It can be used as a short necklace, a two turn necklace or as a large sautoir that reaches the waist. Its design allows to use it as a one or two rows tiara, as Her Majesty did on her official visit to Luxembourg. Last edited by zarzuela; 05-24-2005 at 02:34 PM. |

1.- Those earrings make a perfect combination with her tiara. This tiara was bought in France in 1862 as a gift from Isabel II to her daugther, Infanta Isabel. It imitates the foamy crest of a wave complimented by pear pearl drops.
2.- Sapphire necklace and earrings. Personal gift from His Majesty King Juan Carlos. 3.- Large diamond necklace and diamond and pearl tiara made by Cartier. Originally belonged to Queen Victoria Eugenia. Her necklace or "rivière" is composed by 30 large, round diamonds set in a Russian style. 4.- Floral tiara. Attending the wedding of Prince Haakon and Mette Marit. A magnificent wedding gift from Franco and the people of Spain. 5.- Fleur-de-lys tiara. The lily flower is the heraldist emblem of the royal house of Borbon. 6.- Pearl necklace. Last edited by zarzuela; 06-09-2005 at 06:48 PM. |

In Hola I found this article published before the Princes of Asturias’ wedding. The magazine was trying to imagine which tiara would be chosen by Letizia for her own wedding. Since they point the origins and stories behind these tiaras I thought it would be interesting to post it here. Regards:) --- The tiara with Flower of Lis ![]() This tiara is said to be one of the most cherished by the Spanish Royal Family. It was a present given by King Alfonso XIII to Queen Victoria Eugenia, who worn it at their wedding, on the 31st of May 1906. ![]() The tiara is made of platinum and diamonds. The tiara has a sort of hinges that makes possible to use it opened or closed. Queen Sofia has worn this tiara in several solemn acts. ![]() |

Queen Sofia’s wedding tiara In a neoclassical style and in a Hellenic Line (due to that Greek column design like Parthenon and the laurel leaves) it was worn by Princess Sofia in her wedding day, on 14th of May 1962. The tiara was a gift from Kaiser William II of Prussia to his daughter Princess Victoria Luisa, when, in 1913, she married to August III of Hanover. Princess Victoria Luisa offered the tiara to her daughter Princess Federica when she married Prince Pavlos of Greece. And Queen Frederica offered the tiara to her daughter Sofia when she married Prince Juan Carlos. ![]() ![]() The tiara is made in platinum and diamonds and has a precious hanging diamond in the central part. |

Pearl Tiaras Tiara of Queen Maria Cristina of Austria (second wife of King Alfonso XII) Queen Maria Cristina offered the tiara to her son Alfonso XIII, who offered it to his son Juan Count of Barcelona on the occasion of his wedding with Maria de las Mercedes. (But Maria de las Mercedes didn’t use the tiara at her wedding; instead she took a tiara made by orange blossom that was made especially for her in Valencia). This tiara was worn at their weddings by Infanta Doña Pilar (1967) and her daughter Simoneta (1990). Countess of Barcelona standing by her portrait where she is seen using the tiara. The tiara was made by Cartier, with diamonds and pearls. It has the shape of inverted tear with two rows of 14 pears. This tiara is now belonging to Infanta Doña Pilar. Here we can see Queen Sofia wearing the tiara in Persépolis, in 1971, when she attended the celebrations of 2.500 years of the Persian monarchy. ![]() |

The Non-nuptial Tiara of Queen Ena Designed by Cartier, this tiara has 8 big pearls and in ancient times the pearls were replaced by Emeralds. Known as the Pearl Tiara of Queen Ena (Victoria Eugenia) nobody at the Spanish Royal Family has worn it at a wedding and that is why is not considered a wedding tiara until his moment. Queen Victoria Eugenia gave it to her daughter Infanta Cristina (Marone) who offered the tiara to his nephew Juan Carlos. Maritime Motif Tiara (Queen Sofia wears the same earrings used by Infanta Elena at her wedding) Made in 1867 by Mellerio Jewelers, in Paris, ordered by Elizabeth II to the wedding of her daughter Maria Isabel. It is known, as well, as the Shell Tiara due to her maritime motif. It has diamonds and pearls mounted over platinum. Infanta Doña Isabel gave this tiara to her nephew Alfonso XIII. It was not seen for long time until in the 70’s it was known that King Juan Carlos had offered it to Queen Sofia. Last edited by mtbcm; 08-31-2005 at 01:40 PM. |

The Floral Tiara ![]() This tiara worn by Infanta Cristina at her wedding with Iñaki, on the 4th of October 1997. In platinum and diamonds, it carves brilliant and it carves knob and was made by Mellerio Jewelers. It is composed by five flowers, two with the same size on both sides and a bigger central flower. ![]() One singularity of this tiara is that can be used as a brooch or a necklace. This tiara was offered by Spanish Government to Queen Sofia, in 1962, for her wedding. (Pictures from Hola magazine and posted through and Thanks to ImageShack for Free Image Hosting) |
