Pieter van Vollenhoven will feature in a special episode of the RKK. The camera's followed him while he shared a day with the monks in a convent in Berkel-Enschot.

He talks among other things about his parents and that they were worried when he entered the royal house. He hope that his parents are able to see what he is doing now and he says he also hopes his mother-in-law will be able to see how he found his own way. According to Pieter the late Queen wanted him to follow his own path, she would have liked this... (his present role in security etc).

Are his parents still living? I wonder if they finally gave their approval?

No, I didn't translate it well. He mant that he hoped they could see all that from above.

Thank you, Marengo. I didn't think that they were still living, but after reading this, I wasn't so sure.

She looks fantastic! I would not have guessed her age at 66. She looks younger than her actual age. Will there be a family celebration in honor of her birthday?

Privately only.

Prof. Pieter said that it was the first time he visited the palace since the RF took away most of their possessions. He also commented on the present debate on a new function for the palace: 'I doubt that she [Queen Juliana] would have liked it'.

As i wrote on the blog:

Prof. Mr. Pieter van Vollenhoven, bother-in-law of Dutch queen Beatrix, today announced that a faulty altitude meter probably is the cause of the crash of an airplane of Turkish Airways near Schiphol Airport one week ago. Nine people, including the three pilots, were killed when the Boeing 737-800 ploughed into a muddy field last Wednesday. Around 80 people got wounded, 28 of which are still in the hospital.

Pieter van Vollenhoven said that the counsil had decided to release the investigation’s preliminary findings as a ‘warning to Boeing’, to review the use of this altitude meter in combination with an automatic pilot. Further investigation will now focus on the altitude meter and the link with the automatic pilot system and the throttle. It will also look at two previous incidents involving altitude meters.

Van Vollenhoven is the chairman of the National Safety Council, which does research after the causes of the crash. While the plane flew on an altitude of 1950 ft. the meter showed the altitude as -8 ft. This led the engine to as if it was landing and shut down. The Boeing then dropped below the speed necessary to stay in the air. Once the crew realised what had happened, it was too late to recover. Eye-witnesses said the plane appeared to ‘drop like a stone’.

From our blog:

Prof. Mr. Pieter van Vollenhoven, brother-in-law of queen Beatrix, attended the memorial service that was organized in a hangar in Schiphol-East for the victims of the plane crash with a plane of Turkish Airways, ten days ago. During this crash nine people lost their lives and 80 people got injured.
Apart from Pieter van Vollenhoven the mayor of Haarlemmermeer, the Dutch ministers of Internal Affairs and Justice , the Turkish ambassador and his wife and 600 victims of the crash and their relatives attended the service. The queen was represented by an advisor.
