The Kings of Spain, Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía, along with the Latin American presidents kept a minute of silence at the beginning of the inaugural session of the XV Latin American Summit of Salamanca, in memory of the victims of the Stan hurricane that affected Central America and of the four people who passed away yesterday in Catalonia, as result of heavy rains.

In his speech, HM the King pleaded for a greater projection of Ibero-America in the international concert, where it must occupy the position that corresponds "to its dimension, political and economic potential".
He also remembered that "many million people yearn for concrete results of this summit". For Don Juan Carlos, the Latin American countries stand out for their values of respect to the human rights, democracy and multilateralism.

The day began in the famous Plaza Mayor, at 10 o’clock, when - under rain - the kings Juan Carlos and Sofía arrived at the City Hall of Salamanca, where they were awaited by Zapatero. Minutes later, the several Heads of State and Government that participate in the summit arrived.

HM the Queen and the wives of the heads of State and Government that are attending the XV Latin American Summit made today a route by the old town of Salamanca, to admire the main architectonic jewels of this city of palaces and churches.

The visit began in front of the main entrance of the University. Once in the library, the ladies watched some of its main bibliographical jewels: 'El libro de las horas' of Doña Sancha (a manuscript of the XI century), an original manuscript of 'El libro del buen amor' of Arcipreste de Hita, a series of gorgeous cartography books of South America from 1662 and an astronomical map of 1540, among others.

When the rain stopped, the ladies took a walk to admire the facade of the new cathedral and the altarpiece of the old cathedral. After signing the honour roll, the first ladies visited the church and the Dominican convent of San Esteban.

The rain threat and the strict safety measures forced the wives of the heads executives to make good part of route by bus. However, there was also time for a brief stroll and the irregular ground of old stones of the churches made some ladies test their skills on high heels; that was particularly the case of the first lady of Honduras, Aguas Ocaña, who was wearing shoes of very thin heel, matching a shining narrow skirt that caught the attention of many people passing by.

The stroll was finally concluded with a group photo of the Queen with the wives of the presidents and prime ministers, in front of the main facade of the Dominican Convent, and under the applause of a small group of people, who cheered the ladies from a neighbour street.

They do seem to be having a good time admits all the politicking! Thanks for th photos.

And isn't Salamanca beautiful!!! One of my favorite places in the world!

I know that the King and Queen have met up with and spent time with many if not all of these politicians and their spouses at least once, but I am constantly impressed each time I am reminded, how friendly and affectionate both the King and Queen seem to be.

In all of these pictures (thank you to everyone by the way! :) ), the King has his arms around presidents and prime ministers, the Queen has linked her arms with their spouses, both of their Majesties are smiling and laughing with them, their heads bent deep in conversation as if no one else was around.

It is obvious that despite the business and the politicking as lucys says, everyone is having a good time and the King and Queen are making all of their guests feel welcome. This is why I love this family so much!

I am not asking this quest ion to start a political discussion. I am just curious to know if anyone knows why Cuba was not included in the summit?

Yes it is included, the Minister of Exteriors is. Cuba forms a part of the Latin-American community of nations, but approximately 4 years Fidel is not present at these summits.

The leaders produce an honoring to Don Juan Carlos for thirty years of Reign

Enrique Iglesias emphasized the " enormous labor " of the King and delivered him
a tray of silver with the signatures of all the presidents, included them of absent SALAMANCA. The Latin-American leaders produced yesterday an honoring to His Majesty the King on the occasion of thirty years of hisproclamation, which is fulfilled next November 22, and gave him a great tray of silver with the signatures of all of them, included those of the presidents who have not travelled to the Summit of Salamanca.
The honoring, which was a surprise for Don Juan Carlos, took place during the luncheon that the attendees supported in the former Auditorium of the University of Salamanca to the Latin-American Summit. Till now, this gesture of the Latin Americans will be the only act related to the royal commemoration, since officially there is nothing foreseen to celebrate the trigésimo anniversary in Spain. Not at least yesterday, that there were many references to the commemoration, the prime minister, Jose Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, did some allusion to it in his speech during the inaugural ceremony of the Summit.
He was the Latin-American secretary general, Enrique Iglesias, the manager of delivering the tray to the King, in which the following dedication could be read: " In honoring of respect and affection his thirty years of Reign and to his labor in the construction of the Latin-American community ". But the delivery was accompanied also of the affectionate words that Churches, in name of all the leaders, it directed Don Juan Carlos. This way, the Latin-American secretary general emphasized the " enormous labor " realized by the King in the construction of the Latin-American community.
Gratefulness of the Monarch
After receiving this honoring, Don Juan Carlos assured that it was not waited and said that it had come to him to the heart. Later, in the night, in the dinner of show, the King was grateful for all " samples of affection with which you us have distinguished to the Queen and to me " for this Summit had coincided with the trigésimo anniversary.
The certain thing is that the speeches of the inaugural session of the Latin-American Summit have been loaded with praises closed to Don Juan Carlos by the achievements obtained in these thirty years of Reign. Both Enrique Iglesias and the president of Costa Rica, Abel Pacheco, refirieron to the commemoration.
Iglesias he remembered that Don Juan Carlos " decided that his historical destiny was to take up office as personal responsibility that his great country was changing for better. And, certainly, that in these 30 years Spain has changed and for better for his immense achievements in the construction of the vigorous democracy and the advances with firm foot in the economic progress and the social justice ".

A more relevant role

The King, in his speeches, also refirió to the advances obtained in each of the previous summits, but he demonstrated that " for its dimension and political, economic, social and cultural potential, Latin America can and must recover a more relevant role in the current world ".
As Don Juan Carlos demonstrated, " it is much what we have obtained, but it is important to admit also that we have a long way up to reaching the growth, the integration and the social well-being with equity, which we wish for all our citizens ".

The Chilean president, Ricardo Lagos, paid today a sincere tribute to King Juan Carlos. In his last intervention in the plenary session, Lagos celebrated the fact that this XV Latin American Summit coincides with the 30th reigning anniversary of HM the King. Lagos said that Don Juan Carlos has spent the first 15 years of his reign (from 1975 to 1990) 'working for a modern and democratic Spain’ and the following 15 years 'raising up a community like the Latin American one, so that it can project itself into the XXI century’.
As answer, the King asked permission to break the protocol of the plenary sessions and said: 'Thank you very much, thank you very much from the bottom of my heart’.

In the first day of this summit, the King received as gift for his thirty years as monarch a great tray of silver, with the signature of all the Heads of State and Government of the 22 nations that took part in the Latin American Summit.
