Versailles season 2: How accurate is the BBC series? Is it based on fact or fiction?

Great sets and costumes but a lot of historical licence has been used on this series.

A seriously 'missed opportunity'.. SO much of interest happened later in the reign of Louis xiv- War of the Spanish succession, terrible year of 1712, [death of the Dauphin, son of the Dauphin and his wife [Duc and Duchesse de Bourgogne], death of their eldest son [all in THREE weeks], leaving just a tiny boy [ultimately Louis xv]between the throne and the accession of Philippe d'Orleans son as king.
Although Versailles was temporarily abandoned in 1715 [on the death of its builder], the King and the court returned in 1722,and the entire 'show' resumed under a new young King.
I HOPE the series will do the same...

It must be very costly to produce perhaps they will come back to it in a few years and maybe with a slightly better theme tune!

I actually saw season 3 in French already and it's mostly about the war of the Spanish succession and the abolishment of the edict de Nantes. Plus a bit of the "man in the Iron mask" (I did not understand the reasoning behind him wearing the mask at all!). For someone who is interested in history, it is a very weird season, all kind of happenings mixed together. But the arc about Louis and Philippe becoming friends and find finally trust in their relationship as brothers is lovely, as is the end for the Orleans-triangle. So just watch it for fun as it is historically not true at all, but nice to watch.
