Larsson. "We now look forward to welcoming visitors back to the royal palaces safely. We are also pleased to see how many people took the opportunity to discover our royal parks during the spring, and hope that many more will do so during the summer. We welcome all our visitors back to our palaces, parks and cafés, and will continue to monitor developments closely."
The number of visitors at the royal palaces – including the cafés and shops – will be limited, and those areas where there is a risk of overcrowding or that cannot be staffed will remain closed until further notice.
Marking and signage will remind visitors to keep their distance, and enhanced cleaning routines have been introduced.
To protect yourself and others, all visitors are asked to follow the Public Health Agency of Sweden's advice and recommendations.
