Because in Spain there are vacations and they all are full of tourists, because the press and the people would not allow them to move, and because the safety problems would be complicated.

But in the past ALL the family went to Baqueira and they did not have the problems that you mention. IMO it's a mistake that the first photos of L&S on holidays where in Switzerland. And with the economic downturn it's not going to help their popularity.

The Queen is of vacations in Salzburg, and is not the first time that members of the Royal Family ski in Switzerland. The reality is that it is cheaper enough than they go away out of Spain, when they travel abroad they do it with a small group of bodyguards. When they are in Baqueira or Mallorca they need equipments of safety of dozens or even hundreds of persons.
10 or 15 years ago, Baqueira was an exclusive and calm ski resort and the ski a sport that in Spain only people with money were practising. The ski has become popular, and Baqueira has filled with politicians, famous people and press. This, together with the age, were the reasons of which the King and the Queen stopped going to Baqueira; they might go, be with their grandchildren and not to ski, but they do not do it. Probably, that Baqueira was a terrorist aim influenced too. It is difficult to know if they do not go to Baqueira because they do not want or because they cannot or is not responsible to do it.

They are persons and also they have right to vacations, do not they have right to travel as any other person?
The Prince and the Princess work of responsible form, only take vacations in the established periods, do not take advantage of their official trips for vacations and spend always part of their vacations in Spain. And really to be in Mallorca chased constant by the press and living in a safety bunker they do not look like the ideal vacations.

In any other occasion I would agree with you. But this year is not the appropiate time to display any kind of great spending; they should have stayed in Spain, I think that most Spaniards would have liked to see their Princes enjoying their holidays on their own countries.

Well Spain is full like all other ski resorts...that is not a justification...safety problems are the same...and croweded are all resort ski everywhere now! It'a a shame that they aren't in a Spanish ski resort!!!! Baqueira, Formigal, Sierra Nevada are good enough!!!!!!

i also posed myself the same question, why not choosing baqueira for example. however, it's obvious that the expectation would be huge, "leonor's first skiing classes", sofia and paloma also being there doesn't help distract the attention of the press. this was the case during letizia's first skiing trip and i guess they know from experience it's not the best idea: let's not forget that leonor is only a child and it's just normal that letizia wants to protect her and to avoid the expectation that followed her experience.

royals go to skii outside their country all the time. frederik, mary and kids go to switzerland as well, WA and maxima and children go to austria, victoria and her siblings go to switzerland all the time. i don't think it's a huge issue if letizia does it.

The difference is that Baqueira Beret has appeared in several occasions between the aims of the terrorist band ETA, because there the members of the Royal Family spend their vacations ... and the safety problem is that the Prince is between the principal aims of this terrorist group. They cannot move with freedom in Spain, and evidently they cannot go to a ski resort in Spain, without important measures of safety, and less in these dates, that Spain is in high terrorist alert, for the European presidency. They cannot go to where they want and when they want.

Then they could have gone to Marivent, as they had done other years. And if they wanted to ski they could have chosen some less known ski resort in Spain.

Now it is already spring, snow is not good anymore at the Spanish ski resorts. Felipe is an advanced skier, he probably likes the tracks of the Swiss Alps much better. When Felipe was single, he skied in Switzerland all the time, sometimes even in Aspen Colorado with his friends. He has already toned down his life style quite a bit after he got married, bottom line he is a royal.
I remember last time when the Kings skied at Baqueira, there were hundreds of policemen there. I bet if the Asturian family skied at a Spanish resort, someone would be complaining about the security cost.
