Along with the stunning Princess Thyra's Sapphire Tiara, how many others does H.H.Princess Elisabeth own?
The descendants of Prince Knud and Princess Caroline Mathilde have the following tiaras:

Princess Elisabeth has two tiaras:
- the sapphire tiara which she received from Princess Thyra

- the diamond bandeau (see my post above) which Queen Alexandrine received as a silver wedding present and gave to Elisabeth for her confirmation

Count Ingolf and Countess Sussie also have two tiaras:

- a small diamond tiara which originates from Princess Caroline Mathilde’s mother, Princess Helena
- Queen Alexandrine’s fringe tiara which comes from Alexandrine’s family

Count Christian and Countess Anne-Dorthe had three tiaras:
- the Russian sapphire tiara which Queen Alexandrine received from her side of the family
- the spiky diamond tiara which was made from ears-of-wheat of the maternal grandmother Princess Helena
- a small ruby bracelet tiara which was only ever seen on their youngest daughter, Countess Feodora. The bracelet once belonged to Queen Alexandrine

All in all I note that only 4 out of these seven tiaras came from Queen Alexandrine. And the fringe tiara is the only one which the Queen has ever worn in public. It came from her Romanov relatives, via her Mecklenburg-Schwerin family. That is a stunning history of course, but still the tiara only came to the Danish RF through Alexandrine. It was King Frederik and Queen Ingrid who received the tiaras which Alexandrine had from her predecessor Queen Sophia: the ruby parure (wedding gift) and the Orange Nassau pearl tiara.

I will try to post more pics and info over the next few days.

Edit: I corrected a mistake. Princess Thyra gave the sapphire tiara to Pr. Caroline Mathilde, it was not given to Pr. Helena.

Thanks Tilla , you did great work. I like the minor royal jewels because they are never seen when they are glittering evants.

The Russian Sapphire Tiara of Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna

According to my information this was a convertible necklace/tiara made in 1879 as a wedding present for Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna for her marriage with Grand Duke Franz Friedrich III of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k628/TiliaCordata/Denmark/russian sapphire_zpsvwvhe4hq.jpg

It was their eldest daughter Alexandrine who brought it to Denmark. The next owner was her daughter-in-law Princess Caroline Mathilde who wore the original version of the tiara in her younger years, see here:
http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k628/TiliaCordata/Denmark/russian sapphire cm 1_zpshyojspwb.jpg

At some point the tiara was enlarged and some elements were added. At this point the tiara lost its versatility. It can no longer be worn as necklace. Princess Caroline Mathilde wears it in this pic.:

The next wearer was Countess Anne-Dorthe who wore it at the most important galas like the wedding of Fred & Mary in 2004:

Interesting that it was a Wedding gift to Grand Duchess Anastais of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Do we know if the sapphire-necklace which is now owned by Queen Margrethe also originates from her? It is said that they are russian and we know that they have belonged to Queen Alexandrine. I always think the necklace and the tiara would match very well together.

I agree, they would look very nice together. And wouldn't it be nice if the DRF had parures in all three major stones: emeralds, rubies, sapphires? On can dream. I think that the Queen's sapphire necklace was also a gift from the Russian relatives, but I don't know if they were given to Anastasia or to Alexandrine.

Thank you, Maria Olivia:flowers:.
Princess Helena had a greek key tiara: http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k628/TiliaCordata/Denmark/dk helena greek key_zpse54odbmi.jpg

But it is graduated, in the middle it is higher than at the sides, so it looks good as a tiara. The bracelet of Countess Sussie is straight and has the same width all over. I don't think that this would look really good as a tiara. But with the right hairstyle it might work.

The Fringe Tiara

When Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia married the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1879 she received a fringe tiara from her uncle, Tsar Alexander II.

That is why Princess Elisabeth once borrowed the fringe in 1997 to wear at Queen Margrethe’s silver jubilee:

So that was the story as it is usually told. But there is something that bugs me: GD Anastasia’s fringe looks so different from the fringes worn by the Danish ladies!

The Danish fringe has a very particular look. The small spikes are excessively short and contain only two diamonds each. There are very large gaps between the large spikes. And uncharacteristically for fringe tiaras the diamonds get larger towards the top while the stones at the bottom are fairly small. Last not least it has a characteristic outline, it’s triangular look is almost geometric, with the central spike being the tallest and the other distinctly graduating down in size.

The Mecklenburg fringe on the other hand looks very dense, more like the kokoshnik tiaras of Tzarina Maria Feodorovna (Dagmar) and her sister Queen Alexandra. As if there are only large spikes and very closely together. The outline of the tiara looks rounder, you can’t make out a tip in the middle.

So either the tiara was extensively altered (It is known that Queen Alexandrine was not fond of overbearing jewels so that she might have reduced it to a more modest look?) Or it is a different jewel. Interestingly enough, Alexandrine’s sister-in-law GD Alexandra of Mecklenburg-Schwerin also wore a fringe tiara, and the outline of hers does look similar to that of GD Anastasia.

Thanks for the Storry. had never seen the pic of Grand Duchess Anastasia with the fringe tiara. My guess is that was another fringe tiara in the Mecklenburg-Schwerin collection and this is the one worn by Anastasia and Alexandra. perhaps this was the reason the other fringe was given to Queen Alexandrine.

I seem to remember that Danish author and royal jewellery specialist Bjarne Steen Jensen was adamant that the Danish fringe and the fringe of GD Anastasia are the same. But I didn’t safe his quote, so I might be mistaken. Yet it could be that Bjarne Steen Jensen had incorrect information. He also said that Queen Alexandrine put a not into the tiara box which says that the tiara was made by Bolin.

But she could still have 2 fringe tiaras. One she got as Wedding gift and was given to Alexandrine later. And one who was already in the Mecklenburg-Schwerin Family and which she wears on your picture and was later given to her daughter-in-law Alexandra.

Princess Helena’s Small Diamond Tiara

picture heavily cropped and not subject to copyright

There is not much known about this small tiara. It was made for Princess Helena, you can see her wearing it in this cutting from the group pic of the wedding of CP Frederik of Denmark and Princess Ingeborg of Sweden in 1935.

It is not known if Princess Helena’s daughter Princess Caroline-Mathilde ever wore it, but she gave it her daughter-in-law Countess Inge at her wedding to Count Ingolf. This small one was the only tiara Countess Inge was ever seen with, as she died before her husband inherited the fringe tiara.

http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k628/TiliaCordata/Denmark/dk helenas tiara inge2_zpsjyxeanmf.jpg

Count Ingolf’s second wife, Countess Sussie, usually wore the larger and more impressive fringe tiara. The last time that she was seen with the small tiara was the Dinner at Fredensborg for Queen Margrethe’s 70th birthday. I think she only chose it because there were two tiara events in a row and she had already worn her ‘best’ tiara at the previous theatre gala.

Thanks for the history of it. Seems Princess Caroline-Matrhilde inherited quiet a few of her mother's tiaras. Have we ever seen a pic of Countess Susie at the Theatre Gala before Frederik and Mary's Wedding. Wonder which tuiara she worn then. Or where the Rosenborgs not invited to it.

Oops, sorry! I made a mistake about the sapphire tiara of Princess Elisabeth: Pr. Tyra gave this to Caroline-Mathilde, it did not belong to Pr. Helena!
I think that only this small tiara comes from Princess Helena. The Russian sapphire tiara and the fringe are from Q Alexandrine, the other sapphire tiara from Pr. Tyra.

Good point about the pre-wedding gala. I haven’t seen pictures of any of Rosenborg Countesses at this gala, but it would be very interesting to know what they wore.

The Spikey Tiara of Countess Anne-Dorthe

http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k628/TiliaCordata/Denmark/dk spikey_zpsotizgwni.jpg

This tiara is said to have been a wedding present to Countess Anne-Dorthe from her parents-in-law, Prince Knud and Princess Caroline-Mathilde. I have also heard that the Countess has worn it on her wedding day, but I have never seen a wedding picture of her. Has anyone seen one that they can post?

The tiara was made from an historic ears-of-wheat brooch. The origin of this brooch seems not clear to me. Some say that it was a brooch which once had been owned by Queen Lovisa and which Prince Knud had received from his parents. Others say that it was part of an ears-of-wheat tiara of Princess Helena, which had been dismantled to create jewels for her various children. More on this ears-of-wheat tiara will follow later.

Countess Anne-Dorthe was not often seen wearing this tiara, she preferred to wear her Russian sapphire tiara. Here are two pics of her wearing it at unknown events.

In recent years the tiara has often been worn by her daughter Countess Camilla. It is the only tiara that Camilla ever wore.

Strangely Countess Camilla did not wear a tiara on her wedding day. It was her youngest sister Feodora who sported this tiara on her big day in 2004.
http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k628/TiliaCordata/Denmark/dk spikey feodora wed_zps1bpu65sm.jpg

This was the only time that Feodora has worn this diamond tiara. On other events she always wears a small ruby bracelet tiara.

I'm not too keen on the Diamond Spike Tiara belonging to Countess Anne-Dorthe.

It is understandable that she prefered the saphire tiara, isn't it :whistling:?

Yes indeed, thankfully the Countess has a more impressive one to bedazzle us all with :D

I wonder when did the sapphire tiara came into the posession of Count Christian and was therefore avalible to Countess Anne-Dorthe. Only after the death of his mother in 1995 when the fringe tiara was inherited by his brother Count Ingolf or already earlier. At the Wedding of Prince Joachim and Alexandra manley which was a few weeks before the death of Princess Caroline Mathilde Countess Anne-Dorthe wore already the sapphire tiara but has she also worn it earlier?

That is an interesting question. I don't know when Countess Anne-Dorthe started to wear the sapphire tiara. But was the wedding in 1995 the first time that the twins Josephine and Camilla wore tiaras? Maybe Anne-Dorthe borrowed the sapphire tiara from her mother-in-law so that her daughter could wear the spikey tiara?

The Ruby Bracelet Tiara

I have seen this very, very small tiara only worn by Countess Feodora of Rosenborg. The bracelet originates from from Queen Alexandrine and was set on a frame by Prince Knud to be given as engagement present to Countess Anne-Dorte.

Unfortunately Countess Feodora is not often caught by the cameras at gala events. She attended the CP wedding in 2004, but there were only pictures of her at the hairdressers:

At the Gala Concert for Queen Margrethe’s 40th jubilee:
http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k628/TiliaCordata/Denmark/dk rubybr f 2012_zpsotmzqryb.jpg

Personally I find it interesting that the 3 sisters Josephine, Camilla and Feodora never swap tiaras. Each has one to go with and they never borrow another one. That makes me thing that the spikey tiara might be inherited by its wearer Countess Camilla. Since Feodora has the ruby bracelet tiara it seems fair that the Russian sapphire tiara went to Josephine. (With some good luck we may know more when the Queen’s birthday celebrations come in two weeks time!)

The Heering Tiara

I hope to see this tiara at next week's birthday festivities:flowers::

Susanne Heering is a friend of the Queen who designs the costumes for Susanne Heering's children ballets. I don't know the origin of this lovely laurel wreath tiara. But it is also worn by her daughter-in-law Caroline Heering, former liw of CP Mary and secretary of her foundation.
