Foto:LLUVIA PARAMO The history of the escultórica head of Prince de Asturias who is located to the entrance of the City council of Llanes, and to which a plate was placed to him yesterday, is the one of a nomad before finding mulberry.

The author of this bronze work is the Asturian escultor Jose Luis Fernandez, author of the statuette of the Goya prizes of the Academy of Cinema and the Gold Apple, award that annually grants the Center Asturian of Madrid. When Fernandez made this head, Sabino Fernandez Field, then head of the House of S.M. the King, missed in her frunce characteristic of entrecejo of S.A.R. Prince Felipe; the escultor made a head new and it gave this one to him to Deaf Cosme, president of the Asturian Center of Madrid.

Deaf person wanted that the bust was for Porrúa, its native town, and the Llacín donated to the association porruanal culture. But after a time, and when seeing that the sculpture was not exposed in the locality, Deaf Cosme asked the reason. The answer that it obtained from a member of the association, according to the own Deaf Cosme, was that "how a republican town was going to have the bust of the Prince in its more representative building".

For this reason, the statue was donated by the town of Porrúa the City council of Llanes, where it has found his place. The mayoress of the municipality, Dolores Alvarez Campillo, indicated yesterday, that the sculpture is "in a place to be seen and enjoyed by all the neighbors" since she governs a city council in which she must represent all, they are republican or monarchic. The mayoress expressed, also, her desire from which prince Felipe can come at some moment to see the bust, "mainly now, by the bond that unites to him with Asturias".

The Prince of Asturias expressed today, during the meeting with the representatives of the American Chamber of Trade in Spain, his solidarity to the American people who were affected by the hurricane Kathrina.

In the first hearing of Don Felipe, after his return to the Palace of La Zarzuela, after his stay in Mallorca and Asturias, he received the directors of the Chamber, whose main aim is to favour the implantation of Spanish companies in the United States.

The delegation that was received by the Prince was presided over by Jaime Malet, who invited the heir to the throne to visit some of their associate companies in the United States.

The Prince of Asturias, Felipe de Borbón, will come tomorrow in the evening to Baiona (Pontevedra) to take part, during the weekend, in the Trophy XX Prince of Asturias Corners Rolex-great Prize Citroën C6, as have confirmed to Europa Press sources of the Monte Real Club of Yachts of Baiona, organizer of the event.
The Prince, who will be lodged in Baiona's Inn, will take part in the ditch on board of the ship 'Cam', patroneado habitually for Fernando León, who will compete in the class IMS 500 in the field of ditches at Vigo.
According to sources of the organization, he is foreseen that a helicopter gathers the Prince on Saturday morning it to move Madrid, where he would be present at a food, and of return, ' there would be the possibility that the King Don Juan Carlos was accompanying it '.

The Prince of Asturias received this morning a representation of the Club of Excellence in Sustainability, presided over by Juan Alfaro. The Club, which was created by diverse companies among them Siemens, Adecco, Cepsa, ENDESA, Auna, La Caixa, Renfe, Telefónica Móviles and Unión Fenosa, among others, bet by a sustainable development regarding economic, social and environmental aspects.

The merits to be king


From a discreet institutional position, the Prince prepares himself for the succession. El Pais has reflected about the obstacles that he will have to face.

Little by little, Don Felipe is assuming institutional responsibilities, although still of modest visibility. Most of the Spaniards still do not know what style and what ideas the Prince can contribute with. He has always known that he will have to conquer the inheriting position, as well as the affection and respect of his countrymen, in a particularly difficult moment.


After finishing his academic education, in the spring of 1995, the Prince met the Spanish press in Washington to talk about his plans for the future and about some of issues at that time. Don Felipe showed then a spontaneity that surprised the journalists, and the declarations were controversial, because of some references to political corruption (a subject of great impact at that moment in Spain), which were interpreted by some journalists as an exculpatory of the conduct taken by the government of that time. The Prince tied the climate of political scandal with the multiplying effect of mass media. His words were received with violent critics in some sectors (it was not something that the prince of a country he was going to reign should have said, and plus he had spent too much time outside Spain). When leaving GeorgetownUniversity, Don Felipe suddenly understood that his way as a Crown Prince would not be the same calm stroll enjoyed by the members of other royal houses.

In the same interview given in the US capital, the Prince already said that he was conscious that he would have to conquer the throne, to adapt himself to the needs of the citizens of his time; and since then, this has probably been the basic principle of his conduct.

What other ideas have influenced the Prince, during these years? Which are his points of view on the problems that frighten the society? What kind of king can we hope? Officially, the Prince does not have any ideology. He knows the constitutional limits and he has always pronounced himself as a great admirer of the communion reached during the reign of Don Juan Carlos, between Crown and Society. His role demands from him the respect to the ideas of all and to privately keep his own thoughts, although it’s undeniable that the Prince has his own ideas.

The work agenda
His collaborators say that the ideas of the Prince are reflected in his agenda of work. Under that prism, the agenda of Don Felipe since the end of his time school has consisted in crossing all the Spanish independent communities with messages in support of integration and representing Spain in numerous institutional acts abroad, mainly in Latin America.

The Prince has, of course, ideas; ideas that he discreetly debates with his intimate circle of friends and, sometimes, with his family and some political leaders of greatest confidence. But he has been educated (and he ended up realising) that his most valuable idea is the one "of maintaining a opened panel of thought, a position of constant ample debate, without committing himself with concrete options", as it was expressed by a source of the Royal House. Don Felipe has been educated in an environment of tolerance, and sharing five minutes of conversation with him is enough to conclude that he knows how to understand all the points of view and to put himself in the shoes of his interlocutor.

Of the set of conversations maintained for the elaboration of this news article, we could extract a series of principles "almost genetically inherited" (according to one of his collaborators), which conforms the foundation of the Prince’s thoughts:
- the Monarchy will be what the Spaniards decide that it should be;
- his obligation is to maintain the life of the Crown, and to give his son the throne that he receives from his father. But he knows that the monarchic institution is undergoing a deep evolution. We’re facing times of change and any institution that can not understand that is condemned to disappear;
- his role will be the one that the current Constitution defines;
- Spain is a nation, the Spanish nation is called Spain;
- a rooted familiar sense; he has a traditional concept regarding the importance of the familiar nucleus;
- he has been educated, partly due to his military formation, on the base of personal discipline and sense of obligation.

A consolidated system

Carrying this frame of values and principles, the Prince will have at some moment to conquer not only the affection of the citizens, but his will to effectively maintain the King as the Head of State. In the past, the throne has been speculated as the relief to reframe the form of State. With the course of the time, that possibility has practically disappeared. The republican option only figures between the objectives of some minority political parties, and even in these cases it’s treated as an almost rhetorical intention.

This one is the impression was got with some people consulted for this article.

"The Monarchy is a model very seated in Spain. Outside Spain the Crown is a recognized institution of modern Spain" (Rodrigo Rato, director of the International Monetary Fund). "The Spanish Monarchy is the most solid and respected in Europe" (Miquel Roca, constitutional expert, ex- deputy and ex- Secretary General of Democratic Convergence of Catalonia). "In a country with very little passion for the unity symbols, the Monarchy is a value of determining reference" (Manuel Marín, president of the Congress of the Deputies). "The Monarchy is not an episode that begins and ends with Juan Carlos. I do not detect nor a spying of republican strength, I have never seen it in my organization" (Cándido Méndez, General Secretary of the General Union of Workers). "It is the institution that represents the excellence of what Spain is today" (Jaume Matas, president of the Balearic Community).

The president of Portugal, Jorge Sampaio, explains his vision on the role of the Monarchy, from the point of view of interests of a neighbour of Spain: "We want institutional stability in Spain. The unity of Spain is a feeling that we have. The Monarchy is a guarantee of the Spanish unity. I’m not saying that it is the only one, but it’s a guarantee of unity. It concerns us very much that Spain works well".

The entailment of the institutional role of the Monarchy with the unity of Spain appears in repeated forms, whenever the future of the Crown is contemplated. This one is going to be, without any doubt, one of the great challenges of Don Felipe. The Royal House does not feel very comfortable in the role that some people (urged by the present territorial tensions) want to point give it, as a guarantee of national integrity. It’s not the case that it doesn’t believe in that value, but it doesn’t want the exclusive responsibility of its defence. In general terms, the style of this Royal House is the one of avoiding protagonism; even more when we’re talking about State questions of the very great relevance, mainly when we’re talking about subjects that correspond to the scope of political decision.

According to Rato, "there is no single institution that represents in solitaire the unity of Spain; luckily we create that in Spain". "Among the agents that represent the unity of Spain, the Crown has a very special role, but there are also General Cortes of other many public and also private institutions".

Roca notices that "it would be a great error trying to give the Crown a special role in the future, just because Spain is deepening the autonomic State". "Trying that in the future would be counter-productive. The Monarchy assumes no role of mediating, conciliator or similar things. Before any kind of political instability", adds Roca, "what must be offered is the stability of the institution".

The Catalan nationalist stressed that "for Catalonia, a Monarchy is much more advisable than a president of Republic, who has to respond before conjuncture majorities and is interested in catching the vote of the majorities".


A difficult role for the future

Stability is also the great contribution of the Monarchy, according to an outstanding financial leader, who he prefers not to be mentioned. Stability is necessary for the progress, and therefore it’s difficult to obtain with a president of Republic, in country naturally inclined to generate figures of ample consensus. "For the economicestablishment, the democracy has been a source of stability and confidence, thanks to the Constitution and the Monarchy. Our political system, of relative majorities, is not designed for stability. The Monarchy contributes with an extra stability to it, and that is essential for the economic activity. This is still more important in a moment when both the major political parties are setting apart, and the society is dividing itself". Once the stability is guaranteed, according to this criterion, "the Monarchy could survive in a federal system, within its role of balance of powers".

The Prince of Asturias does not conceive, of course, his circumscribed future role to the institutional function of balance of powers. When Don Felipe thinks about the future challenges of a monarch, he also thinks about an active role in subjects like immigration, the cultural shock, the social adaptation to the scientific development or the ecological risks. In fact, in a time of changes, it’s difficult to anticipate what service can play the future King, especially when not even the time of the succession is foreseen. But meanwhile the Prince is prepared to respond, basically, to what is requested from himself. "Today the role of Crown", says Rato, "is more tied to the endorsement of the image of Spain in the world, to impel the image of a creative and dynamic Spain in all scopes ". Miquel Roca thinks that "the future King is asked to support, but nothing else". "He must not obstruct", he adds, "he does not have to play a role in favour of anybody, but nobody should interpret that he is against either ".

A long way

Until that moment arrives, many years can pass, during which the Prince faces the risk of deteriorating his image in the development of a clear and little useful function before the eyes of the citizens. For that reason, the main obsession at the moment in the palace of La Zarzuela is to maintain him occupied, to progressively transfer competitions and responsibilities to him, without decreasing, at the same time, the authority of the King. "He is an employee of this house, a worker to whom he gives suitable uses", says a civil employee of the Royal House. The truth is that the Prince is occupied: he spends hours in his office, working with his father, he discusses the present problems with people of different scopes and he makes numerous trips of representation. The problem is to be able to give him visibility and sense of utility to that activity. And for it, many ideas have been suggested, like looking for some type of function in social areas or endorsement to the family. But almost all the suggestions crash with the risk of crossing the delicate margin of the political controversy.

Manuel Marín is helping the Royal House to look for the Prince some tie mission to the Congress, like hander of the popular sovereignty. "It is good that the Crown and the Parliament collaborate more frequently", he says. And Enrique Iglesias, president of the Inter-American Development Bank and future secretary of Latin American Summits, suggests a greater responsibility for the Prince in the relations with Latin America. "He knows very well what happens in Latin America. He is an informed person who knows very well the social imbalances of Latin America and that, of course, defends the interests of Spain in that region". "I believe that he would be very happy in extending the presence of the Crown in everything they bridges the communication between Spain and Latin America".

In the international field, Jorge Sampaio also invites the Prince to develop an area of special relations with Portugal, a scope that, although logically corresponding to the Government, requires a different attention from other diplomatic agents, for geographic and historical reasons. The most important thing to the people in charge of his agenda is that he avoids giving the impression that the Prince is strolling. The future of the Monarchy is probably seen more threatened by the errors that can be committed in the image of the members of the royal family, than in the rupture or republican challenges. "The threats against the Prince can come more from his own behaviour than from external forces", considers Candido Méndez. Manuel Marín agrees with that criterion: "the greatest risk for the Monarchy in the future would be that the royal family behaved like other less exemplary royal families. Has anybody ever seen queen Elisabeth of England expressing an emotion?". Jaume Matas believes that, as the enthronement approaches, the sensationalist press will increase its interest for the private life of the Prince. "But that is not the most important thing", he adds, the popular answer is what counts and it is there that he has to take care of". To gain the heart of the Spaniards, the scandals, the absences at the times when his presence is required, the coldness and the distance can have a much more lethal effect for the future King than the manifestations against the Monarchy.

The scope of acceptance is very well noticeable. "When the Constitution was approved, the King yielded most of his powers in the popular sovereignty", explains Roca. "The popular sovereignty decided on the parliamentary Monarchy as government form. Therefore, it would not be fair to say that the Monarchy is only hereditary; it has much of a contractual agreement ". The rest, the affection and the recognition of the Spaniards, is something that (as he himself often says) he has to conquer.

Candido Méndez says that his father, an old republican and unionist, always showed in imminent place of his house a photo with the King and he was proud of that photo, because he got along with the King, in spite of his own political ideas. During many years, that one has been, obviously, the key for the coexistence between the Crown and the citizens, perhaps the key to the coexistence among the Spaniards.

When Don Felipe was born, on January 30th 1968, his father was a stranger to the orders of Franco that very few wanted to see as King. Many less had bet than the boy would ever reign. Almost 38 years later, another heir will be born who, can be either a man or woman, but will have cleared the way towards the throne buy then.

Elsa, I agree the two articles from El Pais were very intersting and they point out some of the things that I have sometimes mentioned about the very different challenges facing this Crown Prince and Princess versus other Crown Princes and Princesses, and how that impacts how certain behaviors or habits that are ok or acceptable in other houses are not in the Spanish house--particularly any indications of extravagence are very much frowned upon by the Spanish.

The airport of Peinador became paralyzed yesterday at night. They were the nine and the Prince landed in the terminal in a flight coming from Madrid. Thank you for the article, Elsa. I found the article very interesting but slightly disturbing and I wonder if some of the Spanish folks on this forum can comment. It has seemed to me that, especially since the challenge to the government many years ago when the opposition temporarily took over the Cortes, that Juan Carlos has developed into an almost larger than life personality as the King. He seems to relish meeting and entertaining people, mixing varous segments of society and to have enormous respect from many sectors of Spanish society for his political and social saavy. There is a certain "authority" the King has. CP Felipe, on the other hand, seems a more anxious personality than his father; less at ease with people and the press, despite the fact that he certainly interacts on numerous occasions with the Spanish populace and shows great sensitivity toward people. In addition, while I frequently observe CP Felipe attending functions with his father, it is his father who is in charge. I don't see as much of the reverse as I would expect at this point in CP Felipe's training -- where JC is occasionally attending something "chaired" by Felipe. These are simply observations of mine -- I am in no way passing judgment on the jobs they do because I think they are both fine people insofar as I can tell that. I am curious to know others' perceptions of the job Felipe is doing, what the public sentiment is about him, whether you think he will effectively follow his father's reign?

To try to explain how it works the politics in Spain is difficult enough, we are a complicated country, with more than 40 million inhabitants, a long history behind and a complicated enough XXth century (monarchies, republics, civil war, dictatorship,terrorism, independentismos ...). I believe that nobody knows really what is going to happen in a future, but I imagine that ultimately everything will depend on that the people do well their work.

I am going to try to give you my opinions on parts, to be able to explain better:

-The whole world knows that the Prince has a very good formation, and that is prepared to assume activities of importance. But in the countries of the XXIst century to make understand to the people in general his work is difficult. The people are in the habit of remaining with the most frivolous part of the things (the dinners, the nice garments ...) and the moments of work are not seen so much. But I have read many journalist articles dedicated to the politics, and they all have the same impression ...he is a very prepared person, who is interested for the things, which it informs about everything and about that he is conscious of that his position must gain it day after day with his work and that it is not easy.

- The Prince is evident that ithe does not have the way of belonging to his father, but though he is a calmer and shy person also he has certain captivation. In this sense, the whole world thinks that the marriage has sat him well, always he was near the people, but probably now he it is more.
The press is another topic, depends also on the type of press, the most serious and the least serious. They have been years questioning his life and partly it is normal that this a bit tired. Now to his wife they it are not becoming precisely easy either, and I imagine that now his worry is to protect his baby.

- On what you comment of his acts with the King. The King is the Chief of the State, to any act that the united two come, the Prince will have to be on the second plane, it would not be logical that the King was accompanying the Prince. Besides, only they come together to acts where it is indispensable (Chiefs' of State vitsits, national festivities ...); I imagine that in these questions the safety also gives the orders. The King is a figure of very much weight, respected by his work and with enough good political international relations. The Prince has to go acquiring it little by little, his trips abroad every time are more, he has been visiting the countries of the European Union, and represents Spain in all the captures of possession of praise Latin-American presidents. In relation with this, some journalist has commented that can be that the Prince acquires more protagonism in the Latin-American Summit that in October is celebrated in Spain. He has visited also the different Spanish provinces.
How I have said often it is difficult to make come to the people this work, but I imagine that it happens in all the countries with monarchies. La Zarzuela has wanted to prevent it from seeming that the Prince devotes himself not to do anything and to expect to happen to his father, because of it they have been giving him little by little more activities. The Royal Spanish House is in the habit of avoiding the frivolous acts, and seeks for acts political, economic, cultural...
The wedding of the Prince has given him a major protagonism, though the indisputable protagonist is Letizia. In this matter they have done it well, with the time I have realized it. At first I did not like that Letizia was not making anything alone, but I was understanding that she still had to learn many things and adapt to a new complicated life, where failures cannot be committed (she cannot limit to smile for the photos, must know with whom she speaks, about what she speaks, to do the suitable questions ...). Now I think that they have been intelligent. The Prince is the inheritor and future chief of state, and the princess his wife, she must not gain an excessive protagonism over her husband, because it would derive in the levity, and it would harm the public and political image of the couple. The whole pressure of press that existed on Letizia has been canalized by them in the two, that way they have showed them as a good team, and have given to know the national and international work of the Prince.


This one is my opinion, more or less it coincides with what explains in the article, not if I could have explained some things a bit better. The Prince must continue working since he it has done, and I believe that little by little they are going to be giving him acts of major importance. And he will have to wait what happens with the Spanish politics, and to be prepared for everything. For much that works, he is not going to avoid the critique that is habitual towards the figures of power, and any more when it is a question of the monarchy. While he continues acting well and working well, the things will not depend on him but on the politicians and on the citizens, and I believe it that it is something unforseeable, since it it is the own history.

Thank you very much for your feedback, Lula. I certainly appreciated your post very much, and I'm sure my opinion is shared by everybody.

The wedding of the Prince has given him a major protagonism, though the indisputable protagonist is Letizia. In this matter they have done it well, with the time I have realized it. At first I did not like that Letizia was not making anything alone, but I was understanding that she still had to learn many things and adapt to a new complicated life, where failures cannot be committed (she cannot limit to smile for the photos, must know with whom she speaks, about what she speaks, to do the suitable questions ...). Now I think that they have been intelligent. The Prince is the inheritor and future chief of state, and the princess his wife, she must not gain an excessive protagonism over her husband, because it would derive in the levity, and it would harm the public and political image of the couple. The whole pressure of press that existed on Letizia has been canalized by them in the two, that way they have showed them as a good team, and have given to know the national and international work of the Prince.

I agree with you and, as I have already pointed out several times, this is a crucial aspect. I understand that the folks on the boards would prefer seeing Letizia by herself, at least once in a while, but one can not forget the very peculiar situation which the royal couple have to deal with. Spain is simply not Denmark or Holland, where the CP can take the throne for granted. In Spain, before Letizia proving that she knows how to stand on her own, it is her husband who needs the attention of the press and the respect of the public opinion. In this sense, Letizia accompanying her husband is actually much more useful for the Monarchy, than if she requested her own agenda. And as you have pointed out, now it's Letizia who catches great part of the spotlights, even if she takes a background position and, by standing next to her husband, she’s playing a much useful role than if she tried to seek protagonisms. They surely work as a team, and that is what really matters... to serve Spain and the Monarchy in the best way possible...
