Belgian Royal Jewels of the Past

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Im not convinced that the pearl tiara of Claire's isnt fake.

What a beautiful tiara. And yet what nice that at least not lost in private hands.
What a wonderful collection that would have the Belgian Royal Family.

I still don't understand why the Belgian RF didn't buy that tiara back. It wasn't so expensive. Instead king Albert II got a yacht -never a sound investment.Anyway, on the bright side: we can see the tiara if we visit Schloss Mannheim. IIRC the tiara also came with earrings (and a necklace?).

I couldn't agree more it would have been a regal addition to the Belgian jewels and a shame it wasn't bought back at the time of its sale.

I don't know about a necklace, but it appears that a pair of matching earrings was made for Princess Marie José around 1925, at the time when two elements were added to the tiara to make it loner. So that was nearly 100 years after the tiara's creation. I don't know if the earrings have been autioned at the time of the tiara auction. So they could still be with Princess Maria Gabriella?

It seems that the BRF has no interest in building up a historic jewel collection. Over the centuries so many important jewels have been sold or stolen, they seem quite accustomed to seeing the heirlooms go.

What do you mean when you say the jewels have been "stolen" ?

I wonder how one steals jewels from a reigning royal family other than their country being invaded and the family being held prisoner,or something of that sort.

Some of the jewels of the Countess of Flanders, mother of Albert I, were stolen from their palace. Admittedly I don't know which jewels precisely were stolen, but it is said that a diamond tiara was among the lost jewels. Please, can someone here tell more about this theft?

This diamond and pearl tiara was not among those jewels which were lost through the sale, but was inherited by her eldest daughter, the Duchess of Vendome. Unfortunately, the tiara was sold either by her or by her heirs. It is now in a Tokyo museum.

Princess Maria Gabriella is a royal jewel seller ! Why ??

She sold also the Fabergé? tiara from Prince Charles Count of Flanders who gave it to his Sister Queen Maria Josée (instead to his brother King Leopold III !)
At that time the Queen was to old to wear jewels and to attend gittering events.

What diamond and emerald tiara is it that Astrid got as a wedding present from her parents-in-law? I've never seen it mentioned before.

She got the emerald necklace/tiara as a gift from her parents-in-law aftger the birth of Baudouin in 1930. So i guess that this one is meant.

The late Princess of Réthy wearing Queen Elisabeth's Cartier Bandeau Tiara and a very large emerald brooch, presumably also sold off!

Queen Elisabeth's tiara, after being sold by the Princess of Réthy, somehow made its way back to the Cartier firm, didn't it ? There have been rumors that Cartier would be willing to loan it to the Queen of the Belgians, but I suspect the Belgian Royal House might find that demeaning to the Queen's dignity. Could King Philippe buy it back ? I don't know if Cartier would be willing to sell it, or if the King could justify such an expensive acquisition in such austere times.

I agree with you but also did I read the article correctly and this tiara is still in the Belgian jewel vaults but has yet to be dusted off?

Nothing is known about the Stockholm Wedding gift tiara. queen Astrid wore it only 1 or 2 times. The pearl was seen worn by Princess Lilian in the 1940's but sinnce then nothing from it has been seen. Some say that was perhaps in the vaults of Queen Fabiola but if that was the case is not clear.

If you look carefully the Group Picture of the belgian Royal Wedding , Princess Astrid wears a pendant with emeralds she just received from her parents.

Here is a cutting from the wedding group pic. It's not very clear, but you can see that dark emerald. I used to think that it was a brooch, but you are right maria olivia, it is a pendent and a thin necklace can be seen if you look closely.

I don't know if that question has already been answered on this forum, but could anyone possibly shed some light on the current wherabouts of the following pieces of jewelry that belonged to Queen Astrid ?

1) Stockholm tiara (gift from the citizens of Stockholm, last seen on princess Lilian)
2) Diamond and emerald tiara (from Albert I and Elisabeth, not seen on Astrid or since)
3) Emerald necklace/tiara (from Albert I and Elisabeth on the birth of Boudewijn, current owner unknown)
4) Diamond rivière (from Gustav V of Sweden, current owner unknown)
5) Diamond and emerald bracelet/choker (from Albert I and Elisabeth, now with the Grand Duke of Luxembourg ?)
6) Emerald earrings (from her parents, now with Grand Duke of Luxembourg ?)
7) Diamond and emerald cross (from her mother, current owner?)

2 and 3 are the same piece. Nr. 4 was worn by Grand Duchess Maria Teresa a few times for example at the State Visit to Belgium a few years ago. According to Luxarazzi Nr 7 was broken up by Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte to create her peacock emerald necklace/tiara.

The whereabouts of the two tiaras (1 and 2/3) is unknown, although some people claim that they are still in the RF, laying around unused. I don't find this theory convincing, but that is me. Basically we don't know what happened to them.

No 6 has been worn by GD Maria Theresa several times. The last time I remember was the Nobel Awards ceremony in 2011. So that piece would still be in Luxembourg.

Was the Diamond and emerald cross a tiara or necklace?

A pendant necklace , GD Josephine Charlotte made her peacock emerald tiara with them, as written by Stefan.

This very tiara , Present from King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth to Princess Astrid for Prince Baudouin Christening in 1930, is never seen since before 1960. The last wearer was Princess Lilian.

Could Princess Lilian have sold it ? I assume we would know about it if she had, wouldn't we ?

Yes of course. When she sod the Cartier tiara is was written as Owner , a Member of the Nobility. A jewel Specialist sa

Princess Lilian wearing Queen Elisabeth's Diamond Scroll Tiara,I assume they were sold off too like so much of the Belgian jewel chest.

The Princess is also wearing a diamond necklace and brooch, what a pity she did not let the king buy them back.

if i recall the son of one of the founders of cartier the firm that made the tiara and later bought it back was princess lilian's brother in law i think that's way she didn't offer it for the king first , as for the necklace if i remember i think it was made of the diamonds from the nine provinces tiara and the brooch originally belonged to empress carlota of mexico nee princess of belgium and was worn by both queen elizabeth and astrid .
