Love that purple gown. She looked great.
The first pic is from the New Years Gala, the second pic is from the State Visit form Turkey in March 17.
I have put together some collages hope this is of some help.
I think that is the problem with large aquamarine's, the setting has to enhance the stones and that is not easy.I've always loved Mary's aquamarine choker but the sapphires surrounding it and on the spacers of the pearls have never sat well with me. I don't know who thought if that but I think it would've been much better suited with diamonds or more pearls. The blue from the sapphires are too bright and they clash with the aqua color and pearls. Maybe someday Mary will change it. That's my hope.

If you take a look at Camilla's quite deep aqaumarine clasp you see they have gone large pearls, large intricately woven diamond studded surround:

This is a lighter one from Christies and with modern facets, needed just a diamond surround:https://shard1.1stdibs.us.com/archivesE/jewelry/upload/412/42/412_1360350989_4.jpg
Whereas Mary's pearls are tiny and needs spacers to keep the pearls from flopping all over the place. But, more importantly, the aquamarine stone itself is of an incredibly delicate shade and the sapphires have been added to help the large stone retain it's colour.

Mary doesn't seem to have worn this for some years and I think that could be because they are too dainty for her personal style. Now if the used bigger pearls and softer, lighter sapphires, it might hold it's colour and be more Mary's speed.
IMO the sapphires don't enhance the color of the aquamarine at all. Because as you say, the aquamarine is so delicate I would think using pearls or diamond (as Camilla did) to surround the stone would be better. To me the sapphires over shadow the beautiful color of the aquamarine stone. I guess it's all a matter of personal taste but I do not care for the sapphires on the choker.
