It is about time they kiss in public. I think they palnned this so as to quit any rumors that they wern't serious. And get her into the public's good eye. The way the reporter said she looked more lovely then photographs of her. I am glad everything is working out for them. I hope they stay happy.

Anybody else notice Mary's freaky long arm in the top picture. Looks like one of the apes that drag their arms behind them. I know it is probally someone standing behind her or a camera trick, but I think it looks funny anyways.

The couple kissing in the inserted brown and white photo are Crown Prince Frederik's grandparents, HM King Frederik IX of Denmark and HM Queen Ingrid of Denmark, nee of Sweden. That certainly looks like some kiss! :)

Hi Mary Anne and Sylvia!

I think the kiss could have been staged as well, but they do look good together in the photo and they seem to be very happy, almost in a sickening sort of way. ....Just kidding!

Of course, they're happy-neither one of them has to go to work for a while! :P

They do look very happy. I hope he asks her soon. Theya ren't getting any younger. And I think she has done a lot to make herself over. She is learning his langueage, moved closer, and the only thing she needs to work on is hiding those pesky bras when she goes out. She seems like a nice person though.

Royal wedding? Nope, "it was just a kiss on the cheek'

Associated Press
Posted January 24 2003, 10:17 AM EST

COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- Denmark is abuzz with speculation of a royal wedding after the heir to the throne of Europe's oldest ruling monarchy was photographed giving his girlfriend a first public peck on the cheek.

But a palace spokesman, Soeren Haslund-Christensen, told The Associated Press on Wednesday: ``There is nothing in that kiss. It was just a kiss on the cheek.''

Crown Prince Frederik, 34, was snapped this weekend kissing his Australian girlfriend, Mary Donaldson, as they met in her hometown of Hobart, Tasmania.

Photos published in Monday's edition of the tabloid B.T. showed the couple giving each other a peck on the corner of the mouth, followed by a shot of Frederik turning around and laughing at the photographers.

Newspapers and celebrity magazines put the kiss on their front pages, and Denmark's biggest daily, Jyllands-Posten, concluded in an editorial: ``It can't almost get any closer: Denmark's next queen is called Mary.''

Frederik and Donaldson, 30, met during the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

She moved to Denmark in early 2002 to work with a Danish subsidiary of Microsoft Corp. and enrolled in intensive Danish language classes.

The couple have appeared together often at private events. They cannot appear at public events together unless they're engaged or married.

Last year, the palace confirmed for the first time that Frederik had a girlfriend. Earlier, the royal household refused to comment on what it called private matters.

A royal question: Is a kiss just a kiss?

AP - Denmark is abuzz again with rumours of a royal wedding after its Crown Prince Frederik was pictured giving his Australian girlfriend her first public peck on the cheek.

When Crown Prince Frederik was snapped kissing girlfriend Mary Donaldson, it set off a media frenzy and had royal watchers wondering if the 34-year-old future king was readying the country for impending matrimony.

Newspapers and celebrity magazines put the kiss on their front pages and penned columns opining about the nature of Frederik's supposed bride-to-be.

Denmark's biggest daily, Jyllands-Posten, concluded in an editorial this week: "It can't almost get any closer: Denmark's next queen is called Mary."

Some claim that Frederik's public peck for Donaldson was intentional - a way to tell the Scandinavian country of 5.3 million that she might be the next queen.

But a palace spokesman, Soeren Haslund-Christensen, denied such reports and rumours on Thursday.

"There is nothing in that kiss. It was just a kiss on the cheek," Haslund-Christensen told The Associated Press. "There is nothing new about this except for what the media (make up)."

Photos published in Monday's edition of the tabloid BT showed the couple giving each other a peck on the corner of the mouth, followed by a shot of Frederik turning around and laughing at the photographers.

"I will consider it an unofficial engagement announcement," said Henning Dehn-Nielsen, an historian and author of several books on the royal family, whose history can be traced back to 958.

Last year, the palace confirmed for the first time that Frederik had a girlfriend.

Earlier, the royal household refused to comment on what it called private matters.

Frederik and Donaldson, of Sydney, met during the 2000 Olympics, but the romance was kept quiet until a Danish magazine had the scoop in 2001.

The 30-year-old brunette moved to Denmark early last year to work with a Danish subsidiary of Microsoft Corp, and enrolled in intensive Danish language classes.

The couple have appeared together often at private events.

They cannot appear at public events together unless they're engaged or married.

In Australia, Frederik fuelled speculation by describing her as "my girlfriend" to a group of Danish reporters who had travelled to Hobart.

And over Christmas, Donaldson reportedly spent the holidays with the royal family. Before that, early last month, her father and stepmother visited the royal palace.

If Donaldson, dubbed "the perfect princess", weds the handsome and popular prince, she would become the first Australian to stand in line to become queen.

Any engagement must by formally approved by the government.

Frederik, a member of an elite Danish naval unit and an Arctic adventurer, was voted Dane of the year for the fifth time by the Berlingske Tidende newspaper's readers last month.

If there is a royal wedding, Donaldson won't be the first foreigner in Denmark's royal family.

Frederik's father, Prince Henrik, was born a Frenchman and his younger brother, Prince Joachim, married a British commoner in 1995 who became Princess Alexandra. And his grandmother, Queen Ingrid, was Swedish.

Photo of crown prince kissing girlfriend fuels Danish frenzy

FOREIGN STAFF

DENMARK is abuzz with new rumours of a Royal wedding after the heir to the throne of Europe’s oldest ruling monarchy was pictured giving his girlfriend a public peck on the cheek.

When Crown Prince Frederik was photographed this weekend kissing his Australian girlfriend, Mary Donaldson, it set off a Danish media frenzy. Royal watchers speculated that the coy kiss by Frederik, 34, as the couple met in her home town of Hobart, Tasmania, was a way of introducing his country to a future queen.

Denmark’s biggest daily, Jyllands-Posten, concluded in an editorial this week: "It almost can’t get any closer: Denmark’s next queen is called Mary."

But a palace spokesman, Soeren Haslund-Christensen, insisted: "It was just a kiss on the cheek. There is nothing new about this."

Photos published in the tabloid BT showed the couple giving each other a peck on the corner of the mouth, after which Frederik turned and laughed at the photographers.

"I will consider it an unofficial engagement announcement," said Henning Dehn-Nielsen, an historian and author of several books on the Danish Royal Family, whose history can be traced back to 958.

Prince Frederik and Ms Donaldson met during the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, but the romance was kept quiet until a Danish magazine revealed it in 2001.

Ms Donaldson, 30, moved to Denmark in early 2002 to work with a Danish subsidiary of Microsoft and enrolled in intensive Danish language classes.

Tassie a breath of fresh heir for prince
By ALISON RIBBON
28jan03

HE has spent almost three weeks in the place of his girlfriend's upbringing and Denmark's Crown Prince Frederik has enjoyed every second of it.

Not only has his Tasmanian girlfriend Mary Donaldson been with him for much of the trip, he has also participated in two of the things he loves most -- sailing and wine tours.

Prince Frederik, 34, spoke with The Mercury yesterday after his final event in the world Dragon class sailing championship at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania.

Mary had just been to see him by his boat Nanoq after she spent the day on the Derwent on the motor launch River Lodge, owned by the club's commodore, Robert Badenach.

Dressed in a striped top, sequined pants and a cap, the "princess-in-waiting" looked poised but restless as the Danish press gathered around her yet again.

She spoke with the wives of crew members as she waited for the prince to finish hosing off Nanoq.

Prince Frederik and Mary did speak with each other, but those hoping to see a royal embrace were disappointed. Except for a brief rubbing of shoulders as Mary left, there was no contact between the couple.

After Mary left, the prince said he realised his girlfriend of 2-1/2 years had grown up in a great environment.

"Certainly a good upbringing here," he said.

"Every Tasmanian I have met is nice.

"The mentality, the population, is all what I expected, but what exceeded my expectations was the food, the wine, the whole atmosphere."

Prince Frederik said he had been to Seven Mile Beach, to the top of Mt Wellington and to several wineries.

"I think your pinot noirs are special -- your wines and I had a good time together," he said with a wink.

"I have had a tremendous stay. The fact I have had a purpose for being here and the duration of the stay has let me get into a rhythm and I have appreciated that. You normally wouldn't spend this much time in one place."

Prince Frederik and his crew finished sixth overall at the championship, after coming in ninth yesterday.

"I am extremely happy with it," he said.

"I learned even more about sailing and boat handling because we had 14 or 15 races in only 20 days and you never really get that in Europe."

Prince Frederik said Tasmania had been a great place for the event.

"There are some very good conditions, some very tricky conditions," he said.

HI Jacqueline! Thanks for the article! Sequined pants??! Why on earth was she wearing sequined pants in the daytime( I am assuming that it was day)?

At least Fred enjoyed Tasmania and had positive things to say. :)

Hi Julia! Thanks for the article.

I do believe that sometimes a kiss is just a kiss. I can't say that we should all start thinking about fabrics for Mary's gown etc., but I do think that Fred's finally showing affection publicly for Mary certainly can't hurt her chances of becoming CP and the chances that an engagement could eventually be announced.

But, sometimes I also wonder if the kiss may have been intentional?

Hi Julia! I would certainly like to see the sequined pants. It's a bit hard to believe. Mary had been doing so well where her attire has been concerned in Tasmania-nothing too flashy and tacky.

I wonder what would have brought on the sequined pants?

Danes can't get enough of Tassie

03feb03

THE Danish media may have spent the past few weeks trailing Prince Frederik and Mary Donaldson in Hobart but they were stalking another Tasmanian at the weekend -- Premier, Jim Bacon.

As the Crown Prince of Denmark and his Tasmanian girlfriend left Hobart on Saturday, Mr Bacon was being besieged by the Danish media in Copenhagen.

On a promotional mission to Europe and the United States, he said the Danish media were hungry for information about Tasmania.

They had shown particular interest in a remark by the Crown Prince, who had been in Hobart to compete in the world Dragon class sailing championships and was shown the sights by Ms Donaldson.

"Prince Frederik commented that every Tasmanian he had met was nice and I told them that was no surprise at all," Mr Bacon said.

"I was certainly expecting the Tasmanian connection to be of some interest, but the level of curiosity, and the level of knowledge they already have about us, was well beyond my expectations."

Mr Bacon said the media in London and Copenhagen had a very positive view of Tasmania.

"I used the opportunity to paint the picture of Tasmania in the midst of very exciting times, talking of our natural and historic heritage and the economic development which is now taking place," he said.

"The royal news phenomenon appears to be every bit as big and important here [in Denmark] as we are used to and will do our tourism promotion efforts no harm at all.

"I was also able to remind them that a Danish character called Jorgen Jorgensen was transported to Van Diemens Land as a convict in 1826 and strides across the pages of our early history in large letters."

Mr Bacon leaves for Germany today.

Prince Frederik has gone to India on official business, while Ms Donaldson is believed to be headed for Denmark.

Human Interest
Media frenzy greets Bacon in Denmark
Monday, 3 February 2003

Premier Jim Bacon says he is at the centre of a media frenzy in Denmark after the visit to Tasmania by Crown Prince Frederik.

In Copenhagen as part of a three-week visit to Europe and the US, Mr Bacon said he had been besieged by the media.

"(The media) are hungry for information, wanting to know all we can tell them about the place where Crown Prince Frederik's Australian girlfriend comes from," he said.

The media had showed particular interest in a remark made by the Crown Prince in Hobart that every Tasmanian he had met was nice.

"I was certainly expecting the Tasmanian connection to be of some interest, but the level of curiosity - and the level of knowledge they already have about us - was well beyond my expectations," Mr Bacon said.

The London and Danish media seemed to have a positive picture of Tasmania. "The royal news phenomenon ... will do our tourism promotion efforts no harm at all," he said.

Mr Bacon spoke to the media about the Danish convict Jorgen Jorgensen, who was transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1826.

The Premier and his entourage, which includes his wife, Honey Bacon, and senior advisers, will travel to Germany today before heading to Geneva, where he will address the global summit on peace through tourism.

Prince Frederik and girlfriend Mary Donaldson flew from Hobart on Saturday after spending two weeks in the State. They are believed to have stayed at Freycinet Lodge last week.

NEW DELHI, India - Most first-time visitors to India make a point of seeing its main tourist attraction, the Taj Mahal — a world-famous monument to love.

But Denmark's Crown Prince Frederik left his Australian girlfriend, Mary Donaldson, behind during his six-day India tour and was too busy promoting Danish business to visit the Taj.

He drove through dusty villages on Monday to reach the 6-year-old Danisco factory outside the Indian capital to officiate at a groundbreaking ceremony for a new research and development laboratory. Danisco makes food flavorings and other ingredients.

Frederik, 34, said India is behind China in getting foreign direct investment from his country, and blamed the slow-moving Indian bureaucracy.

The prince wore a tie printed with white elephants, considered symbols of luck in India.

"It's not a coincidence that I'm wearing it in India," said the prince. "In my country, the symbol of a white elephant is very important and we even have a much revered 400-year-old Order of the White Elephant."

Frederik planned to do more Danish business promotion in India's financial capital, Bombay, then travel to the desert state of Rajasthan for relaxation.

"Next time I come here, I would like to go down to South India, trek in the lower Himalayas and see the Taj," he said.

But he didn't say whether he'd see the monument to romance with someone he loves — offering Danes no clue whether there will soon be a royal wedding.
