On 10 July 1900 Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria married Duchess Marie-Gabrielle in Bavaria, daughter of Duke Karl-Theodor in Bavaria and Princess Marie José of Portugal. The bride was the niece of the famous empress Elisabeth 'Sissi' of Austria and the sister of Queen Elisabeth of the Belgians. The couple married in Munich. After Marie Gabrielle died Rupprecht would remarry with Princess Antoinette of Luxembourg, a 2st cousin of Marie Gabriele.

Here are some photographs of Marie-Gabrielle with the fruits of their marriage:

1. Luitpold, who died at age 13 (in 1914) of polio,

2. Irmingard, Marie-Gabrielle and Rupprecht's only daughter, who died at age 7 months (in 1902) of diphtheria,

3. Albrecht, the only one of the children to survive into adulthood (died in 1996) and the ancestor of the current Bavarian royal family, and

4. Rudolf, who died at age 3 (in 1912) of diabetes. His mother died four months later (at age 34), and his oldest brother died two years afterward.

What a great deal of tragic loss for this family... Rupprecht losing his wife and three children... and Albrecht losing his mother and three siblings. Terrible.
