Thank you for the photos, An Ard Ri. I haven't been following Elena's family thread for a while so I thought Victoria Federica looked quite grown up in these photos!

It is indeed! The younger Spanish royals are all growing up so fast, I can't believe that Leonor's going to be twelve next year too.

Letizia is getting very bad press for her short stay at Mallorca, the image is that there is no love lost between the Queen and the island. She only spent as little time as possible there and did 2 photoshoots that could not be avoided (the second shoot in Soller had to be done because the Miro sculptures in the Marivent gardens could not be included in the first shoot and they had to say thank you in some way), did not join her husband at the copa del rey (like Beatrice Borromeo), only greeted people very very shortly before the reception (unlike Felipe) and snapped at reporters in Soller who wanted to ask the girls a question about the exhibition.

i didn't know she snapped at reporters in soller... apparently she said 'do not look for headlines. the girls liked the exposition very much. they won't say anything else'. i don't see the point to be so controlling and to snap at the reporters like that. what harm can it do to let leonor and sofia say what they thought? as if it was a crime to have an opinion! even if they pronounced their opinion, how is it even the press would deform anything they say about an exhibition? how very silly and controlling. a total different attitude to press with respect to other monarchies which let kids speak freely to the press!

and totally ignoring sofia at the entrance of the palace is simply rude. how does felipe allow that sort of snub?

but well, this is not new news. letizia, for several years, has only visited mallorca for summer as part of her activities and not because she deems it as holiday. her holiday starts after mallorca, when they head to some secret destination. gone are the days of JC and sofia, where mallorca was part of their holiday and a very likeable one. i don't think letizia sees it as such. a part of it is understandable: as soon as she goes out, she is threading on eggs, where the press will criticise anything she does anyway (usually, her short skirts and whether she hangs out or not with the urdangarin kids - not that those things are not easily solvable by not using short skirts or by keeping her distances with the urdangarins).

Do not trust this kind of newspaper, every summer it's the same, Letizia hates Mallorca, Letizia hates Mallorca and Letizia hates Mallorca, they need to sell a lot of magazines and they know perfectly that in Spain the gossip is one of the national sports, and the easy is use Letizia to get their montly salary and even an big extra. Their problem maybe is they ask about something out of place and she obviously cannot answer it, what's happen?, the press is furious and revenge is a dish served cold (or hot in this case, they are in Mallorca). They LOVE blood and guts, don't care Letizia now the Queen of Spain and Zarzuela NEVER does anything to stop their attacks.

Today, to be the Queen of Spain is a very hard job.

It's only the lowest kind of gossip press/sites that were criticizing. Letizia's remark had to do with a recent article about Leonor liking Kurosawa films. That was ridiculed widely on social media. A lot of people made fun of Leonor's taste as too high brow and called her pathetic/weirdo etc. Letizia obviously was aware of this. Those reporters asked Leonor what she thought of the exhibition repeatedly, trying to get a response that would confirm she's too high brow to be normal. Letizia intervened to protect her daughter. That's why she told those reporters not to look for headlines. Now they called her rude but at least they're not ridiculing Leonor.

Why couldn't Leonor have answered the questions about what she thought of the exhibition? Leonor is going on twelve and is - if she's lucky, at least - the future Queen of Spain. If a reporter asks her what she thought of an exhibit she should be able to look them in the eye and say, "I liked it very much, thank you." If the reporter then asks her what she liked the most she should be able to to give a short response to that, too. And then, if the reporters continue to push, Felipe or Letizia can jump in and say, "yes, we all thought it was great and learned a lot" while smiling and ushering the girls away.

Letizia's behaviour was commented on - and not just by the gossip press - because it WAS rude. It's not ok to snap at a reporter "don't look for headlines" because said reporter had the nerve to ask her daughter a very simple question.

Letizia was not rude, she is a former journalist who knows very well what "some professionals" get up to. Leonor is an 11 y.o. child and the journo WAS AFTER a headline.

Generating headlines and interesting quotes are what reporters are paid to do, and by this point Letizia and Felipe should know that it's in their best interest to have at least some of those headlines and quotes say things like, "Princesses at the Museum: Hear What They Had To Say!" and "I really liked how the paintings were so colourful!' exclaimed Leonor, smiling sweetly." As opposed to the ones they've got now about that cloying, tone deaf Kurosawa article, (Leonor will never live that one down), Letizia not even bothering to pretend she likes Mallorca anymore, and of course Letizia snapping at the reporters for daring to break the cone of silence that apparently surrounds the two girls.

The Spanish media environment is tough, I'm certainly not denying that, and Letizia has endured plenty of unfair coverage over the years. But not all of the criticism is undeserved and it's not coming out of nowhere.

How is this any different then other royal children? At that age none are expected to do more. Other then at an official photo call it is controlled.

For the girls this was a private day at the museum. The media was told yes, but this was not a royal event. It was like the photo shoot, a way for the girls to be seen without the paps following.

Leonor if she was answered was in a no win situation. If she said 'it's colourful' there would be cruel jokes about her kindergarten response. If she gave done astute answer, she'd either be too high brow and out of touch, or too rehearsed by her mother. She was simply a young girl on holiday visiting a museum. Hopefully as she gets a bit older she will be comfortable enough to do so.

The media looks for any reason to target Letizia and use her daughter's now. Of bourse she prefers their oriented vacation. Who wouldn't? It's nothing against Mallorca. But there they are very much still on show and have duties to perform. Trip sailing or the museum is not just that. Like any family, even royal, they enjoy private family time. All royal families enjoy this. And most do abroad.

Generating headlines and interesting quotes is not what what the King and Queen of Spain should do or represent under the Constitution of Spain.

Under the Constitution.....

The King is Head of State, the symbol of its unity and permanence. He arbitrates and moderates the regular functioning of the institutions, assumes the highest representation of the Spanish State in international relations, especially with the nations of its historical community, and exercises the functions expressly conferred on him by the Constitution and the laws.

— Title II the Crown, Article 56, the Spanish Constitution of 1978

It is incumbent upon the King:

a. To sanction and promulgate the laws
b. To summon and dissolve the Cortes Generales and to call for elections under the terms provided for in the Constitution.
c. To call for a referendum in the cases provided for in the Constitution.
e. To appoint and dismiss members of the Government on the President of the Government's proposal.
f. To issue the decrees approved in the Council of Ministers, to confer civil and military honours and distinctions in conformity with the law.
g. To be informed of the affairs of State and, for this purpose, to preside over the meetings of the Council of Ministers whenever, he sees fit, at the President of the Government's request.
h. To exercise supreme command of the Armed Forces
i. To exercise the right of clemency in accordance with the law, which may not authorize general pardons.
j. To exercise the High Patronage of the Royal Academies.
— Title II The Crown, Article 62, the Spanish Constitution of 1978[3][18]

Pandering to gossip journalists looking for a headline from the 11 year old Princess of Asturias, is not, again, what the Queen of Spain has to do.

There really is nothing fluffy about the SRF, they are dead serious in what they're doing I wonder why they are lowering themselves to to such frivolous things like photocalls at all.

This is the article that obvioiusly angered Letizia, because there was lots of polemic afterwards.
