Arganil's Brotherhood of the "Bucho" is going to organize, next June 30th, a series of events, in order to celebrate the 100th anniversary of King D. Carlos' visit to this village, in June 1907. These events, which include an evocative session in the Town's Hall and a dinner at the Quinta do Mosteiro, will be attended by D. Duarte Pio, Duke of Bragança.

Besides, a trip along the Vale do Alva and a visit to the former school of the Paço Grande (which once received the royal family) will also take place.

Notícias do Douro - 25-05-2007 - Sociedade - A família imperial no Brasil

The Duke and Duchess of Bragança have accepted the invitation sent by the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, in order to attend the celebrations around the 200th anniversary since the displacement of King D. João VI and his Court to Rio. The celebrations are going to start at the Royal and Imperial Cathedral, the Church of Senhora do Carmo.

Lágrimas e homenagens pelos que tombaram ao serviço da Pátria

As it happens every year, D. Duarte participated in the National Meeting of Former-combatants, which took place, as usual, on June 10th (Day of Portugal, of Camões and of the Portuguese Communities), close to the Monument to the Combatants of Overseas, in Belém, Lisbon.

Meanwhile, Dom Duarte de Bragança was interviewed for the TV show "Primeira Pessoa", aired last Thursday 14th, on SIC. The chat lead by Conceição Lino took place in the National Palace of Ajuda (one of the last residences of the Portuguese Royal family), in the Military School and also in his own house of Sintra. During this interview, Dom Duarte de Bragança talked of his parents, his child memories in the exile, the marriage with D.ª Isabel de Herédia, the upbringing of his three children, about the politicians and the country.

D.ª Isabel had an operation, last Wednesday, due to a horse fall that broke one of her coller bones. The accident happened on Saturday, when the Duchess of Bragança, accompanied by her family and a group of friends, was riding in Sintra. At the time, D.ª Isabel was not fully aware of the gravity of her fracture, but afterwards she started feeling worse. She was hospitalized on Tuesday and had an operation on the following day. She's fine now, but still in hospital.
After the surgery, the Duchess will do phisiotherapy.

Azeitão recebeu centenas de convidados e inaugura exposição Catarina de Bragança

This year's Bacalhôa Wine's Summer Party pays homage to D.ª Catarina de Bragança (Princess of Portugal and Queen of England), with an exhibition that was inaugurated last week, by the Duke of Bragança and the historian José Hermano Saraiva.

This exhibition assembles an extensive iconographic and documental patrimony, among oil paintings, engravings, the wedding contract with Charles II of England, as well as a varied set of objects that was collected for the 1988 building project of a 10m-tall statue in Queens (New York). The Berardo Foundation, along with the Bacalhôa Wines of Portugal, contributed with some original pieces of this exhibition.

On Thursday evening, the famous Bacalhôa, Wines of Portugal, Summer Party was held at the Quinta da Bassaqueira (Setúbal). Professor José Hermano Saraiva and Dom Duarte de Bragança presided over the speeches and inaugurated an iconographic exhibition, dedicated to Dona Catarina de Bragança, the Portuguese Princess and Queen of England, who was responsible for introducing in Great-Britain the social habit of drinking tea.

This is a homage to a queen that, according to Joe Berardo, has been "ill-treated in America", since its Afro-american community refused the construction of a statue in Queens (USA), alleging that Catherine of Braganza would have been responsible for the 17th century slavery. Joe Berardo considers this as an ill-interpretation, explaning that "as a widower, this queen dedicated part of her richness to buy slaves, in order to set them free".

This historical exhibition celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Bacalhôa, Wines of Portugal, which has also released a new label, named "Catarina".

The party assembled more than 200 guests, in a huge outdoor dinner, livened up by several musical performances and fireworks.

Last weekend, Arganil's Brotherhood of the Bucho decided to recreate the events of June 8th, 9th and 10th of 1907 (when king D. Carlos and prince D. Luís Filipe visited the municipality) by inviting the Duke of Bragança to come to the region.
During the Town's Hall session, D. Duarte Pio confessed that, although it was his first official visit to the municipality, he used to enjoy his Summer vacations in Serpins, where his aunt had a house. The duke of Bragança advocated the necessity of "preserving the cultural identity" of the region, otherway the countryside may "become a suburb and a desert area". After the ceremony, there was a stroll by the Vale do Alva, Côja, Vila Cova de Alva, Avô and Ponte das Três Entradas.

Investigadora perde esperança de abrir túmulo de D. Afonso Henriques - RTP Informação

The Portuguese anthropologist Eugénia Cunha (from the University of Coimbra) - who was forbidden to open the tomb of D. Afonso Henriques - says now that she has lost all her hopes in retaking the investigations on the bones of Portugal's first king. The project intended to study the bones of the man who found the Kingdom of Portugal, in 1143, by reconstituting his biological profile, physical structure, stature, age, as well as some of the pathologies that had affected his bones.

Last year (on July 6th), the Portuguese Institute of the Architectonic Patrimony (IPPAR) stopped this project, when a Luso-Spaniard team, headed by the scientist Eugénia Cunha, was already removing one of the rocks from the royal tomb, in the Church of Santa Cruz. The decision was applauded at the time, by the monarchic sectors, namely by D. Duarte Pio de Bragança.

The Town Hall of Cascais inaugurated, on June 28th, the exhibition "Mar! Obra Artística do Rei D. Carlos", in the Museum of the Sea - King D. Carlos. It includes nearly 120 works, among aquarelles, oil paintings and drawings on different materials, as well as a varied set of objects also painted by the king, between the last quarter of the 19th century and the first years of 20th). The exhibition constitutes a rare opportunity to see what usually is inaccessible, since the majority of the works belong to private collections.

By painting boats and accomplishing a series of pioneering studies of Oceanography, King D. Carlos expressed his great love for the sea. In 1896, the monarch decided to install the first oceanographical laboratory in the Palace of Cidadela. Between 1896 and 1907, he started in Cascais a series of 12 oceanographical campaigns, which constituted a landmark in the portuguese scientific history.

This extraordinary exhibition takes place at the same time as the Sailing World Championship, which is currently happening in Cascais, between June 28th and July 13th.

Hello, Iverieli!
To be honest, monarchy is not something that popular in Portugal... we have strong republican convictions here and, although the royal family is seen with sympathy (especially after the wedding, 10 years ago), the truth is that nobody takes them seriously...

But still, the republic is very respectfull to him and invites the ducal couple to many state events, especially if foreign royalty comes to visit Portugal. Their wedding was something to be seen: not only it was attended by the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and most members of the cabinet, but the whole celebration was turned into a state occasion, with a huge TV broadcasting and the streets crowded with people...

All this in a country where nobody takes the royal family's pretensions quite seriously; perhaps that's why they are treated with so much sympathy: they don't represent any danger for the Republic!...

Eeehhh.. thats not good. I wish the situation more seriously because Monarchy is not only wedding or public event. The portugal has to make very strong movement for reinstate monarchy.

We, Georgian people swear god every day to give as chance to reinstate our monarchy. The Bagrationi royal family ruled Georgia for 1300 years (6ht - 19th centuries).

I'm sorry to talking too much about georgians, but you know I looking very honestly all royal families. Georgian Orthodox Church is most powerful and oldest in Georgia and Georgian Patriarch and all of them hope to one day Georgian monarchy reinstate. Many georgians not take it seriously too but if we make referendum about monarchy, there will be enough votes to reinstate monarchy.

Sorry again for off topic. Hope Portugal will became soon State Monarchy.

Dom Duarte, the Duke of Braganza, talks during an interview with Reuters in Lisbon in this June 15, 2007 file photo. Duarte, a relic of the Portuguese aristocracy, may not enjoy the riches or influence of the former kings of Portugal, but he'd be happy to take the throne if it was on offer. Although Portugal has been a republic since 1910, Duarte told Reuters he'd like to see a referendum on whether the constitution can be changed to bring back the monarchy and allow him to regain the family throne.

DN Online: Música dos bares Sasha e Nikki incomoda D. Duarte Pio

The Duke of Bragança is having restless nights, due to the loud music played at the bars Sasha and Niki, in Praia da Rocha (Portimão). He is now going to present a formal complaint, in order to stop these Summer night parties.

D. Duarte Pio spends his vacations in a property of his own, located on the bank of the river Arade, nearly one kilometre far from the bars that every year attract thousands of visitors, including many jet set personalities.

The Duke emphasizes: "The walls of my house tremble and the children can not sleep, due to the constant noise and music, up to 5 or 6 AM. It's unbelievable that the City Council of Portimão allows this".

Portimão: Câmara vai fazer novas medições a espaços nocturnos da Praia da Rocha depois de reclamação de D. Duarte - Lusa - SAPO Notícias

Meanwhile, the Town Hall of Portimão is going to ask for new noise measurements to the bars "Sasha" and "Nikki", in Praia da Rocha, after the Duke of Bragança presented his formal complaint. The vice-mayor of Portimão, Luís Carito, confirmed to the Lusa newsagency that they have received a fax from Dom Duarte, explaining the situation, and says that, according to the measurements already done, the limits of noise allowed by law are not exceeded and so the "inconvenience factor" is subjective, since he himself lives close to the house of D. Duarte and he does not feel bothered.

Nevertheless, new measurements are going to be done in the area of the bars, close to the marina.

I think Dom Duarte is right to complain. In Portugal, many bars and discos don't respect others rights to rest. I am a strong defensor of anti-noise laws (they exist in several european countries) and I am glad Dom Duarte is complaining about this situation.

Last September 7th, D. Duarte Pio, Duke of Bragança, inaugurated the 16th Wine Fair of Dão, in the Multipurpose Building of Nelas. The event is dedicated to the promotion of the wines of Dão and gathered more than on 100 different producers.

D. Duarte de Bragança is supporting a petition headed by the Association for the Defense and Recovery of the Patrimony that is promoting the recovery of the two main churches of Aveiro (St. António and St. Francisco churches).

I thought that the Duke would be present, and I know what I'm going to say isn't about royalty but I wonder what Jose Castelo Branco and his wife Lady Betty were doing there, he must has felt like he was in paradise.

HAHA! Well said :D
I couldn't believe when I saw José Castelo Branco and his wife attending this wedding... I mean, this was a royal wedding, not a circus...

Well, I believe he's there, because of the groom's PR connections. Anthony Bailey has a house in Lisbon (where he proposed to Marie-Therese, as the new year dawned) and their civil wedding even took place in Sintra, in the Palace of Pena... So, he knows a lot of Portuguese polititians, royals and "VIPs" (he was wearing knighthood awards from the Duke of Bragança and the Portuguese President, with the uniform)... Not to mention that Lady Betty Grafstein is British...

D.ª Isabel

Has there been any more word on D.a Isabel's condition since her fall? I was hoping to hear that she is mobile enough to attend more functions. I know these things take time to heal but there hasn't been much word on her recovery. Any word would be great.
Thanks,
MM :flowers:

Speaking of which (the palace, not the wedding) here is an attractive image of a unique Portuguese Royal Palace...

There's not much news about it... I believe she's still recovering, since she's not attending royal gatherings for a long time.

Yesterday, D. Duarte attendedthe closing session of a series of conferences about "D. Carlos no seu tempo", which had been organized in Porto, to celebrate the 100th anniversary since the regicide.

P.S. - Warren, that palace is the one I was refering above... where Princess Marie-Therese von Hohenberg and Anthony Bailey got civily married.

Expresso: D. Duarte preocupado com ataques do Governo à Igreja

During the annual "Jantar dos Conjurados" (which commemorates the 1640 Restoration of Independence), the head of the Royal House expressed his concern for what he calls the "preoccupying attacks" to the Church and the need to assure that the Country maintains the "truly independent sovereignty of all the economic, regional and politics powers".

About the signature of the European Treaty, D. Duarte stressed that a national debate is necessary and that the return of a king is needed: "By signing the Treaty, we say that we want to belong to Europe. Having a King would mean saying that Portugal continues belonging to the Portuguese people".

DN Online: D. Duarte elogia o Rei Juan Carlos e protege Chávez da polémica

During the “Jantar dos Conjurados” (which gathered 500 monarchists, at the Quinta de Santa Sofia, in São Domingos de Rana), D. Duarte Pio de Bragança supported the attitude of Juan Carlos de Bórbon (during the XVII Latin American Summit in Chile, where he asked Hugo Chávez to shut up). However, the Head of the Portuguese Royal House also expressed his gratitude to Chávez, for the approach that the President of Venezuela made to Portugal, valuing the four hundred thousand Portuguese people that live in his country and making possible a more efficient cooperation".

Being this meeting a commemorative dinner of the December 1st 1640, D. Duarte also evoked the Restoration of Independence, but made clear that today the National Independence could be weakened in many ways. This way, D. Duarte introduced in his speech the Lisbon Treaty, which will be signed in the Monastery of the Jerónimos, next December 13th. After indirectly praising the Government, for the diplomatic achievements, D. Duarte expressed his concerns about the institutional reform of the European Union, overly because of the introduction of a European President, who D. Duarte wishes shall not mine the diversity of the nations.

Well, any chance that he is even opening a debate? About the monarchy or even about keeping the national identity? Or are his remarks generally not taken too seriously? Mind you, judging from the clip you showed above (Duarte at a militairy school) it seems people are treating him with reverence, especially considering that he was interviewed by a commercial channel, not by a state one.
