In 1907 there has been a scandal at the Belgian Royal Court, and that's why the family has so little historic jewels at the moment. Louise, daughter of King Leopold II, who left her husband, prince Ferdinand of Saksen-Coburg-Gotha, had so many debts, that her claimants wanted to take posession of her share in het mothers inheritance. It was about the jewels Queen Marie-Henriëtte left her in 1902. Neither her husband as her father wanted to pay for her debts, and that's why the jewels where put up for auction in Brussels.
It was a case the press wrote about for months. The Belgian people were against their King, an unfaithfull husband, who neglected his wife, Queen Marie-Henriette, for years! But a bigger scandal for the belgian people was his attitude against his daughters. He disinherited 2 of them. Stéphanie, widow of Rudolph, son of the emperor of Austria, married for the second time without his permission. Louise should have stayed with her husband. Clementine stayed at her fathers side until he died.
Untill the last moment a lot of people hoped the King would deside not te sell his wife's jewels. They were estimated 9200 English pounds, according to a british magazine from those days. Leopold only withdrew a lace veil the Queen recieved at her wedding from the women of Brussels. The jewels were sold.
Sold were a big diadem in the shape of ostrich feathers (see picture on top), covered with pink diamonds, a gift from the people of Brussels to Queen Marie-Henriette on occasion of her silver wedding anniversary; two bracelets with miniatures of her father en mother; an opal brooch with diamonds; a set of Hungarian earrings; a bracelet with emeralds and diamonds; a brooch with the portrait of the King on ivory, covered with diamonds; a diamond bracelet and two sets of earrings with turqoises and diamonds. Also a number of precious fans were put up for auction. These were made of ivory and covered with pearld, gems or mother-of pearl
