The Royal Cause wants next February 1st (100th anniversary of the regicide) to be considered a National Mourning Day.
On February 1st 1908, at Terreiro do Paço (Lisboa), King D. Carlos and the crown prince, D. Luís Filipe, were shot by two members of the Carbonária, as they were coming back from Vila Viçosa.

Tomorrow, D. Duarte Pio de Bragança is going to present the commission in charge of the celebrations around the regicide.

I don't think their request will be attended. Portugal has now a socialist (and republican) government. I am not seeing the Prime-Minister Sócrates, a fervous supporter of republicanism, mourning for King Dom Carlos and his son
Anyway, I think this date should be remembered by the formal Authorities. It represents a mark in the Portuguese history and a tragedy to this Royal Family.

Well maybe the state doesn´t remember it officially but I saw a lot of books on the monarchy in the bookshops. I believe one special book about King Carlos, esp. to mark this occassion.

Yes, that book is great. The cover of it presents a photo of a very happy Dom Carlos. A cousin of mine bought it and it has a lot of things about Dom Carlos life and personality. I will ask her the book for some time and then I'll post here some of its most interesting informations.

The date is certainly being marked in different ways... Just a few months ago, there was a series of conferences about D. Carlos and his reign, promoted by the University of Porto.

The on-line petition to declare February 1st a national mourning day for King D. Carlos and Prince D. Luís Filipe has already reached 4000 signatures (necessary to make the parliament vote the proposal in plenary assembly).
António de Sousa Cardoso (president of the Royal Cause) says that "this day has just a symbolic intention and it's the chance the Portuguese State has to honour the memory of a King, who was the head of a Democratic State". The president of the RAM clarifies: "we only intend that the national flag may be symbolically placed in signal of respect; we do not want a holiday; only a sign of respec for the death of a constitutional sovereign". And he adds: "We hope this petition to excite a debate around the politic regime", so that a referendum may take place in the future.

On February 1st is also expected a concentration in the Terreiro do Paço, at 5PM, for which all those "who disapprove violence" are invited. At 7 PM, in the Church of S. Vicente de Fora (the Royal Pantheon), the Cardinal of Lisbon, D. José Policarpo, will preside over a solemn Requiem.

The Head of the Portuguese Royal House, Duarte Pio de Bragança, said today that the comemorations around the death of King D. Carlos "is an act of justice and reconciliation of the Portuguese people with its History". During the presentation of the commission in charge of the celebrations, D. Duarte stressed that the aim is not to remember the regicide, but the figure of D. Carlos, "a Portuguese man who gave his life for the Nation".

The commission that was presented today in Lisboa is co-ordinating a series of events, such as exhibitions, conferences and meetings about the politic, diplomatic, artistic and scientific facets of D. Carlos. Among those initiatives there is a series of conferences in the National Center of Culture of Lisboa (in February), a seminar about the Portuguese overseas at Torre de Belém (in May) and a colloque in the Catholic University about the king and the constitutional monarchy (in September).

There will also take place an international oceanographical congress (in October), the printing of comemorative stamps with the portait of King D. Carlos, the international sailing Cup D. Carlos to happen in the Algarve (in August), as well as an iconographic and photographic exhibition about the monarch scheduled at the Catholic University (in September).

Finally, the Ésquilo publishing house will release "Diário íntimo de D. Manuel II" (The intimate journal of D. Manuel II) and Asa will republish the book "O príncipe real - D. Luís Filipe de Bragança" (The Royal Prince - D. Luís Filipe de Bragança).

This book shows several draws of the Regicide of 1908 (1st February) against Dom Carlos and his son, Dom Luís Filipe, and pictures of the Funerals.

Last picture of Kings Carlos and Amelia together. Minutes later, he would be dead.

The murderers had planned to kill Dom Manuel, the other son of Carlos, but Queen Amelia saved her younger son, beating the killer face with a a flowers bouquet.

Yes, Prince Manuel was saved by the flowers of his own mother. If Amelia wasn't there at the time, she would not loose only her husband and first son, but also the youngest one. Amelia was always a brave woman.
But to know more about her, wait for my article hehe!

In this interview, Dom Duarte compare the Portugal of 1900 with the present Portugal, saying that the three Revolutions (1910 - Republica, 1926 - Salazar, 1974 - Democracy) were all unecessary and because of them, we are not so developped as we were in 1900.
D. Duarte says he visited the North of Angola some years ago, and the sobas (a kind of tribal kings) still wear silver medals with the image of D. Luís Filipe.

Apart from this, he does very good considerations about Dom Carlos, as a very cultured person, a man who loved everything related to Oceanography, to Sport and Art (D. Carlos was a great painter).

Also, a statue of King D.Carlos will be unveiled in Cascais at the entrance of the Citadel, the summer residence of the Portuguese Kings, and, nowadays, official summer residence of the Presidents.
(I never heard any of them stayed there since 1975/76).

Last September D.Duarte inaugurated another statue (bas-relief) together with the Mayor of Cascais, António d'Orey Capucho, at the small village of Areias on Cascais surroundings.

The Citadel Palace is undergoing a major restoration and will open as a museum depicting the life of the RF namely of D.Luis (who died in Cascais) and D.Carlos.

The main reason of this video is to remember that on February 1 of 2008, 100 years after the Regicide, a religious Ceremony will be celebrated in memory of King D. Carlos and his son, D. Luis Filipe. It will happen in The Basilica of São Vicente de Fora, in Lisboa, at 6:30 PM.
