French critics' anger as new series Versailles about great monarch Louis XIV is being produced in English* | Daily Mail Online

I was delighted to see this, An Ard Ri. Unlike the French critics I'm very happy that it is being produced in English as my French is quite basic and I'm not a fan of subtitles.

I readabout this series time ago, and I´m so looking foward to it!

I find the plot and period fascinating and, for once, it is refreshing to see a series based upon the 17th century instead of the always Middle Ages-Renaissance or Victorian Age that seems to be a constant (even if I love them).

I hope it won´t be dissapointing! :)

Really looking forward to this!
I visited Versailles a couple of years ago and have always found it so fascinating.
It'd be wonderful to see a dramatization of life at the palace.
It's rare to see English programmes on the subject (I've only seen one English documentary on Versailles but that was a French doc. dubbed in English).

I watched episode1 last night,I'm not sure about George Blagden as Loius XIV,he's still fresh in my mind as Brother Athelstan in the Vikings.

However I will give it a go!

I don't want to rain on anybody's parade but the series goes between awful and rediculous. It is painful to watch. I understand some diversion from history, but this is just too much. Lot's of steamy sex scenes that are only a few steps away from pornography and lots of difficult looks in the camera and people going on and on about present day themes like equality for women, racial differences etc. Not the foremost issues in the 17th century and it doesn't make the series more credible. The story seems to be reduced to the struggle of Louis XIV and his brother. While in reality his brother was docile enough and the struggle was a generation before between Louis XIII and Gaston of Orleans.

I obviously didn't finish watching it. I wouldn't advice anybody to spend a penny or to waste a minute on it.

Thanks for the review, Marengo. I will certainly bear that in mind before I attempt to buy it. I certainly don't want to fork out money for what seems to be another "The Tudors" type of drama.

This airs in the UK next week. Looking forward to it.

Hmm. It was a fact that Marie-Antoinette was short of cash; she didn't influence much. :ermm:

I don't expect anyting else but sexed up and ridiculous...

So how is Season 2 so far? I wonder when we'll get it in the US.

Episode 1 of series 2 only aired last night on BBC2 and I have yet to watch it.

The current Season 3 of Versailles is being reported as its final season.

A seriously 'missed opportunity'.. SO much of interest happened later in the reign of Louis xiv- War of the Spanish succession, terrible year of 1712, [death of the Dauphin, son of the Dauphin and his wife [Duc and Duchesse de Bourgogne], death of their eldest son [all in THREE weeks], leaving just a tiny boy [ultimately Louis xv]between the throne and the accession of Philippe d'Orleans son as king.
Although Versailles was temporarily abandoned in 1715 [on the death of its builder], the King and the court returned in 1722,and the entire 'show' resumed under a new young King.
I HOPE the series will do the same...

I just put this on my netflix to watch..haven't seen any of it. Shame to hear it is ending so soon.

It must be very costly to produce perhaps they will come back to it in a few years and maybe with a slightly better theme tune!

I actually saw season 3 in French already and it's mostly about the war of the Spanish succession and the abolishment of the edict de Nantes. Plus a bit of the "man in the Iron mask" (I did not understand the reasoning behind him wearing the mask at all!). For someone who is interested in history, it is a very weird season, all kind of happenings mixed together. But the arc about Louis and Philippe becoming friends and find finally trust in their relationship as brothers is lovely, as is the end for the Orleans-triangle. So just watch it for fun as it is historically not true at all, but nice to watch.

The last episode of Season 3 aired this week on BBC2 and that's it the last season was really taking artistic licence with the historical facts and most bizzare was the fact the dauphin was never mentioned from his birth in season 1 until the last episode of season 3.

I just watched the first couple episodes of Season 1 ....it's been quite boring. Not sure I want to continue with it.
