Minister forbids the presence of the Army on the ceremonies of the Regicide

Last week, Bloco de Esquerda (an extreme left political party) have questioned the Minister of Defense about the participation of the Musical Band from the Army in the ceremonies of the Regicide.
The socialist Minister already informed the Bloco de Esquerda and the rest of the Country that no unit from the Army is allowed in non-official ceremonies, especially in those organized by Monarchy supporters.

Hundreds of people (more than 500) remembered today King D. Carlos and his son, D. Luis Filipe, in Terreiro do Paço (Lisbon), the place where they were killed 100 years ago.

I was there and I took pictures.

D. Duarte, D. isabel and their son D. Afonso (together with Father Quintella -a catholic Priest- the one at your right) making a minute of silence. The two men behind D. Duarte are his brothers, the Infantes D. Miguel and D. Henrique.

Father Quintella speaching. He mentioned how unfair was the murder of the King and remembered everyone that King D. Carlos was a Patriot who died for the Country. In the end, he invited everyone to pray with him a Salm from the Bible

The President of the Republic, Cavaco Silva, inaugurated today in Cascais a statue of king D. Carlos. According to Cavaco Silva, D. Carlos is one of the statesmen who most "did to promote the symbolic encounter with the national nature" and to project Portugal abroad, through the incentive to the scientific and technical development. Out of his "rare combination of gifts", Cavaco Silva stressed the king's sensibility to represent the maritime life and praised his studies of sea species and resources, as well as the creation of the first Portuguese laboratory of biology.
The event was also attended by the Duke of Bragança, D. Duarte Pio, by the Mayor of Cascais, by the Secretary of State for Tourism, by the Head of the Army and by the President of the Academy of Letters and Arts, among other personalities.

I was wondering why some would prefer Mr. Van Uden as a pretender of the throne? A Portuguese friend of mine described him once as 'some sort of fascist', so hence the wondering.

Nice that the eldest son of the Duke of Baraganca attended the mass too. Did the other two children attend?

D. Francisco Van Uden is not a fascist. He doesn't have any reason to be one. Her mother was condemned to death by Gestapo when she was living in Austria and I have never heard him talking against democracy.
Francisco was a brilliant officer of the Portuguese Army. He received condecorations for his services in our African wars.

D. Francisco is the son of Nicolaas Johannes Maria Van Uden (a Dutch) and Dª Maria Adelaide de Bragança, Infanta of Portugal. Dª Adelaide is D. Duarte's aunt, since she was sister of D. Duarte's father, D. Duarte Nuno.

Dª Adelaide and D. Duarte Nuno were the younger children of D. Miguel de Bragança (for some, King D. Miguel II). D. Miguel has always lived on exile. The Miguelistas were banned from Portugal around 1830.

Some people say that D. Duarte Nuno could never be the Pretender to the Throne because he was not the closest Relative of D. Manuel II, the last King of Portugal. He was only his distant cousin. The closest relative was a half-sister of D. Manuel, an illegitimate daughter of D. Carlos. As illegitimate children are ineligible, D. Duarte Nuno was chosen as the royal pretender. The problem is that he was an Austrian, not a Portuguese. His sisters (including Dª Maria Adelaide) were not Portuguese either.

D. Duarte Pio was born in Switzerland as an Austrian just like his father.
Dª Adelaide is a mother of 4 children: Francisco Van Uden is the third one but he and his younger and only sister were the only children of her who were born in Portugal. The Royal Constitutional Letter of 1842, article 8, says that a future king cannot be naturalized in foreign soil, as it happened with D. Duarte Nuno and his son.
Therefore, D. Francisco Van Uden is for some (including me ) the right Pretender to the Throne of Portugal. It doesn't mean we dislike D. Duarte. I would respect and acccept him as my King, but imo the right one should be D. Francisco.

D. Duarte Nuno claimed that he and his son, D. Duarte Pio, were born as Portuguese but there is the strong suspicion that in 1961 he tried to falsify the birth certificates of him and his son.

Back to the Regicide, one of the most interesting books that are now republished is D. Manuel's journal, where he tells his own version of that traumatizing event. It's being republished by Ésquilo and here are a few excerpts:

Just like you said, Elsa, I am not sure if this the right thread to talk about this. I just wanted to say that it is impossible that D. Duarte Pio had been born (1945) in the Portuguese Embassy of Bern, when the Law of Banishment was only revogated in 1950. In 1945, Duarte Nuno was not a Portuguese, so his son could never be allowed to be born in Portuguese Territory. Even if that happened, it was an illegal decision, contrary to the monarchist Law of Nationality of 1826.

Not sure if it's just being aired on the Portuguese History Channel or if it's worldwide... perhaps you can check with the Dutch version of the network.

The National Library is organizing a special exhibition about the Regicide, with newspapers and books of the time. It may be visited from February 18th to May 24th.

Regicídio: Landau onde morreu D. Carlos integra exposição sobre o Rei no Museu dos Coches - RTP Notícias


The open carriage where King D. Carlos was traveling when the regicide took place is one of the pieces of an exhibition held at the National Coach Museum, since Wednesday.

Besides this open carriage, the exhibition includes a series of saddles that once belonged to the King, as well as documents, photographs, engravings and paintings made by D. Carlos.

At the end of the exhibition, a 12-minute film shows the visitants a series of unedited images of the monarch, who was murdered 100 years ago.
