"Elizabeth I" BBC miniseries, 2006

New BBC miniseries about Elizabeth I, starting next week. I wonder how it'll compare to Elizabeth R.

Thanks for sharing Elspeth. This looks interesting although we'll have to wait awhile in the U.S. to see it, I may rent the DVD.

It's hard to believe that anyone could outdo Glenda Jackson's performance in Elizabeth R. Cate Blanchett gave her a run for her money in the theatrical movie Elizabeth but the plot was a bit weak.

I have the DVD from Elizabeth R and all the cast gave such stellar performances - Robert Hary as Leicester, Michael Williams as the duc d'Alencon, and John Shrapnel as Sussex.

I wonder if the actor Tom Hardy who's playing Leicester in the new series is related to Robert Hardy who played Leicester in Elizabeth R. That would be interesting.

Thanks Elspeth.

I cant't imagine we shall have much of a wait here in Australia for it, as we normally get the BBC productions within a couple of months or so of being aired in the UK.

Thanks for the tip, Elspeth! I surely would like to see this one. Now all I have to do is to think about it! :) That's always a problem with me and series...

Smile Helen Mirren in "Elizabeth I"

Hello. For those of you who watched that miniseries (it just aired in the U .S.), what did you think? I've read many book on the British Royals, historical and contemporary. With regards to QE1, I was appalled when I read that the Earl of Essex actually brandished a sword at her person, in a fit of rage! I was suprised he was not arrested on the spot! Helen Mirren was absolutely amazing in her role!! Aside from Queen Elizabeth I, my other favorite is Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. Kindest regards, Roman in Austin, Texas:)

Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Cate Blanchett resumes her role as Elizabeth I, i cant wait to see it!

Virgin queen and love triangle with Sir Walter

Putting matters of state before affairs of the heart earned Elizabeth I the title of the Virgin Queen
However, a Hollywood film is about to claim that she was so in love with Sir Walter Raleigh that she had one of her ladies-in-waiting seduce him so she could live out her own sexual fantasies.
Elizabeth The Golden Age will claim that an infatuated Queen Elizabeth, played by Cate Blanchett, longed for a physical relationship with Raleigh, played by Clive Owen, but held back for fear of losing her crown. Instead, she engineered a relationship between Raleigh and her close confidante Elizabeth "Bess" Throckmorton so she could enjoy a love affair by proxy.

Looks pretty cool ! Helen Mirren played Elizabeth I in a TV film before starring in The Queen for Stephen Frears, didn't she ?

Yes.
Elizabeth I (2005) (TV)
I believe she is credited for being the first actress to play both Queen Elizabeths (regnant) of England. It was a co-production from HBO (US) and I'm not sure which UK network (sorry--not BBC but not sure if it was Granada, Channel 4 or another group). The DVD is available for region 1 (US) but I'm sure it's in other formats by now, may want to check Amazon or other sites. It is definitely drool-worthy for the costumes alone and the performances.

Elizabeth I was great but when I saw trailers of Elizabeth: The Golden Age I can say that can be much better.

OUCH! Reviews are not looking too good for the movie, Elizabeth: The Golden Age.

US critics have savaged Cate Blanchett's new Oscar hope, Elizabeth: The Golden Age.

"Elizabeth: The Golden Age is an unholy mixture of the banal and the bombastic," New York magazine told its readers.

I've never listened to the ramblings of any overpaid movie critic, myself. What the papers have to say means very little to moi...

That may be true; however, many do (as in the general population, not TRF members, royal watchers, etc) listen to "...the ramblings of any overpaid movie critic[s]."

The trailer looks pretty good and as a fan of Cate's work I'll definitely see this film. Perhaps on Sunday I'll go

Then surely those that do, musn't be able to think for themselves...haha...j/k

TRF has nothing to do with it as far as I'm aware. I am talking as an every day world citizen.

I agree that the trailor looks really good and having met Cate at the races (was in the same marquee at The Melbourne Cup. For those who don't know what the Melbourne Cup is, it's the biggest horse racing event in the Southern Hemipshere), and being quite the 'fan' of her's myself, I'm looking forward to this anticipated sequel, whatever the "appraisal".

the movie is in my list of "to see" for sometime soon, perhaps this weekend. however, i didn't see the first one (big mistake of mine, lol). do you think it is important to see one, then the other, or they can be seen as separate movies? i heard amazing reviews from the first one and saw the trailer in the cinema last weekend and it looks good!

Gee, you met her? Fascinating.

I hope Elizabeth:The Golden Age will be historically accurate unlike other biopics that shall remain nameless.

This isn't getting very good reviews...I don't think Cate will get the Oscar nod...or win. There's virtually no positive buzz...

Not so much fascinating, though it was very nice to talk to her freely. She is charmingly grounded.
I too hope for historical accuracy. If there's anything that kills a movie, it's the writers wanting to play around with fact and fiction.
