The family of Doña Letizia adds themself to real Christmas

Everything very traditional. Tonight the real family will share a supper of Christmas Eve in which she will not lack the typical menu; consomé , turkey, sea bream, lamb, turrones and cava. Like every year, in the hall the deprived residence of the Kings a table will be arranged bufet with different plates. The newness of these Christmases will be the presence of Doña Letizia and also from her relatives, concretely her maternal grandparents, Francisco Rocasolano and Enriqueta Rodriguez, who reside in Alicante but they move to Madrid in the occasion of the celebrations to pass them with his daughter, Dove. This year, the Rocasolano marriage, their daughter and her granddaughters will share some of the celebrations with the real family and this way the princess of Asturias will be able to have meeting to all her family.

The Dukes of Palm will move from Barcelona to Madrid to add themselves to the celebration of the Zarzuela and later they will travel to Vitoria to pass the rest of the celebrations with the Urdangarin family. The Dukes of Lugo also will be tonight in the residence of the Kings, and the 26, as every year they have predicted to travel to Soria to share days with the Marichalar family. The mother and the brothers of the Duke of Lugo celebrate every year a mass in memory of Amalio Marichalar, father of the husband of Doña Elena, who died in Soria the 26 of December of thirty years ago.

The traditional stay of the real family in Baqueira already let be it some years ago. The agglomeration of skiers in the tracks and mainly in the facilities of the valley makes the sport practice difficult, and as much the Kings, as the Princes prefer to enjoy the practice of the ski at another time of the year.

The one of today will be a supper of special Christmas Eve. In the toasts it will not lack one by the next maternity of infant Cristina, nor another one by the presence of Doña Letizia. Next year, the Dukes of Palm will go to the Zarzuela with their four children and, perhaps, the princes of Asturias share with their family their opening like parents.

Spanish heels stir royal baby gossip
Nigel Bowden, Malaga
trans.gif
NI_MPU('middle');

WHEN Spain’s Prince Felipe married the almond-eyed former news reader Letizia Ortiz last May, the heir to the throne must have thought he had at last rid himself of the media circus that dogged his free-wheeling bachelor days.

Yet just seven months into the marriage Felipe, 36, and Letizia — now the Princess of Asturias — again find their most intimate details to be the subject of intense speculation.

Spain is waiting with bated breath for a royal baby, and while Felipe’s siblings have been producing progeny in the plentiful proportions of Spanish tradition — the Infanta Cristina has just announced she is pregnant with her fourth child — Felipe and Letizia, 32, are yet to get off the mark.

A host of reasons has been offered for the delay, from rumours of fertility treatment to more outlandish theories — including the princess’s trademark stilettos.

A new book, Los Tacones de Letizia (Letizia’s High Heels), is climbing the Spanish bestseller lists. In it Jaime Penafiel, its author and a respected royal commentator, claims that the heels could be at the root of the Spanish succession problem.

So as not to look dwarfed by her 6ft 5in husband, Letizia, who is more than a foot shorter, nearly always wears heels. Cobblers to the rich and famous have told Penafiel that Letizia’s designer stilettos, some of them more than 4in, are about as high as safety will allow without the wearer toppling over. And the anatomical stress is feared to be harming Letizia’s reproductive capability.

Penafiel’s book claims the princess has learnt to stand with her legs slightly apart, helping spread her weight to counter any ill effects. “The prince and princess are both devout Catholics and I have it on good authority that they are trying for a child,” he claimed last week. “This delay is most unusual.”

The princess is also rumoured to have had fertility tests at the private Dexeus clinic in Barcelona and at the Jimenez Diaz Foundation in Madrid. There is even talk of the need to reverse an operation on her fallopian tubes, done during her postgraduate student days in Mexico.

The royal palace has denied all the allegations, but a number of web pages devoted to the secrets of the couple’s boudoir have sprouted on the internet. El Mundo, a Spanish daily, carries jokey references to their inability to produce an heir in a cartoon strip entitled Alicia, the Governess of Letizia.

It is all grist to the mill for the prince, whose previous girlfriends caused consternation in royal circles. He had enjoyed dalliances, among others, with Eva Sannum, a Norwegian underwear model, and Isabel Sartorius, an art expert whose playboy father’s party trick was to down a shot of vodka and then eat the glass.

Even Ortiz, a divorcée with a similarly raunchy past, was initially controversial. But the Catholic church overlooked her first marriage on the grounds that it took place in a register office, and the Spanish quickly took to her, breathing sighs of relief as the popular prince at last settled down.

Since their wedding, Letizia has accompanied Felipe on official visits to America, Mexico, a number of South American countries, Jordan and the Czech Republic. Apart from learning the ins and outs of royal etiquette, she has dutifully learnt to ski and sail, the two favourite pastimes of the Spanish royals.

Although Britain’s two most noted mergers with the Spanish royal family were hardly successful — in 18 years of marriage Henry VIII only had one daughter with Catherine of Aragon, and his daughter Mary failed to produce any children with Prince Philip of Spain — the House of Bourbon has been fecund, with only Fernando VII failing to produce a male heir.

Letizia does not fight shy of the subject, and when asked about pregnancy during a public engagement in Barcelona she replied: “Most definitely not! But when I am, you can have the story, exclusive.”

The palace has denied any connection between high heels and the absence of pram wheels. “The Princess of Asturias wears high heels because they suit her,” a spokesman said. “I can’t comment on any pregnancy or lack thereof.”

What does this got to do with anything?

God, those two are married only for seven months.... let them be a while before starting a family! Like any couple would like to be.... (Is Princess Mary facing the same pressure? Poor girls....)

Unfortunately, that is their purpose: To produce an heir so that the dynasty can continue; and the power can remain within the bloodline. It's terrible but that is the real purpose of a royal consort. This was their sole function until recent times.

The British should just focus on their own royals. The British certainly provide more headlines (especially scandalous ones) than the Spanish ones do. Maybe there's a lull in Britain right now. After the holidays, P. Harry should be back to his clubhopping and partying ways to give the journalists across the pond more work to do.

Yes, you are right. But you know the press is the press, they treat also international "news" :(

LETIZIA'S FIRST CHRISTMAS AS A CROWN PRINCESS

22 DECEMBER 2004

The Spanish royals have marked the entry into their ranks of the new crown princess by sending out a Christmas card with all their portraits on it.

Princess Letizia, who married Crown Prince Felipe in a lavish May ceremony, has taken to her new role with relish: the former newscaster was already accustomed to the cameras when her engagement was announced, and any lingering signs of nerves disappeared as the Spanish people took her into their hearts.

The prince and princess have had a travel-packed year but will be spending the festive season in traditional style with Felipe's family. The royals have already kicked off their Christmas in their usual way, by gathering at the La Zarzuela Palace outside Madrid to celebrate the Infanta Elena's 41st birthday on December 20.

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia are joined this year by all three of their children plus their five grandchildren for the holiday period. Spirits will be running particularly high amongst the close-knit family after the news that the Infanta Cristina is expecting her fourth child.

Well, I think Mary does have some pressure too, although we hear less about it. What's wrong if they want to wait before having children?!

Letizia's shoes in la vanguardia. There are too tall?!?! I think that her feet are suffering.

Yes, they look very tall but she always wear him like that. I just read that is one of protocol demands... and she always look very confertabtle with him. I have some that have 10 cm and with the habit they became comfortable.

That's true. When I first started wearing heals that were three inches, I was very uncomfortable and uneasy. But, now, several years later, they are as comfortable as my running shoes. I put them and walk around all day without feeling a thing. The important thing is to wear good shoes of high quality that fit you well.

I believe these weren't posted. From Felipe and Letizia's visit to the patronate of students in Madrid.
