King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia will make a State visit to Algeria, according to the announcement made yesterday by the president of that country, Abdelaziz Buteflika, when talking to the journalists, at the end of a meeting of with Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. Although Queen Sofía was just a couple of days ago in Algiers, the visit of the Kings would be the second visit of official character ,since they traveled to that country in 1983. Most probably, it will occur during the last trimestre, so that it would take place in the same year as the one they made to Morocco, another great country of Magreb.
Yesterday, the Spanish and Algerian Governments made public an extensive official notice, on which Zapatero confirmed that, within the revision of the Power Plan, that will start before the 30th of June, his Government will give the qualification of "type A" (i.e. high-priority) to the Medgaz project, a gas pipe-line that will unite Algeria and Spain, so the construction shall begin in July 2006. In addition, Madrid and Algiers will together form teams, to fight terrorism in a more effective way.

Queen Sofia get a warm royal welcome from Princess Lalla Salma:

The friendly relations between Spain and her southern neighbours are obviously going from strength to strength, with Queen Sofia paying her second visit to Morocco in under a month. King Mohammed's wife, Princess Lalla Salma, warmly embraced her European visitor when she arrived at Tetouan Airport on Thursday afternoon.

Later that day the red-haired princess, dressed in a spectacular silver kaftan with ornate detailing, hosted a lavish dinner in honour of her guest. And the fact she has taken charge of such a high-profile event is just further evidence of the Moroccan royal household's determination to modernise.

The 26-year-old, who married King Mohammed in 2002, is the first wife of a Moroccan monarch to be photographed or seen publicly. A qualified computer engineer, she has taken centre stage at numerous official functions, including last year's visit from the Belgian royals.

The North African country has not always enjoyed such strong ties with Spain, however. Indeed the visit made by King Juan Carlos and his wife just a few weeks ago was the first in over 25 years. On that occasion Sofia had hoped to visit the historic city of Tetouan, but in the end there wasn't time in her hectic schedule.

Lalla Salma wasn't about to let her friend go disapponted, though, so the two women arranged to meet up again this week. And it seems the two countries are set to take their friendship one step further, as Spanish and Moroccan politicians are currently hammering out plans to build a tunnel under the Straits of Gibraltar.

I applaud both of these women. This is just another reason why I feel that women should rule the world. We rock!

The Kings will preside over a sober act at the Forest of the Absentees, in tribute to the victims
Not to do anything that the victims would not want and sobriety. These are the two rules that have prevailed from Moncloa, to the acts for the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 11-M. The main act will be constituted by five minutes of silence and a floral offering (that will take place on Friday the 11th, at the Forest of the Absentees, Park of El Retiro of Madrid), presided by TRH the Kings, in presence of the head of the Executive, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, the president of the Community, Esperanza Aguirre, and the mayor of the city, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón.

After the first edition of the Television newscast, TVE has 10 lines of the Quijote, where well-known and anonymous people, will read 10 lines of the Cervantes' novel. Yesterday, King Juan Carlos was the first person to participate in that show, which commemorates to the fourth centenary of this masterpiece of Spanish Literature. In addition to KJC, we will also listen to the readings of writers like García Márquez, Almudena Grandes, Luis García Montero, Ignacio Ramonet, Jorge Edward, Carme Riera and Rosa Regás.

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia presided yesterday over the commemorations of the 75th anniversary of the Mutua Madrileña Automovilista, an act in which they have given the Medals of Honour of the Foundation. Don Juan Carlos emphasized in his speech the activities of its Medical Foundation - namely the collaboration with the Alzheimer Project of Queen Sofia's Foundation - which has the objective "to canalize an impulse to investigation, patronage to projects of healthcare and support for the formation, with the aim of helping those who have lost their health".

King Juan Carlos visited the basilica of Jesus de Medinaceli, in Madrid´s oldtown, on the occasion of the veneration of the Christ of Medinaceli, celebrated the first day of every month, and especially on March the first.
This religious tradition began in 1682, when the first congregation arrived to the basilica to adore this Jesus, and it has gone on until now.
People have been in line since Wednesday, to adore the image of the Jesus of Medinaceli, to kiss his feet, prey to him or participate in mass.
