Any particular reason why the king is not dressed up in traditional garb?
The King generally never wears a folk costume.

It's a royal variety of the local costume that was traditionally worn by the women on Öland, the island where the Royal summer palace Solliden is situated. The ordinary costume was deemed a bit simple so Queen Victoria developed a more elaborate version of it together with Oda Berg who worked at the Kalmar Provincial Folk Handicraft Museum (or something like that).

Interesting; I assumed it was the traditional Öland dress - so good to know it's the 'royal version' of the traditional dress.

For Kathia Sophia: the queen and crown princess also wear it every year for the evening concert on Victoria's birthday (see for example her 40th birthday celebration).

I had no idea about it myself until I looked around to reply to the question.

Thank you all for your replies
I think it is a shame the King doesn't wear it. It would look really nice to see all members of the royal family in traditional garb once in a while.

About Öland dress
Öland - Kalmar handicraft

Victoria's birthday, queen Silvia wore the Öland dress for the first time at the public celebration/concert in 1984 and Victoria obviously in 1992.

I think Victoria attended this year at the event because she was chosen as The Öland Inhabitant of the Year last year. And every year all the people (now 40) who have been The Öland Inhabitant of the Year, are invited to this event. Some attend, others don't.
Victoria attended the event also in 1996, when she delivered The Öland Inhabitant of the Year Award to her father, the king:

The King and Victoria met today representatives of the Police's National Operations Department (NOA). The King and Crown Princess were briefed on the latest explosions and shootings.
After the meeting, the King made the following statement:
“The concern that these acts raise in the public is shared by me and my family. We want to express our participation with those affected and at the same time express our support to the police and other authorities in their continued work."

Victoria's and the King's support - after the shooting deaths
After last week's shooting in Sweden: Crown Princess Victoria and King Carl XVI Gustaf now show their support to the families of the relatives.
"The concern that these acts raise in the public is shared by me and my family," the king said in a statement.
Sweden has been shaken by two notable deaths last week.
On Monday morning, a 31-year-old doctor and toddler mother was murdered on an open street in Malmö, and on the night of Wednesday, an 18-year-old woman was shot dead in an apartment in Råcksta, Stockholm.
None of the women are said to have been the target of the murders, but instead men in their vicinity, both with a criminal background, are reported as the real targets.

On Friday, September 20, the King and Queen gave the Sweden dinner at the Royal Palace. Through the Sweden Dinner, the Royal Family wants to draw attention to people who have made significant efforts locally, regionally or nationally.
Invited guests were representatives from culture, business, education, sports and associations from Sweden's 21 counties as well as the country's governors. The approximately 180 guests were welcomed by the Royal Couple and Crown Princess Couple in Lovisa Ulrika's dining room in the Bernadotte Apartments.
A brass ensemble from the Life Guards' Dragoon Music Corps performed in the Eastern stairwell when the guests after the greeting ceremony went stairs up to the State Apartments where the Swedish dinner took place in the White Sea Hall.
The Sweden Dinner is a form of representation dinner at the Royal Palace, which was introduced on the occasion of the King's 40 years on the throne in 2013.
The King took to the table Västmanland's county governor Minoo Aktharzand. On his left was King Helena Karlberg, CEO of Piteå Science Park in Norrbotten County.
The Queen had Gotland County Governor Anders Flanking to the table, who also held the evening speeches. On his right side was Queen Leif Hylander, head of the Rescue Service in Perstorp, Skåne county.
The Crown Princess had Västra Götaland County Governor Anders Danielsson to the table. On his right side was Crown Princess Björn Blommegård, Regional Manager at the Volunteer Air Force Halland, Halland County.
Prince Daniel had Södermanland County governor Liselott Hagberg to the table. On his left was Prince Frida Johansson, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce Värmland, Värmland County.

11 glamorous pictures from the royal couple's dinner party!
Victoria's silver dress, Silvia's emeralds - and the King's James Bond look. So was the party dinner at the Palace last night!
The heartwarming welcome greeted the guests. That's probably what made the strongest impression during the hours I spent at the Royal Palace last night.
The royal family received them, all 178, on the giant carpet (big as a three-roomer!) In Lovisa Ulrika's dining room, one of the Palace's corner rooms and the place where they usually have private lunches.
- Good evening! WEL-come, said Crown Princess Victoria with emphasis on the first syllable, and next to it stood the Queen, dressed in love-red lace, and made each one feel seen. Her special talent!
Film director Ruben Östlund charmed everyone and Prince Daniel got to talk sports with Sweden's team captain in football, evour Andreas "Granen" Granqvist. The question is who was the most starstruck?
This year's Sweden Dinner was the seventh in the order and guests came from all 21 counties (escorted by "their" governors). That they have just been selected is because they have done something extra good for Sweden.
As a thank-you, they got this whole evening at the Royal Palace and the King and queen had thought of everything, from the wine selection to the music: on the way up the mighty stone staircase, the guests enjoyed a brass trio.
Svensk Damtidning was with part of the beginning this usually closed party and the atmosphere in the White Sea Hall was so high that the famous ceiling ceiling almost lifted. The crystal glasses clanged and the king received resounding applause for his spontaneous speech.
Tonight's menu was signed by court restaurateur Stefano Catenacci.
This the king said in his speech:
- We want to draw attention to some of all those who do so much good for Sweden. But we also want to give you the chance to meet each other. And now you are here!
- You are police officers and professors. Entrepreneur and football player. Directors and rescue officers, and everything in between. Yes, it's a huge spread and breadth. Both professionally and geographically. But one thing you all have in common. You are our guests and you are very warmly welcomed!

The queen beamed in red and the crown princess in silver. Football hero Andreas Granqvist was one of the guests at the big Swedish dinner.
The royal couple invited to the seventh Sweden dinner yesterday. Has it become a popular event?
- It is a form of representation dinner that was introduced in 2013 when the king had been on the throne for 40 years, says Johan Tegel, information officer at the court.
- For Sweden dinner, the royal couple invites representatives from each county together with the governor, so there will be a large geographical spread.
With the dinner, the royal family wants to draw attention to people who have made significant efforts and this year there were 178 guests at the tuxedo dinner. Some of those who greeted the royal family was football hero Andreas Granqvist who represented Skåne.
The queen was dressed in a red dress with lace at the sleeves and the crown princess wore a silvery white long dress with bare arms and ruffles in the skirt.
- Silvia wears a traditional dress that we are used to seeing her in, says Monika Kichau, a stylist who participates in SVT's "Go’kväll", among other things.
- Hair and makeup are very good and not everyone can wear red lace as good as the queen.
The dresses represent tradition and innovation, Monika thinks, and you can clearly see that two generations are meeting.
- Victoria's dress is really a top and a skirt and comes from the H&M Conscious Collection from this year, says Monika Kichau.
- I think Victoria challenges the boundaries a little, she is very good-looking in silver and the dress is a little 70s in the style with ruffles a little everywhere. With shoes in silver gray metallic, it becomes very cool, I have not seen this style on her before and I think it breathes a little disco, says Monika who also thinks it is good that the crown princess shows the way with sustainable design.
This year, Prince Carl Philip or Princess Sofia were not present at the Swedish dinner. They are at Capri to attend the wedding of Carolina Pihl and Gunnar Eliassen.
Those who traveled to Stockholm from Dalarna couldn't meet Princess Sofia, originally from Älvdalen?
- No, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia have private commitments, says Johan Tegel..
Both the royal couple and the crown princess couple have had a hectic week. The king has been to Malmö, the queen has taken the first spade to Ersta hospital and together they have opened Folke Bernadotte's bridge among other things. They have also been to a dinner in the City Hall.
Victoria and Daniel have been to Denmark on a three-day visit.
Neither Prince Carl Philip nor Princess Sofia have been seen many times since last summer and have only five commitments in the royal house's calendar this fall.
Is it normal to skip a Sweden dinner?
- It is the king and queen who invite to this dinner and also the Crown Princess couple is participating, says Johan Tegel.
- The other members of the royal family participate as much as possible.

Let us hope Minister Linde had some good suggestions, although His Majesty didn't look all too happy.
