Is it typical for them to be worn so high? When I wear a brooch I wear it further down, like on my collar.

noldorlord I think that is exciting! I will have to do a little google search and see if I can find anything before you get the chance to post! Thank you for the information!

I think HM tends to wear them higher as many of them (and that one in particular) are very large focal points and altogether larger than your average collar.

Thank you for pointing that out

I wonder if her suits are made with a special reinforced panel at that point so that she can wear those heavy things . Most outfits wouldn't stand up to the strain.

Oh, the challenges of being a royal with gorgeous jewels

Certainly her dresses are reinforced to enable her to wear brooches. They have a stronger lining to take the weight. If you look carefully you will notice that her dresses never "sag" under the weight, however large the brooch. (Oh to have couture dresses for every occasion!)

I agree with GillW- QEII's dresses most certainly have to have some reinforcement to support her fabulous brooches. Even when I wear brooches (and believe me, I don't have any Cullinans!), some of my blouses can get a weighed-down sag to them that is not attractive.
QEII also tends to wear a lot of brooches (at least in the wintertime) on her outerwear and coats, which are, by nature, heavier and thus better able to support them. (I'm thinking of some of her wool coats, in particular). However, I'm sure even then those can't hold up the Cullinans! (yes, I like those...).

Then again, if I got to wear the Cullinans, or any of her fabulous brooches, I'm not sure I'd be worrying about the sag.....I'd probably be more worried about walking into walls while I was staring down at the diamonds!!!

Just a tip, but when I wear brooches I tend to wear them as part of either a twinset or on a suit--that way, I can run the pin part through two layers and make it hold up better. Of course, my brooches are not nearly as weighty as the Queens--rather than huge diamonds I have some pave set stones--but I do love brooches and it is all thanks to Her Majesty's influence.

Possible, but unlikely. Pins on many of the brooches are horizontal and bra straps in general would not be wide enough to pin to. Personally I think that would be very uncomfortable too, and would not be conducive to a consistently smart appearance (bra's can have a mind of their own - ladies will appreciate what I mean, with wandering straps etc! Plus moving "within" the outer clothing, being more of a 2nd skin than a separate layer of the outer clothing) IMHO I feel that only a built in reinforcement of the dresses would be the only way that works.

Default 2 brooches from Sri Lanka

During the Royal Visit to Sri Lanka, The Queen received 2 brooches as gifts in Kandy. This was 21st-25th Oct, 1981.
One was described as a sword-fruit flower, the other a navaratne.

Has anyone any knowledge of either of these unseen brooches?

At the new Headquarters of the London Fire Brigade, HM was wearing her Six-Petalled Flower Brooch. This is the same one she wore for the photos when her engagement to Philip was announced. It is not seen very often - maybe only once a year or less...

I don't know this brooch. Does anyone have any information about it? She wore it to the Maundy service.

Thanks

Do you happen to have a link to a picture? I can't find a good picture of what the brooch looks like, Thanks!

The brooch worn by the Queen to the Maundy Service in Armagh was one which used to belong to the late Queen Mother. This is the first time I have seen HM wearing it.

There is a lovely illustration of it here on the RJW board
Royal Jewels of the World Message Board: Re: Flower? closeup

The Queen Mother did not wear it often so pictures are hard to track down.

I understand that the magnificent Queen Mary wore clothing that had been re-enforced to enable her to wear the enormous weight of the jewels she habitually wore. You look at that stomacher of hers and can see if there were not some kind of something the possiblities for an enormous and historic social faux pas are enormous.

Of course the sailors in the Royal Navy used to call the Most Royal Bosom of Queen Mary Cartier's counter because of all the jewels with which it was customarily bedecked. Cheers

I hadn't heard about that comment - I like it!!
Of course, you have to remember that not only were her bodices well reinforced by whalebone "stays" but also that even her large "stomachers" were in fact made up of a number of individual pieces. This means that the overall weight was divided up down the front of the material, rather than being one huge item on only one pin.

It says a lot for couture clothing that the structure is so well designed that you never see a hint of "pull" or "drag" from these very large pieces - even today...

I wonder what treat is in store for us today at the Easter Sunday church service (Windsor)?
