King Carl Gustaf said at his speech at the Stockholm Water Prize ceremony among other things:

This year’s laureate, professor Stephen McCaffrey has served as counsel in many interstate disputes over shared water resources. He has shown that through diplomacy and effective law making, water can be shared peacefully – becoming a catalyst for cooperation, rather than conflict.
This year’s theme for World Water Week is called “Water and waste: reduce and reuse”.
In Sweden, we use more than 150 litres of fresh water per person and day. This is an enormous luxury compared to other parts of the world; or an incredible waste, depending on how you look at it.

For the last 21 years, my daughter, Crown Princess Victoria, has been Patron of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize. This is a most important prize, celebrating ambition and creative thinking among the next generation of leaders and scientists.

People quote Victoria's speech at Twitter
"HRH Crown Princess Victoria at Stockholm Water Prize Ceremony: ”The price of water is low, the costs of misuse is high”. Very true!"
"Crown Princess Victoria is Sweden says #SDG6 on clean #water and #sanitation is a prerequisite for the achievement of the rest of SDGs"
"“A sustainable future is fueled by clean water” -princess victoria"

Victoria said at her very good speech among other things:
Tonight I have presented the prize on behalf of my father, His Majesty the King. To his regret, he was not able to attend this evening. He has asked me to convey his best wishes to all of you and his warmest congratulations to this year’s laureates, Professor Bruce Rittman and Professor Mark van Loosdrecht.
For as long as I can remember, my father has been deeply involved in issues related to the environment and nature. As a child, I learned from him to appreciate nature. But also, to recognize my own responsibility for taking care of it. Today, I try to pass on that love for nature to my own children.(...)
Access to clean water is an important goal in itself. But at the same time it is a prerequisite for the fulfilment of all the other goals. To put it simply: a sustainable future is fuelled by clean water.
And while the price of water is low, the costs related to misuse of water are enormous.
Ladies and gentlemen, the world is facing major water problems. Every ninety seconds, a child dies from a water-related disease. By 2050, our oceans may contain more plastic than fish. And let there be no doubt: climate change will make existing water challenges even greater.

Victoria pays tribute to the sea with a wavy dress: "Clear statement"
Victoria's fiery passion for water issues came to the fore when she appeared in a wavy blue design dress on Thursday.
This was when the Crown Princess participated in the award ceremony of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize at Berns in Stockholm.
- It is a clear statement that really emphasizes her commitment to water and the environment, says fashion expert Emma Danielsson.
On Thursday evening, Crown Princess Victoria presented the Stockholm Junior Water Prize. This year it was Macinley Butson who received the honorable prize from the always-stylish crown princess, this year wearing an exclusive deep blue design dress with photo print.
- It is a very clear indication of precisely the water in the print so it fits the occasion perfectly. It's a perfect combination between the playful in print and the very elegant style and dressy fit, says Emma Danielsson.
The Crown Princess succeeds with the unique dress combining her water engagement and great fashion interest in a very effective way, according to Emma Danielsson.
- It is a carefully thought-out choice and I would not be surprised if the dress was specially designed just for this occasion.
The Crown Princess wore the occasion in Swedish honor in a dress from Maxjenny and earrings from Hvorslev. Both the shoes and the bag are well-used favorites from the Crown Princess's wardrobe.
- Maxjenny is a favorite of Victoria and significant to her is that she works with this type of photo print and the pompous style we see here, says Emma Danielsson.

Groundwater expert, Dr John Cherry, wins 2020 Stockholm Water Prize
Dr John Cherry receives the world’s most prestigious water award, the Stockholm Water Prize, in 2020. He is awarded for discoveries that have revolutionized our understanding of groundwater vulnerability. Dr Cherry’s work has raised awareness of how groundwater contamination is growing across the world and has led to new, more efficient methods to tackle the problem.

World Water Week 2020 is cancelled
After a great deal of discussion and with much sadness, we have decided to cancel World Water Week 2020 scheduled to take place in Stockholm 23-28 August. This was not an easy decision to make, nor is it one we have taken lightly. This year would have been the 30th anniversary of World Water Week – but instead it has been cancelled for the first time ever.
The formal decision was taken by SIWI’s Board after closely monitoring both the spread of COVID-19 around the world and the measurements being taken by governments globally. It became clear that the unpredictability of the situation, which is likely to last for many months, would make the planning and execution of World Water Week extremely challenging for SIWI, our community of conveners, our partners and all participants.
We are delighted to announce that this year’s Stockholm Water Prize Laureate is Professor John Cherry for discoveries that have revolutionized our understanding of groundwater vulnerability. We are exploring how to celebrate Dr John Cherry at World Water Week in 2021.
We are also investigating ways to organize this year’s Stockholm Junior Water Prize – with many national competitions already underway – and will communicate more on this in due time.

Victoria made the speech from Brunnsviken, close to Haga Palace
- The last six months I have spent a lot of time reminding my children that they have to wash their hands! said Victoria and smiled. And it was understood that it is probably not always easy to persuade Prince Oscar, 4 - and that mother Victoria has to fight to some extent. Four-year-olds usually do not think that soap and water are a priority…
So it was water that was on the agenda this day and Victoria was with digital from home Haga Palace. This time she had moved out to the waterside, and she had fittingly enough with her own "home bay" Brunnsviken as a background. Over the years, Victoria herself has become something of a water specialist, and now she highlighted the fact that 785 million people do not have access to clean water. And that 3 billion people completely do not have the opportunity to wash their hands.
- It is just an example of how the question of access to water is brutally unequal, she said - with an unusually strong word choice for her. But above all, she focused on how much good these young researchers do:
- Meeting the participants here always fills me with hope for the future!
