Countess Bettina Bernadotte on Friday

At the elementary school Dettingen the starting signal was given for the project "Mini gardens - gardening with children" at the initiative "Europa Minigärtner". Financially supported by the Baden-Württemberg Foundation and the Heidehof Foundation, this year the non-profit organization awards two raised beds, the so-called mini gardens, including soil and seeds to 165 interested schools throughout Baden-Württemberg, including the elementary school in Dettingen. "Gardening offers many valuable links to topics such as nutrition, health and the recognition of regional and global contexts. As an exceptional space for learning and experiencing, the mini-gardens are supposed to enrich everyday school life", says countess Bettina Bernadotte, the founder of Europa Minigärtner.

As Lady Finn just mentioned Dagmar von Arbin, a great-granddaughter of King Oscar II & Queen Sofia of Sweden & Norway celebrates her 103 birthday today. Dagmar beat the record of her aunt Elsa Cedergren a few days ago & is now the longest living member of the Bernadotte family ever, with her brother Count Oscar Bernadotte who passed away last year aged 97 the longest living male Bernadotte ever. Dagmar was one of the bridesmaids at the wedding of the parents of King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden, Princess Sibylla of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha and Prince Gustav Adolf of Sweden in 1932.

Svensk Damtidning's reporter Kristina Svedell took countess Marianne Bernadotte back to Dramaten, the Royal Dramatic Theatre, where Marianne was an actress for eleven years.

- I belong here, says Marianne Bernadotte, 94, as it was the most natural thing in the world.
Here is the Grand Old Lady of the Royal family well-known although she was Marianne Lindberg then. At Cafe Pauli, they open the cafe especially for the actress. Marianne was only 21 years old when she started at the theatre's school.
She was acclaimed for her performances from the first moment and is the oldest left of Ingmar Bergman's actors.
- Oh, the Round room, says Marianne pleasantly and lets her eyes glide over the wall paintings.
She explains that they used to repeat here and the time between then and now feels very short. Marianne remembers the ballet lessons, the gravity and the total devotion.
- My heart is here, she emphasizes and adds with earnest fervor that her existence at Dramaten was a matter on life and death and that she spent eleven years here.
The first time Marianne Bernadotte stood at the main scene was in 1946, at her role as Ariel. Marianne lights up at the memory. It feels special to sit here with her, with an open door to the marble foyer.
She has worked with all the big ones.
Marianne got married in 1948 with inventor Gabriel Tchang and got three children in five years; Robert, Richard and daughter Marielle, the only one still alive. Little Richard died when he was only one year and some months old. That evening when he died, Marianne stood at work at the scene, but she got to home before he passed away. And she went almost straight from his funeral to Dramaten to act again.
There was never any discussion of the matter and the roles required it.
- The conditions were inhuman, she says with tears slowly flowing along her cheeks. When you were in the middle of it, you didn't think, the sense of duty was so strong. It was an endless and painful period.
In addition, Marianne stood for the family's livelihood and was well aware of the importance of working.
How was it to work with Ingmar Bergman?
- We got a wonderful contact! He was unconventional and had a hypnotic ability on us actors. And then he was no demon.
- I was tired of playing beautiful girls and in Ingmar's direction I finally had to play a young woman who you could go into the soul of.
In connection with Dramaten's rebuilding in the late 1950s, Marianne traveled around the country with Riksteatern. She longed home to her children and was tired and worn out after all the years when she had worked almost without rest. In addition, the marriage began to crack.
It was when she and the king's son and designer Sigvard Bernadotte fell in love with each other on a summer evening in Båstad in 1957. Since that time, it was the two of them forever and it led to that that Marianne left the theater.
- Sigvard wanted a wife to have dinner with in the evenings, he made it clear from the beginning and then I couldn't stand on the stage. I got to choose.
- But much love was needed to fill the emptiness after the theater, she says.

Countess Bettina Bernadotte at the jury:
Fourth-year Penn State landscape architecture students who spent the spring semester studying abroad in Bonn, Germany, were tasked with a unique group project: Collaborate with students studying at Nürtingen University to the connect the German city of Überlingen with Mainau Island, a well-established botanical garden located across Lake Constance, by designing “water gardens.” The designs would be submitted to the International Student Workshop where a jury of professionals would critique the work and select five finalists.
The jury of critics who selected the five finalists included: instructors from Penn State and Nürtingen; Jan Zeitler, the mayor of Überlingen; Bettina Gräfin Bernadotte, the owner of the Mainau Botanical Garden (who, interestingly enough, is also a Swedish countess); and Markus Zeiler, director of the Mainau Botanical Garden.

Countess Marianne Bernadotte has given an interview to Aftonbladet, which Expressen quotes.

Marianne Bernadotte met her life's love Sigvard Bernadotte in the 60's.
There was immediate love - and even though the former prince was married, the two became a couple.
Shortly after the divorce, Marianne met 17 years older Sigvard Bernadotte, the king's uncle, through common acquaintances in Båstad. Marianne fell for him, saying that he became her security.
But it was not entirely uncomplicated - Sigvard was married to Danish Sonja Robbert. For Marianne's sake he divorced and in the same year, 1961, they married and Marianne, then 37, became a Bernadotte. When she talks about Sigvard she gets to wipe away the tears.
- He divorced and married me and my children. It is not wise that he dared. He became like a father to them. It was on life and death, he really invested everything, says Marianne.
Sigvard had son Michael Bernadotte, with Sonja Robbert. Marianne had a son and a daughter. Some common children never became.
Sigvard Bernadotte lost his title when he married non-royal German Erica Patzek in 1934. Apanage and the place in the order of succession disappeared, all according to the order of succession at that time.
According to Marianne, it was very important for Sigvard to get restitution. She says that he felt badly treated and was both angry and sad. The couple called themselves Prince and Princess anyway, which created a conflict with the royal family.
In 2002 Sigvard passed away and Marianne was alone. She describes it as waiting for her, and her name is already engraved on the gravestone.
- When I visit Sigvard's grave at the Royal Cemetery, I see my own name, my year of birth and then a dash. Then it will be just set what year it will be. There will not be so many years anymore, but a couple maybe.
Now Marianne spends a lot of time with her grandchildren. A great-grandchild she has also had time to get. In April last year, Thyra was born, she has the same name as Marianne's mother. When she turned one, she got a painting that Sigvard painted for Marianne's mother's 80th birthday.

White roses from Mainau for the Maria in Todtmoos: The initiators of the statue of Mary on the Kirchberg high above the roofs of Todtmoos have realized their project and brought for the planting of the pedestal of the statue of Mary white roses from the flower island Mainau. Volker Albiez and Father Roman Brud were personally welcomed there by countess Diana Bernadotte.
The countess was the patron of an impressive charity concert for a fountain project in Africa some time ago and was impressed by the idea that Mainau roses should decorate the statue of the Virgin in the future. The Countess even spontaneously announced a visit to Todtmoos in the near future.
