Frederik stolt over fjerdeplads

Nemlig »My Way« med Frank Berg, Søren Kaestel og Mads Christensen.

I've been wondering one thing...when foreigners marry into the royal family, like Alex/the person who's to marry Prince Albert/Mary, do these foreigners have to know how to speak their husband/wife's country's language? I mean, did ALex know how to speak Danish when she married Joachim, or did she learn as she went? I know she's good with languages. Does Mary Donaldson speak Danish? 'Cause she's from Australia, so does Frederik speak English with her? Or is she learning? Because she'd be Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, and they couldn't very well have a Danish-illiterate crown princess, now could they? Imagine how embarrassing it'd be for someone to say, "Hej, jag heter Erik," and for her to respond, "What does that mean?" (Hah, that was Swedish, but you get the point.) :woot:

Does Mary even speak Danish? Eh? Wouldn't it be "useful" with her being in the royal family, I mean she couldn't expect her nephews to understand much of her English...I mean Alex could translate, and the adults speak English, but she'd be surrounded with Danish well-wishers...a bunch of100% Danish people, you know, the people who don't understand a smidgen of Engelska. Hon pratar inte Danska...right?

Interesting question you pose, moosey50.

I think it's important that the future Queen (or Prince, Princess, whatever the case may be) of a country know the language of the country she (he) represents. If they don't know it, then they should learn it during the course of the relationship when things start to turn serious. And definitely when an engagement has been announced.

I remember it being a very big deal when Maxima gave her first speech in Dutch. Or even when Mathilde spoke Flemish, was it? instead of French, which a high number of Belgians speak.

Going back further, I'm sure Prince Henrik must've had to learn Danish (his native tongue is French) or Queen Sofia Spanish (born a princess of Greece).

Some of the other royals I can think of married into royal families from which countries they are from, like Sonja, Laurentien, Mette-Marit, Mathilde, Marilene, Annette, Ari Behn, Inaki, Jaime, etc.

But of course many are not native to the country they represent and in all cases I can think of they learned the language, adopted the religion, etc., like Sofia (became Catholic - or at least agreed to raise her children as such instead of Greek Orthodox), Maxima, Alexandra of Denmark, Henrik, Silvia and Marie-Chantal (religion and language, though not so good at speaking Greek).

So she doesn't speak Danish? Haha, Danish is like Swedish with hot potatoes in your mouth..I tried it once, I would've preferred to have had something to compare it to, but I can only assume it was true. Hahahaha...haha.hah.ha..yes. :woot:

Hmmm, which scandinavian country is the troll existencises connected with ?

If you know anything about the scandinavian countries at all - you know very well that the inhabitants of all those countries speak english so well - that some prefer to speak english when meeting with other scandinavians - for sure they are more than happy to excercise their english with every english speaking person they meet - people may live their full life as english speakers in those countries and still have no problems getting around there at all.

Prince Nikolai understands english - as this is the language between his parents - also the language of the grandparents he is living with - of course also of the rest of his immediate maternal family - whom he does spend time with.

Now - this summer quite some danes - that actually have spoken with Mary Donaldson - have confirmed to the danish media - that she by now speaks a nice upper class danish - not yet with the vocabulary of a long term resident - but well.

So she doesn't speak Danish?
If you had followed the danish media this summer - you would have found several articles - where persons who actually have spoken with Mary Donaldson - have confirmed that she speaks danish well by now :)

CP Frederik looks a little too grim in his pictures with Mary. If she was smart, she'd run back to those Tasmanian hills as fast as she could. Even the Tasmanian Devil will look good by comparison. It could be no woman will be right for this prince, or maybe Mary is the wrong one -- but something isn't right from looking at HIS pictures.

I don't think she looks plain in the above picture, but definitely pale. With her pale skin and long dark hair, Mary should not wear that much black.

Not to be mean, but she reminds me a bit of a vampire in this picture.

Yes, the dress is a bit frumpy, isn't it? Still, I will rise to F+M's defence and say that the poor picture quality probably adds to their unhappy/vampire looks. Has anyone found any other pictures from this event?

I live in Canada, we don't get much of the Scandinavian news over here. Well, it's good that she's learnt. Does she have an Aussie accent? I'd like to hear that. My grade 4 teacher was British, and we'd get him to speak Swedish with us sometimes, it was hilarious. I had an American friend who spoke good Swedish but with an accent. Oh..accents are cool.

Not many of the reports on Mary Donaldson's danish is online - but apparantly she speaks with no forreign accent - in an upper class pronounciation.

I take it you read the scandinavian languages - then I recommend the newspaper BT's free archive on Crown Prince Frederik and Mary Donaldson :

Royal Romance http://www.bt.dk/royalt/focus:fid=100039779/

Obviously about her danish - read the piece : Mary taler dansk

To read BT's complete F&M collection : scroll down - right corner - click on the yellow box : ALLE FOKUS ARTIKLER

This collection is organized in order of time upwards -
the first article starts at the bottom :

2.november 2001 - Frederik's vacation to Australia :)

MD's identity was published in Denmark [and the world] 15.november 2001 ^_^

They reportedly met saturday 16.september 2000

Edited with new working link - because BT was redesigned 1.september 2003 :)

:punk: Okay, I am setting a date for the wedding of Mary and Frederick November 14, 2004!!Woooha! Any other 'dating pools?'....It is easy just pick a date on when you think the royals will get married and see if you are correct when they actually tie the knot! You can also do this on guessing a baby's exact date of birth! It is silly but also fun. :flower:

I don't think it will be in November. Remember what happened when Joachim and Alexandra got married November 18, 1995? There was a gigantic snowstorm that his Copenhagen. I don't think they want this repeated. I'm guessing on a spring or summer wedding. Margrethe got married June 10, 1967.

I agree, I too see more of a summer wedding...July for instance. That would be nice, or a wedding in May... either way.
