Mellerio Shell Taiara

This tiara was commissioned by HM Queen Isabella II of Spain for the wedding of one of her two daughters. Which daughter is unknown. The shell tiara, looks like it is made after the beautiful waves of the ocean. The tiara along with another tiara commisioned by Mellerio for the family, was put on display in Paris in 1906.

1. Here is an official portriat of HM Queen Sofia wearing it, this photo used to be on the official spanish royal family site.
2. Here is a close-up of the tiara
3. Seems as though this is one of HM favorite tiaras to wear, she wears it quite often.
4. Presidential visit from Uzbekistan, the queen wears the tiara once again.

i love Sofia's cabochon ruby parure. I wonder why it has never been worn again by her, or at least lent to the infantas. Pity its stored away somewhere.

For a while that is being said that the rubi set of Queen Sofia is reserved to the Princess of Asturias ;) So, the most likely is that Letizia will be the next user of those wonderful jewels :flower:

I really can't stand her not so royal and historical necklaces.
She doesn't seem to have many necklaces like those worn by Queen Elizabeth, Queen Anne-Marie and Queen Margrethe.

Pesidential visit from Uzbekistan, the queen wears the tiara once again.
Both pictures are from the State visit of the German (not Uzbeki) President to Spain in Nov 2002. They show the Royal couple with HE President Johannes Rau and wife Christine.

I doubt this tiara will be given to Letizia, as it seems this tiara is "reserved" for the Queen. King Juan Carlos' mother, the Countess of Barcelona, never wore this tiara.

Yes they are lovely jewelries but I prefer this colourful jewelry on princess Christina, I think it is too colourful for the queen in her age, but the Oriental mariage event (which also often colourful) she had attended might have excused it;)

There it is! I love her necklace and earrings from Van Cleef & Arpels, absolutely beautiful! Not often seen but definitely worth the waiting. It was a wedding gift from Greek tycoon Satvros Niarchos. It is formed by a chain composed by links of large cabochon rubies, surrounded by diamonds and a row of smaller rubies.

It can be used as a short necklace, a two turn necklace or as a large sautoir that reaches the waist. Its design allows to use it as a one or two rows tiara, as Her Majesty did on her official visit to Luxembourg.

1.- Those earrings make a perfect combination with her tiara. This tiara was bought in France in 1862 as a gift from Isabel II to her daugther, Infanta Isabel. It imitates the foamy crest of a wave complimented by pear pearl drops.
2.- Sapphire necklace and earrings. Personal gift from His Majesty King Juan Carlos.
3.- Large diamond necklace and diamond and pearl tiara made by Cartier. Originally belonged to Queen Victoria Eugenia. Her necklace or "rivière" is composed by 30 large, round diamonds set in a Russian style.
4.- Floral tiara. Attending the wedding of Prince Haakon and Mette Marit. A magnificent wedding gift from Franco and the people of Spain.
5.- Fleur-de-lys tiara. The lily flower is the heraldist emblem of the royal house of Borbon.
6.- Pearl necklace.

Here, worn on the King's and Queen's official visit to Paris in 1985. Those jewels are stunning!

I would like to point that her necklaces are historical, not all of them, that's true, but some of them are and have passed from Queen to Queen. It is very important to say that most royal jewels disappeared in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War and that is the main reason why Her Majesty doesn't have many historical necklaces indeed. Also, I would like to say that absolutely all of the jewels that Queen Sofia wears are of her own property, as Spain doesn't have State jewels. She could sell all of them if she wanted to, unlike many of Queen Elizabeth's jewels, that actually belong to the State, not to herself.

That's a nice brooch and a beautiful Queen.
She seems to be fond of gold jewelry

(I am not sure to be posting this in the right place  )(Administrators are free, of course, to delete or relocate the post.)

In Hola I found this article published before the Princes of Asturias’ wedding.

The magazine was trying to imagine which tiara would be chosen by Letizia for her own wedding.

Since they point the origins and stories behind these tiaras I thought it would be interesting to post it here.

Regards:)

The tiara with Flower of Lis

This tiara is said to be one of the most cherished by the Spanish Royal Family.

It was a present given by King Alfonso XIII to Queen Victoria Eugenia, who worn it at their wedding, on the 31st of May 1906.

The tiara is made of platinum and diamonds. The tiara has a sort of hinges that makes possible to use it opened or closed.

Queen Sofia has worn this tiara in several solemn acts.

Queen Sofia’s wedding tiara

In a neoclassical style and in a Hellenic Line (due to that Greek column design like Parthenon and the laurel leaves) it was worn by Princess Sofia in her wedding day, on 14th of May 1962.

The tiara was a gift from Kaiser William II of Prussia to his daughter Princess Victoria Luisa, when, in 1913, she married to August III of Hanover. Princess Victoria Luisa offered the tiara to her daughter Princess Federica when she married Prince Pavlos of Greece. And Queen Frederica offered the tiara to her daughter Sofia when she married Prince Juan Carlos.

The tiara is made in platinum and diamonds and has a precious hanging diamond in the central part.

Pearl Tiaras

Tiara of Queen Maria Cristina of Austria (second wife of King Alfonso XII)

Queen Maria Cristina offered the tiara to her son Alfonso XIII, who offered it to his son Juan Count of Barcelona on the occasion of his wedding with Maria de las Mercedes. (But Maria de las Mercedes didn’t use the tiara at her wedding; instead she took a tiara made by orange blossom that was made especially for her in Valencia). This tiara was worn at their weddings by Infanta Doña Pilar (1967) and her daughter Simoneta (1990).

Countess of Barcelona standing by her portrait where she is seen using the tiara.

The tiara was made by Cartier, with diamonds and pearls. It has the shape of inverted tear with two rows of 14 pears. This tiara is now belonging to Infanta Doña Pilar.

Here we can see Queen Sofia wearing the tiara in Persépolis, in 1971, when she attended the celebrations of 2.500 years of the Persian monarchy.

The Non-nuptial Tiara of Queen Ena
Designed by Cartier, this tiara has 8 big pearls and in ancient times the pearls were replaced by Emeralds. Known as the Pearl Tiara of Queen Ena (Victoria Eugenia) nobody at the Spanish Royal Family has worn it at a wedding and that is why is not considered a wedding tiara until his moment. Queen Victoria Eugenia gave it to her daughter Infanta Cristina (Marone) who offered the tiara to his nephew Juan Carlos.
Maritime Motif Tiara
(Queen Sofia wears the same earrings used by Infanta Elena at her wedding)
Made in 1867 by Mellerio Jewelers, in Paris, ordered by Elizabeth II to the wedding of her daughter Maria Isabel. It is known, as well, as the Shell Tiara due to her maritime motif. It has diamonds and pearls mounted over platinum. Infanta Doña Isabel gave this tiara to her nephew Alfonso XIII. It was not seen for long time until in the 70’s it was known that King Juan Carlos had offered it to Queen Sofia.

The Floral Tiara

This tiara worn by Infanta Cristina at her wedding with Iñaki, on the 4th of October 1997. In platinum and diamonds, it carves brilliant and it carves knob and was made by Mellerio Jewelers. It is composed by five flowers, two with the same size on both sides and a bigger central flower.

One singularity of this tiara is that can be used as a brooch or a necklace. This tiara was offered by Spanish Government to Queen Sofia, in 1962, for her wedding.

hmm...how come the spanish royal family only have around 5 tiaras for the queen, letizia, and the 2 infantas to use? they don't seem to have those really grand tiaras and matching necklace and other accessories like the Danish and the British royal family...

The Spanish Royal Family lived many years in the exile, the Queen Victoria Eugenia could take some jewels to her when ihe went away of Spain, had to sell some because she needed money and distributed others between other members of the family. The Queen inherited only 3 tiaras, a necklace of diamonds and some smaller pieces. Later she has the tiara that she used in her wedding and that the Spanish Government gave her when she married.
