The mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruíz-Gallardón, has announced that Queen Sofia will be the person in charge to preside over the Spanish delegation (100 people, among them the president of the government, Rodriguez Zapatero) that will travel to Singapur, on July 6th, to support the Olympic candidacy of Madrid 2012.

Where was Sofia on Friday that she didn't attend Prince Rainier's funeral with King Juan Carlos?

Spanish queen to lead Madrid 2012 delegation to key IOC meeting

The Associated Press
Updated: 1:14 p.m. ET April 15, 2005

Queen Sofia is expected to lead the Madrid delegation at the meeting in July to select the host city of the 2012 Olympics, the bid committee said Friday.

Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero already has agreed to travel to Singapore for the vote, and Madrid Mayor Alfredo Ruiz-Gallardon expressed "deep gratitude" for the royal family's support.

Madrid is competing against Paris, London, New York and Moscow. The winner will be selected by the International Olympic Committee on July 6.

The Spanish royal palace said Queen Sofia had offered to lead the delegation, but could not confirm that a final decision had been taken.

Earlier Friday, Mayor Ruiz-Gallardon appointed Real Madrid star Raul Gonzalez and five-time Tour de France champion Miguel Indurain among 13 bid "ambassadors."

Other athletes supporting Madrid include former tennis star Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, two-time world marathon champion Abel Anton and two-time Olympic handball bronze medalist Inaki Urdangarin, husband of Spain's Princess Elena.

Madrid, the only European city in the field which has never hosted the Olympics, says 70 percent of the proposed venues are already ready or in the process of being built.

Her agenda says she had no official dutty for that day, but perhaps she was preparing her trip to Chile, starting tomorrow April 18th, to attend the Summit on Microcredit for Latin America (which will gather more than 1000 experts from 600 institutions).
After a brief stay in Spain, to attend in Alcala de Henares the awards ceremony of the Cervantes Prize, Queen Sofía will travel to Mexico and Colombia, to participate in other three forums on microcredits.

from an article at elmundo.es.

Thanks, Marezdote, for the news.
Here's the translation for our friends:

Quote:
King Juan Carlos sent a telegram to the new Pope where, in his own and the Queen's name, he expressed the most sincere wishes "and an affectionate congratulation". "We pray to God so that he may encourage and illuminate you in your apostolic ministry, for the Good of Cristians and of all the nations and peoples of the Earth".
The King and Queen will preside over the Spanish delegation that will attend, next Sunday, at S. Peter's in the Vatican, the solemn proclamation of Benedict XVI.

from informativos.telecinco.es:

Evidentemente, no existe ningún rango mayor.

Translation:

The new image of Magneto, one of the classic Marvel’s comics, looks exactly the same as the only official photo of King Juan Carlos, in a uniform of Captain-general of the army.

The photo of the King and the one of the new Magneto that will be in the kiosks next summer, as part of the series «The Pulse: House Of M» are practically equal. In both cases, even one of the medals is hanged over the band. The two images share the scenary as well.

The photo of King Juan Carlos was taken by Alberto Schommer and thus has obviously copyright. On the Royal House’s webpage, this is the only photo in which Don Juan Carlos appears with the uniform of Captain-general of the army. Evidently, it doesn’t exist any higher rank.

The followers of Marvel’s comics are anxious for the new saga and its parallel universes. This Comic belongs to the series "What if…" or "What would happen if...", in which a young Magneto gets to be the King of the mutants.

The news has already echoed in some blogs as La cárcel de papel..
