I always assumed that this tiara must have been Princess Yuriko's, since it has been worn by both her daughters and one of her daughters-in-law. But it's the first time that I actually see a picture of Princess Yuriko wearing it.

Setsuko, Princess Chichibu, had a quite similar pearl drop tiara, and strangely, Princess Yuriko of Mikasa has also worn this other pearl drop tiara shortly after Princess Chichibu's death. I always wondered why she would do that if she had a similar tiara herself? But I don't know when Princess Hisako started wearing the pearl drop tiara. Is it possible, that Hisako had already been given the Mikasa pearl drop tiara at that time (I think it was in 1997)?

And do you know who the younger lady in that picture is?

This is the best picture I've ever seen of Princess Mikasa's Kokoshnik Tiara and I still can't make out what the design looks like. I wish we had better pictures but that's not going to happen now.

I believe it's Princess Mikasa's older daughter, Yasuko, but I'm not positive.

Yes, that's Yasuko.

It's a mystery and Princess Yuriko only appears to have worn Princess Chichibu's secondary tiara once (at least in photos). I'm not certain Princess Hisako was actually given the Mikasa drop tiara. Loan seems more likely as she mostly switches between her wedding and bandeau tiaras. I only recall 2 appearances of Hisako wearing the Mikasa drop tiara: Prince Carl-Philip's wedding and a blurry 2008 new year reception photo

I am not sure if this is the correct forum to post this comment on , however whilst viewing the "Royal Hat's "blog yesterday, {a wonderful post on the millinery worn during the enthronement ] . I realised that the tiara's worn by the former Takamado princesses Noriko Senge ,and Ayako Mori both appear to be convertible . Noriko Senge's bearing a strong resemblance to her wedding banquet necklace , whilst Ayako Mori was wearing the tiara formerly worn by HIRH Princess Hisako as a necklace . Perhaps Princess Hisako wanted to give her daughters a tangible reminder of their royal lineage that could also be worn in a less "royal" setting . HIRH also realised that they would be present at events such as the Enthronement . After all .upon their marriages they had to return the parure they received on their 20th birthday's . As other former princesses also appeared in tiara's perhaps this is an imperial tradition ?

The Empress looked fantastic, IMO. The large diamonds on the tops of the scrolls on the tiara "rhyme" well with the diamond necklaces.
