King Juan Carlos abandonned today, for a few minutes, the second plenary session of the 17th Latin American Summit, after asking the Venezuelan president, Hugo Chávez, to shut up and not interrupt the Spanish Prime-minister, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who was demanding "respect" for the former head of the Spanish Executive, José Maria Aznar. "¿Por qué no te callas?", espetó el Rey a Chávez en la Cumbre Iberoamericana - 20minutos.es Por qué no te callas?", espetó el Rey a Chávez en la Cumbre Iberoamericana El Rey Juan Carlos de España espetó este sábado, en el Plenario de la Cumbre Iberoamericana, al presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, "¿por qué no te callas?", ante las descalificaciones vertidas por éste contra el ex presidente del gobierno español, José María Aznar. Acto seguido el rey abandonó el plenario mientras el presidente nicaragüense, Daniel Ortega, criticaba a empresas españolas. Poco después el monarca regresaba a la cumbre de clausura. El presidente de Venezuela llamó fascista a Aznar hasta en tres ocasiones durante su primer discurso en la cumbre Iberoamericana. Hoy Chávez volvió a atacar duramente al ex jefe del Gobierno español, José María Aznar, al que calificó de nuevo de "fascista" y sostuvo que en una conversación privada le respondió "esos se jodieron (sic)" al aludir a los países más pobres del mundo. El Rey, enojado Chávez reveló detalles de una conversación mantenida con Aznar durante la visita oficial a Caracas que el entonces presidente del Gobierno hizo en julio de 1999 para "invitarle" a incorporarse al "club del primer mundo". Esa actitud de Chávez provocó la intervención del Rey, sentado entre Zapatero y su ministro de Exteriores, Miguel Angel Moratinos, y cerca de Chávez para dirigirse a él y, enojado y señalándole con el dedo, recriminarle: ¿Por qué no te callas? La presidenta de Chile y anfitriona de la cumbre, Michelle Bachelet, tuvo que mediar para intentar evitar que la sesión se convirtiera en un cruce de acusaciones, y cedió de nuevo la palabra a Zapatero, quien insistió en la necesidad de no caer en la descalificación pese a que se discrepe radicalmente de las ideas o comportamientos de otra persona.

I watched right now on the news, I just was like
, no one can stand President Chavez, but I just hope that the King didn't cause any diplomatic accident with, but at leat HM was the only person who had 'balls' enough to shut up Chavez, and as a King, HM just did his role defending Spain and his people.Last edited by tdarlene; 11-11-2007 at 04:23 AM.

The King was very brave in this occasion, he came not only in defence of Aznar but also in defence of President Zapatero who was being constantly interrupted by that dictator Chavez.
With this event and the succesful recent visit to Ceuta and Melilla I guess he is going to be very popular again!

I watched it on TV about 3 hours ago. It reminds me old films about powerfull monarchs which decided about someone's live or death.
I was laughing on Chavez reaction to the King's words - it was something: what?! how this man, this king could say something like that to me...  Go Juan Carlos  You never know when you find defenders...specially if the one is your political adversary.

It is not an adversaries' question, it is a question of respect and education.
What is not understandable is that a Chief of State interrupts the shift of word of a President of the Government, to impose his opinions, and to criticize and to insult the predecessor of other one. Like it is not acceptable that begins a discussion on Spanish companies, which are private companies that do their business, and if they have a problem they will have to discuss it with it not with the Spanish Government. It is curious, to criticize to the Spanish companies they turns out to be very profitable in their populist speech .... what not turns out to be to them beneficial is to say the thousands of millions that Spain destines to the development of their countries.
